Who else finds the botched VR on foot implementation, literally nauseating?

I do, and I don't think I'm alone in that; however, I think the figure will be skewed downwards as I know a lot of VR players, such as the bestestest ever AX pilot - Katy Byrne who is now a Star Citizen content creator, have left Elite since Odyssey's launch.

Speaking as a VR newbie, I find it utterly bizarre that a game would partially implement VR.
Once a dev' commits to supporting VR in a game, it needs to be consistent throughout the entire game.

I'm almost afraid to say this but it would have been better if FDev had removed VR support entirely, until they could implement it consistently throughout ALL of the game.

FDEV has a strange attitude. Developers around the world tend to implement VR in later updates. FDEV is the only one so far that removed it for an expansion.
And we all know what it means when they say "not at launch". PSVR players know it very well.
So the 2D screen was the only way to keep VR at least in the ships.
It was clear for most of us that they would have not support it later on so it was the typical "now or never" situation.

I've not tried VR since Ody launched due to crappy performance.

I might get round to it one day.

Edit: Gave it a quick try and nope not nauseating at all.

Haven't played the game seriously in a while. Tried Odyssey in VR for the first time yesterday and... well, seriously!? How hard is it to implement VR in a game that already has VR, not to mention that I can find hacked implementations of ancient games that didn't have it -- like Jedi Outcast and Academy -- that seem to be just fine. This is with and with out VorpX which can also hack modern games as well.

I mean, really, what is there to it? You render two views of your environment at slightly different (eye length) distances. So, why couldn't Odyssey do this? What fundamental issue made it impossible or impractical to implement it in a game that already has it?

I'm afraid I'm just not getting it.

Well, to be fair, they haven't said it won't happen and until they do, I'd hold off on the doom.
It would seem sensible to hold off on it until the performance and other issues are sorted. Then we might know a bit more on which way they will go.
Also, Odyssey is like a different game with different mechanics so it was always going to be problematic regards VR. like you alluded to with other games.

but I guess it is time to bang the drum again, Frontier should have stuck to their initial announcement that EDO would not have VR, would have saved the recurring "I don't like...
Well you see, there is the sand in my shorts. It wasn't exactly an initial announcement. It was well after taking pre-orders, and just a few months before launch they stated that there would be no VR support. So I had already paid for the expansion, thinking I would get the same VR support I had enjoyed for four or five years prior.
So for me, and I only speak for myself, I feel that main the premier VR game in the market had completely misled me.

You have, as do I, exactly the same VR support as previously...

ETA: Complete with exactly the same bugs.. (and, knowing that the VR support would remain exactly as Horizons, there was plenty of time to refund a pre-order too)

Did you cancel your pre-order?

I have zero interest in playing with this "2D screen inside VR" mode. That said, I have no problem switching between VR and an actual 2D monitor. I already do this with exploration, since the FSS is just a big floating 2D display drawn in front of me, so I'd rather use the FSS from the comfort of a high-res proper 2D display rather than a low-res box strapped to my head, switching to VR if I find something of particular interest that I wish to experience immersively. And since switching between 2D and VR is basically just a relog, something people do (not me) 100 times an hour to farm mats, so I don't see it as that big a deal.

I'm much more worried about what the performance of Odyssey will do to my personal VR experience, because low framerate does make me literally sick.

I thought this was the official line regarding VR? Whether you agree with it or not is another matter.
In Odyssey, you will be able to fly down to planets, fly through atmospheres, and drive along planet surfaces in your SRV; all while remaining in VR.

When disembarking your ship or SRV, you will be presented with a projected flat game screen in your VR headset in order to continue on foot. You will of course be able to remove your headset if you so choose, but this will not be a requirement.

There will be no requirement to boot between Horizons and Odyssey in order to continue your journey.
