Drew Wagar's Thoughts

Honestly, I hope Drew really goes for good at this point. Everyone gets one melodramatic drunk farewell post but more than that and it becomes a bit pathetic. Best of luck to him and I hope he finds something else he enjoys enough to write some fanfic about.

And to the folks in this topic who have been complaining for years: why not follow his example and find something you enjoy in life. You can thank me later!
The worst defense of a game that is going through development troubles is "if you don't like it go somewhere else." Because then everyone will and suddenly no one is playing the game anymore. But I guess that seems to be what you're after.

Do you think something will be achieved by sticking around a forum for a game you don't play and resent?

Yeah, don't listen to anyone saying you should accept the game for what it is and not place expectations on it ...

Having been here a while (since before Elite Dangerous was announced), let me pass on my suggestion to you all, something Drew (as clever a man as he is) never realised. Don't place expectations on Elite Dangerous, or on Frontier. Accept the game for what it is. Play the parts you enjoy, leave the parts you don't.

EDIT: And no I'm not being a hypocrite or being sarcastic. I am poking fun at myself. Ultimately, leave, stay, whatever. If Elite Dangerous isn't making you happy, find one that will.

Yea that's nice but if you're sticking around a game for years and your expectations fall short every time it begs the question why stick with it.

As I've said, I don't place expectations on the game.
Let me give you an example, yes I want ship interiors, but I'm not expecting ship interiors.
I expect the game to work, that is an expectation I place on the game .... not ship interiors. Does the game work? Does it launch and play without crashing? For me yes, it does, so it meets my expectations.

I keep saying on this forum that I don't place expectations on the game, ok I do a little bit, but it's usual stuff like launching and not crashing, being playable etc. Do I expect tha game to be what I want it to be? No. There's the difference.

So please explain how my "expectations fall short every time"?

What I said was a broad statement and not aimed at you specifically.

Apologies for the confusion.

There was nothing probably about it, just think about comments made here:

... "mismanaged" and "lacking in direction" because a game doesn't tick their own boxes among some of my favourites...
If you do not consider the launch of Odyssey to be mismanaged, then you must be easily pleased. The lack of direction I am referring to is adding placeholder mechanics and rarely iterated on (e.g. Powerplay). Nothing about ticking my own boxes - I am a player of the game, not the owner of it.
ETA: It's a little like th emembers who have to preface their username with PS4, PS5, VR for whatever reason... I also play in VR, it's fine - exactly what we were told to expect..
It is what we told to expect yet is a retrograde experience and yet it appears as if Odyssey can render in 3D (option in the display settings) and head tracking seems to still work in non-VR mode. So why is VR not able to support head look?
I suppose the expansion being a dog's dinner, yet never explained away, could be put precisely in David Braben's lap too, as he would have approved the launch.. Just as he could approve any other action regarding the game, surely?
Not sure your point. I have no idea who signs off releases in Frontier.
I did say before the silly answers too...

I wouldn't be over bothered with the servers shutting down in, say, a year (because of Odyssey I don't think it would be excellent business decisions to do otherwise) the game has had a good run, and is obviously, according to some, already dying anyway 🤷‍♂️ (why, one kicstarter declared with great authority that the game would be EOL by around Christmas... Although that may just have been because Odyssey, wasn't, just like Drew, what they thought it should be)
As I have already said, I don't have any concerns about the ED servers shutting down at the moment.

For me... I hang around because I was sucker enough to buy a LEP, so I'm in it for the long run regardless, but things like the Azimuth saga are genuinely interesting to me, even if it's not Drew's vision of the lore.

I'm almost done with his hour long video, quite enjoyed it.

Got to the part where he says he doesn't matter, just another guy on the internet. It's the players who put him on a pedestal and bring his name up for all sorts of reason, he didn't asked for all that.

He's leaving ED on good terms.
Yup, and that's why I hold no ill will towards Drew, but to his views being put on a pedestal by players.

Some of the things we expected, were actual promises made during the kickstarter, or later at the launch of Odyssey.
How silly of me to expect an Armstrong moment, just because we were promised an Armstrong moment.
Same for ship interiors.

Not defending Frontier, but I think their definition of an "Armstrong moment" was different to everyone else's definition of an "Armstrong moment".

And to be fair, they have never promised ship interiors.

I guess a lot of people and some YT influencers took this quite literally

I didn't. And i sort of expected a teleport mechanics, although i did expected it to happen on top of the ship' stairs. Which, in hindsight, would have been a not so nice idea since it would have been prolonged the boarding

I am not defending a game, and your assumption that nobody likes it is bizarre. Want to make suggestions or fill in bug reports? Fine, enjoy. Making an hour long video about what compelled the Super Important Ian Skippy to give up on playing FS2020? Lol, that's just attention-craving sadness.

Life is shorter than you may think. Spend it on stuff you enjoy.
