Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

I see your HIMEM.SYS and raise you either EDLIN.COM or EMM386.EXE (whichever is worse)
Don't miss QEMM~!!!

IIRC, DOOM need HIMEN to run, others like Simcity need EMM386 or QEMM, didin't remember Duke3D need both HIMEM & EMM386 or not.

Then this recall my very early gaming day with a multi-boot floopy will all the option above plus DOS-V for game with Japanese/Chinese characters..

I do miss the days when games came bundled with some printed media to make them feel more immersive. There were a few in the 90s did it really well; FE2 came with all the short stories, Syndicate and I think UFO Enemy Unknown both did their gameplay manuals in-character.

Not that I mind having in-game tutorials, I used the ED ones yesterday to remind myself of the controls before I took my actual ship out of the station, but paper feels nice.
THIS, I still have this Falcon 4.0 Manual. This one seems to be sort of deluxe edition released years after my purchase, mine was without the hard cover.

Duke3D does not need EMM386 for sure. It's a DOS4GW program like DOOM, these put the CPU in protected mode to be able to address memory without the real-mode 64 kB segment limitations, making programming way easier. EMM386 itself requires HIMEM as it needs some place where to put the emulated expanded memory blocks. It's a horrible hack, but also the only way of having more than 1 megabyte of addressable memory on a 8086/8088.
