Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

'CIG clears 5 year technical hurdle' is slightly riskier ;)

(I still suspect you’re pretty safe. A Tier 0 implementation would meet your criteria. I just wouldn’t bet my dinner on a CIG networking delivery going to plan ;))
Well, as i've said before, this time we got the dates from the actual network team and not Chris himself in a fancy roadmap or citcon presentation.

Yes.
Yes.
You are also correct for the alpha but not because CIG or the fans prevent it. If the press is not reviewing it, it's because they see that SC is a real alpha, so reviews are almost pointless. If the gaming journalists are not reviewing it, it's because the alpha is constantly evolving.
Why writing a review on how the alpha handle the cargo when all the cargo mechanisms will be changed in x months ? What is the point for a journalist to write something which will be obsolete in x months ?

You refuse to see the game as an alpha when in reality, it's still an alpha. It's an alpha for CIG, it's an alpha for the gaming press, it's an alpha for backers. The only ones not seeing it as an alpha are haters.
Plenty of games in Early Access (alpha or beta) get reviewed by the gaming press, and gamers too if said games are on Steam. Such games evolve over time, with new reviews/impressions articles made as follow-ups.

Eurogamer once did an impressions write-up of the Alpha:
It didn't go down well with the "white knights" on Reddit at the time, receiving a ton of downvotes (69% votescore) trying to hide it, and probably got similar flak in other small SC communities too:

Seeing how people will gladly pay $600 for a jpeg of a ship that might be years away (the functionality to support it is certainly years away) I do wonder if it provokes much discussion inside other companies. I could see fdev putting out a "Pledge today to see the Panther Clipper in game! Pledge now to get a unique paint job and free rebuys forever! Only $300" option.

SC has proved there is a market, I bet it's tempting - if only to see how big that market is ...

Eurogamer want me to turn my Adblock off or sub for £7 so i can't read it.... never mind.

Edit, it was written in January 2018, its completely irrelevant now.

I see it as a pre-alpha.

Backers sometimes don't see it as an alpha when they are talking about it like a released product.
Guess those backers are haters! :p
They say it's playable, enjoyable and explain what they do in it now, they don't say it's a released product.

For sure when you talk about mining in SC (for instance), it's almost as if you were talking about a released product, because the gameplay loop is 100% functionnal now. But despite being 100% functionnal (and enjoyable), the mining gameplay loop is not finished and not the one we will get at release. It does not have for example the final cargo mechanism.

Can you imagine the salt. And the angry flashing fdev forum avatars!

Well yeah, from the same ppl in here who don't understand SC getting funding :)

As long as it is like SC and you can earn everything in-game (eventually) then I don't know - I think you could offer pre-engineered existing ships as well as the usual JPG pledges - as long as they are massive prices. $600 custom Fleet Carrier layout with no upkeep? Some would go for it ...

We were talking about it being released or not. Not whether its playable or enjoyable. Released carries a certain status.

Oh no doubt some would do it, but we'd move from a company that can be shaky in it's decisions and implementation, to a company with no ethics

We've kind of had that here already with the early-pledge offers in kickstarter, specifically with the Cobra and I-Eagle pledge levels as I recall.
