4 RESKIN animal META-WISHLIST!

I've seen coyotes, there are differences, but they're similar enough to be a reskin.
Ooh, cool.

Here we to, DarthQuell's Rockin' Reskins:

I wanted to make 1 reskin animal from each continent, so there:
  • Base game
    1. Coyote - gray wolf reskin
    2. Masai giraffe - reticulated giraffe reskin
    3. Greater rhea - common ostrich reskin
    4. Lion-tailed macaque - Japanese macaque reskin
  • DLC
    1. Yellow-footed rock wallaby - red kangaroo reskin
    2. Red deer - fallow deer reskin
Ok, replaced.

Bobcat - European lynx
Black (Woodward's) wallaroo - red kangaroo
Barbary ape - Japanese macaque

What’s everyone’s thoughts on crowned lemur over ring tailed lemur? It’s not exact, but I feel like it falls within the leeway granted by the black and white ruffed precedent.

I feel like this has the potential to devolve really quickly. I wouldn't consider the bighorn sheep a 1:1 reskin of the Dall sheep, for example. They are morphologically similar, but would you consider the southern white rhinoceros a 1:1 reskin of the Indian rhinoceros? I'd say the changes needed to make either the bighorn sheep or white rhinoceros would be equal to, say, the changes needed to make the red fox out of the Arctic fox, which has been excluded.

The criteria I always consider is behaviour and model. A "reskin" animal, in terms of "ease of creation" for the developers, would be one that requires the most minimal possible changes to the base rig while at the same time having the most minimal possible changes to the animal's behaviours. The black-and-white ruffed lemur is a good example because although there were some minor model adjustments made they behave fairly similarly to the red ruffed lemur.

So for me, a list of four would be thus;
1. Sumatran tiger. A slightly smaller, less bulky Bengal tiger with a new colour.
2. Eastern black rhinoceros. Slight adjustments made to the southern white rhinoceros.
3. Sika deer. Slight adjustments made to the fallow deer (would even still be a walkthrough animal).
4. Tufted capuchin. Slight adjustments made to the Colombian white-faced capuchin.

  1. American Flamingo (flamingo)
  2. Greater Rhea (ostrich)
  3. Nile Crocodile (croc)
  4. Forest Buffalo (buffalo)
DLC:
  1. Afro-Australian Fur Seal (california sea lion)
  2. Asian Small-clawed Otter (giant otter if possible) Alternative: Spectacled Bear (sun bear)

When we talk about potential 'reskin' animals, there is always going to be disagreement. What some people might regard as even a 'clone', could be seen as a completely unique animal by others, including the devs. So the whole thing tends to be a bit subjective. There are so many things involved: rig, model, fur, animations, sounds, behaviour, requirements...

Props to yoav for starting this though, every piece of feedback is welcome.

Also a couple of suggestions to include in the list:
Humboldt penguin based on African penguin.
Iberian ibex based on Alpine ibex.

I actually dreamed last night that they surprise released a cheaper "biodiversity" pack alongside today's Europe Pack. First time I recall dreaming about this game, lol.

May as well go ahead and formally throw out a vote, I'll make it nice and simple because I really can't bring myself to expect more than close to the bare minimum for this sort of pack (and honestly, I don't need more than the bare minimum to be very happy in such a scenario):
  • Grevy's zebra
  • Masai giraffe
  • Roan antelope
  • Caribbean flamingo
We need more variety in our African areas, and while I'd love to supplement them with red river hogs and porcupines and fossas as much as the next person, I actually think the first three species here would do absolute wonders for making each of our zoos feel a little bit more unique from one another's. Honestly I'd stuff another antelope in here too if I felt there was a good one that doesn't pass the too-different threshold. But everything else, from the bontebok to the greater kudu to the greater eland to the addax, feels decidedly too distinct to pass muster here. And regardless, I really do want to see the more eye-popping flamingos.

I very strongly don't expect animals based on prior DLC to show up in a reskin context, but my votes there would go for:
  • Harbor seal
  • Brown capuchin

I have chosen some that I definitely think would fit, even if they aren't on the original list:

Base game reskin species
  • Caribbean flamingo from the greater flamingo (a rather commonly-kept species that could represent both North and South America)
  • Northern giraffe from the reticulated giraffe (includes two subspecies fairly common in European zoos - the Nubian (Rothschild's) and Kordofan giraffes)
  • Sitatunga from the nyala (more commonly kept here in Europe, also has a broader range of biomes)
  • Sumatran orangutan from the Bornean orangutan (has enough slight but noticeable differences, some zoos do keep both species)

DLC reskin species
  • Humboldt penguin from the African penguin (this is the species I am more familiar with)
  • Banded mongoose from the meerkat (I think this would need tiny cosmetic changes akin to the black-and-white ruffed lemur, such as slight changes to head shape and tail thickness, along with the coat colour and sounds)

If the mongoose is not a close enough match, I would choose:
  • Yellow breasted capuchin from the white faced capuchin (a quite colourful and extremely endangered species that is fairly common in European zoos)

As an added bonus (one that I don't expect to be counted), an exhibit species that could be made with some changes to size and colouration would be the Alpine longhorn beetle, made from the Titan beetle. It could use the new temperate display that came with the Europe Pack, is a more threatened and strikingly coloured insect and has at least some captive representation, with them being bred at the Nordens Ark in Sweden.

To be honest the criteria for what qualifies as a "reskin" is rather subjective. I'd personally redefine a "reskin" as any animal whose genus already exists in the game. This would be much more quantifiable, leading to high-quality survey data.
I agree that you should give a good definition of a reskin as it might be subjective. Is a reskin an animal which can be made by only adapting the texture files, so changing the color and patterns, like different giraffe (sub)species. Or do you mean animal clones, an animal that uses a model that is slightly adapted, like how you would need to change the white rhino model to make a black rhino and how the red ruffed lemur was adapted into the white ruffed. Just adding a beard to a model like with the lemur, is still changing the model. And how much can a model be changed?
For example, removing the wattle and helmet from the helmeted cassowary to make different cassowary species, is that allowed? Changing the nose on the proboscis monkey and using this for making langurs? Changing the head and body shape of the badger to make the honey badger?
