Elite Dangerous - Community Goal FSD Reward and Modification/Application of Experimentals

I'm reading them. I'm literally not defending the fact I was a bit suprised. I'm not even denying it.

Again, don't worry, I do feel as extremely bad about the things you're typing out here as you want me to, and should have cherry picked every single one of those so many bug reports you speak about out, in line with all the other ones that come in.
Again, trying to get stuck in now for you.

That's exactly the kind of meeting being had now - well - to discuss all of these thoughts in line with the original post and what's falling out of it.
Good. No really: I am happy you feel able to address this.

But make no mistake, the people who made these choices RE: this bug fix are being called out. I think it was just laziness, either then, when exp mods worked, or now that they don't work and they don't want to implement a technical solution to whatever is preventing the mod from applying. That's my theory. The other theory, that the designer forgot 5A FSD and the restriction is intentional and forgot to mention it to anyone on the UI or CM side is too depressing to consider. The former is acceptable, as long as its actually fixed.

FSD stats are really just QOL anyway so there isn't a reason to restrict this, so far as I know. Yes these are a big deal because it changes theoretical max jump ranges for a lot of ships but you already decided to do that when releasing the modules in the first place.

When will these be purchasable? The CG wasn't up for very long and CG interest is very hit and miss for me. Its not like I get a push notification for it.

Sorry for the blindsiding…obviously this feature (adding EE pre-engineered modules) was known to the entire community- and all community site guides mention adding MM EE after purchasing the 5A FSD v1 as the finishing touch…

So how to help sort this out and smooth things over?

I for one - had hoped to participate in the CG - but being away on a business trip - didn’t get to start participating until Saturday- and it coincidentally ended before I’d had the chance to make even a single drop off of goods…Anecdotally- there appears to a be a fair number of other Cmdrs who were similarly capable of - and planning to - contribute to the CG - but were effectively “locked out” due to its completion in - near - if not record time (owing obviously to the popularity of the modules being offered)….

As I presume the intention is to make these modules available to the general ED community “in due time” (as was done several months after the 5A FSD v1 was released as a CG prize): please just push up the release to immediately- once you have the EE / Server Issues resolved…

That would rather swiftly put this issue to bed IMO…

Cheers

Senior Community Manager : Elite Dangerous
Re-reading my post, I can see how you could take some parts of it on yourself personally, but please don't do so: when I said "Frontier", I didn't mean you specifically.
Naw I appreciate it. The thing is, I hear "when I said "Frontier", I didn't mean you specifically." a lot, but I myself am a part of Frontier. I'm a cog within Frontier - I am always going to feel responsible no matter what position I'm in because it's my blood at this point, for how soulbound I feel - haha. I appreciate you, honestly.

There are probably several people who were responsible for this situation having happened, but as a Community Manager, you weren't one of them - and while my opinion is not important, I don't think less of you (singular) for any of this.
There are always ways I can improve though, you know? I've picked out a few from this that can actually make me better. Let's go anyway, I'll keep everyone updated.

They shouldn't penalise players who've been using these experimental modules for months because of their oversight.
They shouldn't penalise players because they were not able to compete in a community goal either.

If you start handing out OP stuff, make at least sure all have access to it. If not, asking for ideas about an engineering balance pass doesn't make much sense.

I really think it's time they have a few dedicated players payed to provide feedback. Even if Frontier staff don't play their game to the degree that we do it would have been evident in streams and forum posts what everyone was intending to get them for! Everyone who plays the game knows the reason why you unlock the CG FSD is to eek out the extra experimentals to tune your build.

If I had one piece of advice though it would be to NOT remove the already specialised experimentals added to the size 5. Please don't annoy your player base further by taking away their toys. 2ly jump range will not affect anyone's powerplay or PvP chances etc. And most people have them anyway. Keep it as a special.

Right...It's like, you flip over a stone and then there's a stone under the stone.

Commanders, I've grabbed all your comments on experiences with double engineering on 5As and all sorts of things like that and I'm discussing with the team.
If anyone pings or comments with more experiences of having done this please, can you direct them to this comment of mine?

Going to get my head down with the team on more info.

Thanks o7
Just adding in one more experience... I earned two of the 5A V1 FSD's in the original CG. Immediately put mass manager on both of them. Ever since the 5A V1 was added to the tech brokers every community I have been around where a new player is being mentored - the first thing they are advised to do in progression is get a ship that uses a 5A FSD, obtain the V1, apply mass manager and use it as their mat grinding craft. It has become a staple as have applying experimentals to the double engineered components.

That's exactly the kind of meeting being had now - well - to discuss all of these thoughts in line with the original post and what's falling out of it.
I'm glad more meetings are being had - it means this isn't as set in stone as this thread implies.

No worries, no worries - I'm really sorry that the whirlwind has awakened from this but trust, am on it o7
Thanks for your understanding!
You definitely have understanding; you are after all the messenger and we all know the saying. I do want to raise a point and affirm it strongly though and that is this: These types of decisions are why veterans of the community commonly say "Frontier doesn't play their own game." it shows a complete disconnect from the community and what we are doing with the game that has been so wonderfully delivered to us. Anyone with even a fraction of participation in the community side of Elite has been seeing this happen with the V1 FSD's and other double engineered modules. Sometimes we get server errors but those are rare. Fixing a bug by claiming the gameplay wasn't intended when you have over 8 months of history of people doing said gameplay successfully is bad form.

Also, please don't retroactively nerf all the 5A V1 FSD's I've spent tens of hours gathering materials for and upgrading with mass manager for my fleet of Pythons. Also please don't rob new players of the ability to obtain items vets have. Exclusive time limited items are fun and all - but only if they don't effect gameplay. Nothing quite sucks like being a new player and having the most useful items locked out because you weren't there in time.

Then what is the point of ever having LIMITED RUN TIME EVENTS; if you are just going to hand it out to everyone afterwards/allow them to buy it whenever. The whole point to certain timed events is to make something limited.

Hell, by your logic, they should make CGs never end so everyone can do them whenever they want -- just take away any story related effects they may have.

I have missed out on several CGs, and other items -- but I don't come on here saying they should just keep releasing them no matter what. Kind of takes away from the uniqueness of the items, and really, the purpose of the CG/event.

There's more to this than that. Without the ability to add a special effect, it is practically impossible to use these FSDs on T6/7/9, they run too hot, so in these cases thermal spread is mandatory.

Can't believe it's taken four pages and nobody posted it yet...

The double engineered modules for CG reward was a bad idea and was pointed out when it all started.

FD reap what they sow

Double engineered modules were/are just an unneeded over-complexification

Bad idea - poorly thought out - now another inconsistent implementation

FD, once again, needs to be encouraged to SLOW DOWN and do things right the first time instead of throwing the pot against the wall to see if it can get anything to stick...

Even the WIKI says you can add experimentals to the FSD, see the last line of this excerpt from https://elite-dangerous.fandom.com/wiki/Frame_Shift_Drive

"A unique Class 5 Frame Shift Drive with Increased Range and Faster Boot Sequence named "Engineered FSD V1" can be purchased at Human Technology Brokers. Unlike unlocking most other Technology Broker items, which makes them permanently available for purchase with credits at station outfitting services, unlocking the Engineered FSD V1 immediately places one module in local storage at no additional cost. The module must also be unlocked repeatedly in order to obtain multiple copies.

Applying any other engineering modifications to this module will remove the bonus second modification, but an Experimental Effect can be safely added or replaced."

Well, there are CG goal modules accessible to everyone, but for a much higher price. So not sure what you're getting at...
It is however a limited list, something that adds even more confusion to an already confusing mechanism. Some modules are accessible to all, some aren't, some can be engineered, some can't...

This is getting a mess.
