To Solo Play Players: If You Could Disable PVP, Would You Play in Open Play Mode Instead?

Again with this? My short answer is no. The probability of meeting a griefer in systems besides the usual SD, Deci, Sol etc. is next to nil anyway, and if you absolutely NEED to go to systems like them for one reason or another (of which these reasons are sparse anyways), go there in solo. The possibility of getting killed at any moment adds excitement and adrenaline to an otherwise boring and lonely game.

Venturing into the unknown is dangerous, not everyone you're gonna meet is cute and cuddly...

I don't play "OPEN" because of PVP Gankers.
That means meaking NEW friends is harder (but not impossible).

Therefore as much as it is a nice idea to have some sort of PVP "limiter" or "shield" or "whatnot-thingymidga" button I think in essence it wouldn't be "Dangerous" no more.
Let PVP-ers have their open and gank each other as they want.
Thats why I have solo mode for myself and group mode for my mates.

It would be amusing to see what would happen if Fdev were to add a PvE mode, I suspect PvPers would get very lonely.

There should be an extra choice. If there was a choice between Solo, Group, Open (PvE) and Open (PvPvE), I would play in Open (PvE) 100% of the time.
While at the moment I'm Solo >99% of the time, and Group/Open <1%.

I think it'd be a much easier sell to my friends that are somewhat interested in starting the game as well. They like online games with a bit of 'life' to them, but I can't recommend that they start out playing in Open as it is.

Yes that was my suggestion as well. Seems like the best solution.

I don't know how closely FDev pay attention to these threads, but presumably someone has already stated the obvious that they would make LOADS MORE MONEY if they did this, because more players would be interacting with each other far more and many more would BUY ARX to get skins and body-kits knowing that other players will actually see them, and from seeing other players have cool combinations that they then check out in the store themselves.

It's a win-win (for everyone except gankers)

Got the stats and numbers to prove this, or is this the usual faux logic that gets thrown around?

Why is it you can't go three pictures in Inara's gallery without seeing a brightly painted ship 20,000ly from anyone else, in some remote system?

Mate, this whole "people would buy more stuff if they can do PvE" is the dumbest argument I have ever seen that is literally based on emotion, the worst thing to base any design choices on.

And again, ganking is legit gameplay.

Get over it.

I think most of the sociable players are already in active squadrons and/or PG - meaning they already would be incentives in your model to buy bling to show off.

"Lone wolves", for want of a better word, aren't particularly interested showing off in from of other random players I would assume.

In my 100% open gameplay experience, most CMDRs I don't know don't even respond to an 07, though I have enjoyed buzzing SRVs at the barnacle sites - and enjoyed trying to evade asymmetric combat at CGs/Deciat.

More and better social tools, and perhaps the inclusion of the third party tool like EDRecon (that gives recent activity/bounties etc) would perhaps mitigate the unknown quantity of CMDRs somewhat - but that's probably a different thread.

Indeed. Cosmetics are one of the main shares of ED revenues over time... once some one kaboomed my Python because of the pirate paint job :D :D :D we had big laughs after.

I don't have the stats, but EA, Activision, Microsoft and other game companies do, and they're pushing out games where they try to get as big a multi-player base in as possible and then market cosmetics to them, and making they're millions in the process. I'm not in favour of it, but ED already has the cosmetics system there so the battle on that point is lost, and if it incentivized FDev to actually give more players modes they want to play in the game together then it's a win-win.

'Basing things on emotion' is incredibly IMPORTANT in making design choices in games, because all we're doing is playing with digital toys, so how it makes the players feel is the whole point.

Bruh almost all those games from those devs, with microtransactions and skins are heavily PvP-focused.

Nice job shooting yourself in the foot.

Ganking is legit gameplay. It's just not gameplay that most people enjoy. All these threads happen because in ED we all have ways to avoid ganks if we want to, and the thread originators would rather we didn't. The irony is that if we do ever get PvE mode, it'll be these threads which raised the issue above FD's awareness threshold.

I don't know of anything to show that FD will ever implement this, but they do bring things out suddenly (engineers; carriers; legs), and it is the route almost all multi-player games take.

That thing flying over your head is the point.

It's not about whether the mode is PvE or PvP, it's about creating modes that people want to play together. By your logic CQC should be the most popular part of ED, yes?

I tend to agree with Brokk, my own take is as long as they leave an "anything goes" Open I'll be happy. Icing on the cake would be a meta PvP activity (like Powerplay) that's only for open, leaving the BGS affected by all modes ofc.

I don't doubt the intentions of the OP, but as usual they offer a solution without understanding the issues Solo (& PG to a certain extent) CMDRs have with Open first.
