Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

ED needs one of these.

From what Kate herself refers to as the "tldr conclusion" from the first few mins:

".. as a former Elite Dangerous commander who has moved over to Star Citizen completely ..."

" ... do you think Star Citizen is a better game than Elite. And the answer is yes, for me."

" ... and for me that game is Star Citizen."

Which is absolutely fair. "A Star Citizen reviews STAR CITIZEN", basically.

Ok, i've never been a fan of Kate even when she played Elite and really went off her when she started with the whole "ED commander plays SC" thing.

But, here's my review of her review.

She starts out very well with the play what you enjoy and other disclaimers.

She went on to talk about how SC is received on the ED forums, and she's not wrong. The skepticism is high. Although i'd say with good reason (of course, i'm biased and a Russian shill bot). :D

Odyssey was a disappointment for her. Fair enough, her and many others.

She says she can't afford to splurge on ships and stuff and expected it to be hard to get stuff. It wasn't that bad. I've talked about the oh a girl, shower her with gifts mentality before, but that was conjecture on my part and i've got no proof that Kate was gifted anything... although i'd be surprised if she wasn't, either by players or CIG. It was a golden opportunity for CIG to give her something to ease her progress, and we know CIG have done it before. But again, i've no proof, it is conjecture on my part.

SC bigger ships needs a crew. Therefore pay to win is not as big an issue as people make out. I'll accept that to a point. But then you have to ask the question, why do you need bigger ships? Because you can get crew!

Shields are not as strong as in ED. Yes, ED went over the top with engineering, its an issue i've raised before, HP inflation is annoying. However, SC is still early days (LOL) and we need to say how things evolve prior to release. I'm sure backers will sooner or later start with requests for "crafting" which will lead to the same issue.

She diverts to say once again how SC is better for her.

Lots of real estate to explore even though its just a single system. Fair point about the diversity of biomes, something still lacking in ED, and something we may never see or have to wait years for in ED.

More systems will come because the underlying tech is there - ok, first time i did giggle during the video.

Missed a bit, not rewinding - voice comms. Not sure what the point is here. Voice comms exist in ED and many games, although the trend these days is to move to third parties.

No engineering grind - yeah, that's an issue with ED, and maybe one day will be an issue with SC. Although, to be fair, that is one thing i've never seen CIG talk about (crafting).

She moves onto the criticism....

Criticism is warranted due to development time and funding model.

Bugs do happen, and not uncommonly, although usually not something that affects you badly.

Random deaths, missing items, infinite loading screens, annoying workarounds, missing ships.

Sometimes have to reset your character.

She has an ok tollerance for bugs but a low tollerance for grind.

If you have a low tollerance for bugs is bad.

PvE side is quite limited, especially on foot.

Low pop servers are ok, but its bad and overall PvE combat with NPCs is bad.

Refers to future tech which might solve this (hahaaha)

If you have a large group there is a lack of content for them. Even the toughest missions are easy if you have a big group - to be honest, many games can't handle this sort of thing. Generally they can only scale so far, especially SC where things start to go bad when there is too much going on.

Caveat: This is not a complete product.

If you do play, join an Org, you'll enjoy it more - every MMO ever, although not everyone wants that. Even though i'm technically the leader of an "org" in ED (because the rest of them are shiftless and don't want the job) i still play solo mainly. Not everyone wants that, and in SC, it is quite apparent that most of the fun comes from interactions with other players. ED works as a single player game to some extent. I'm not sure the same can be said of SC.

Overall, i agree with thistle - its now a case of a SC player reviews SC, not an ED player. She says she has totally gone over to playing SC (fair play to her).

One thing is clear, she has no interest in the years of lies and deception by CIG. For her its not a concern. I'm curious how she will feel in a few years. Because if CIG is still pulling the strings, i don't expect that to change. However, the latest con does give some hope in this area, that CR has been sidelined and someone else is pulling the strings.

If it could be shown that CR is effectively out, i'd be willing to buy into SC at some point, if they can make it a releasable product (with the obvious caveat that it looks like a game i might enjoy - which it does in parts, but some aspects turn me off based off the current state and plans)
