Elite Dangerous: Horizons & Odyssey Update 16/12/2021 Notes

Nothing wrong with being nice. But it isn't logical calling broken updates "hard work" with a thank you bolted on.
Okay, so let me get this right. Fdev releases an update, some nice people thank them for their efforts in the (to quote you) "first replies".

Bugs become apparent over the hours and days following the update.

What do you want those nice people to do, edit their thanks out?

All a bit weird.

Missing the point entirely. Why are the initial replies even worded the way they are with all the extra boot polish? That's all I'm saying. There's nothing "hard work" about a company consistently releasing untested and broken updates/patches. I've seen it happen since the game came out, with increasing frequency and blatancy. I don't mind a thank you for a patch, but leave out the extra praise when all they're offering is band aids to otherwise still broken content, whilst breaking other stuff in the process usually.

By the time I already re-set my FGs on the ships I fly regularly and made screenshots of them... Just in case...
At least I can live with it for this case as I rarely change them when they are once set up and proven working.

But I think for those combat pilots out there, the current issues are not so easy to fix :(

For now I think I'll just do a bit of mats farming, exploring and stay out of trouble until things have been patched up.

So far:
  • Thank you FDev and all members of the community team.
  • Take some time off and relax everyone, it has been a busy and strange year.
  • Stay safe and healthy

Oh and:
- Thanks to all the nice CMDRs out there - I never had such a warm welcome into a new community as I received within ED. I really wish, I'd started this game way more early.

See you in the black.

In agreement, not only is it "a bit weird", I'm inclined to call such thinking rather rotten.

Sure, while Update 9 brought some nice stuff, it also brought along a pile of bugs of varying nastiness. My guess in there was some pretty fragile code (probably a lot of duplicate code that needs to be cleaned up*) in there that the changes required from U9 trampled all over, and none of it came to light until we got our hands on it. In other words, I think that despite the issues, the devs deserve all the thanks they've received, and then some (or a lot, even).

* Just this weekend, I cleaned out almost 4k lines (> 1%) from my project, all duplicate code (and there's still some in there than can be cleaned up further).

The same devs who knew Odyssey was a mess yet used their community as testers to keep them in the loop with what was wrong with their own product?

I don't mind praise where deserved, but Frontier have blatantly and arrogantly sold a lie which has taken many months to reform enough to resemble somewhat what they advertised and sold to players. There's nothing OK with that in my opinion. Especially where console players have been left to rot, with "no news" and no intent to offer next gen iterations as it stands, also.

I don't like dissing the company in the way I read off here, but I can't hide the fact the pattern to this over the years has become so deliberate on their part.

Anyways, it is what it is. I just hope in the end things do come together. In the meantime, I just want Frontier to stop using us as testers at our own expense and actually start delivering the quality control they purport to care about.

Yes, I am still able to reproduce this problem like on this screenshot:

In this specific case on the screenshot, as all groups are empty, empty groups on the right side of right-most non-empty group may already be fixed.
However, the bug when all groups are empty is still there.
It seems that it is fixed now:

The "B" empty group has gone :)
Thanks for the patch.

Why is PC getting getting new content. While us console players dont even get any news on basic odyssey release. This is disappointing.

Technically it isn’t the PC users getting the new content, there is nothing released on Horizons that is PC specific the new content is Odyssey only which admittedly is only available on PC at the moment, but not all PC users have Odyssey.

@Paul_Crowther FYI for broken issues to feed back to the dev team; listed below.

So disappointed this game is so broken. When it works it is beautiful, but now it's like an unfinished tech demo now as many of the things I tried tonight with my brother in a wing didn't work! The known issues should be far longer, as we found from just a short, frustrating and broken session:
1. Shadows around garrisons are crazy.
2. Lots of flickering in the Viper IV cockpit.
2b. Viper IV interdiction is almost seizure-inducing as the stars go crazy and the entire cockpit goes nuts/shakes around.
3. Lighting in the concourse of a "Horizons" planetary port is wrong if you stand by the adverts by the bar or stand between the frontline solutions desk and the apex taxi desk, on the balcony facing the hangar lifts. The entire area is lit up as if an extra light source has been added. It disappears if you face the other way.
4. Remove faction members missions are broken. Landing at a base controlled by the pirate faction, only 3 enemies spawned and they were labelled "pirate". None of the kills counted to the mission tally. Landing at another base to try there, no enemies were spawned at all.
5. None of the dead bodies are scannable at bases, so at the completely empty useless bases in issue 4, you couldn't even get into the buildings to look around.
6. Flying to a high risk resource site, attacking a wing was dangerous as the horrific "hostile" issue raised its head and you had no idea who was firing at you.
6b. Some of the enemy ships flew around dumbly, not firing back.
7. Landing at irregular markers, the cargo canisters appeared in the air and fell to the ground.
8. The new SRV is ok but with a crewman on board, it is IMPOSSIBLE to assign any of the fire groups to the gunner role. For a "headline" new feature, this is the most offensive part - sitting in the back you can see hardly anything and can't actually DO anything. Did anyone even try this out?!?!?!!!
9. Sound sometimes cuts out on exiting supercruise and doing a boost. How many times can this be "fixed"?? Honestly.
10. It is still possible to fire a weapon and change the trajectory of the weapon after firing, simply by moving your aim after you fire. This is most evident on the "sniper" plasma gun.
11. In team mode, there are many odd squares and markers that litter the universe and overlay the HUD and dashboard of a ship. I have no idea what they point to. What are they??
12. When a faction is at war, if you filter the galaxy map by "war", none of the systems in that state show up. It makes the map completely pointless and you have to rely on external websites to find conflict zones.
13. Putting the Viper IV into FA-off and gliding towards a planet, thrusters keep firing every second for no reason.

How about patch 10 involves few new features and just bug fixes? It's chronic.
Going to give playing this over the break a miss at it's so blatantly untested.

EDIT: One excellent thing was that the framerates were really good and everything was super smooth - just few things worked in terms of actual gameplay/things to do. Smooth and beautiful, but broken.

Because we paid for Odyssey and expecting us to wait a year+ for new content wouldn't go down well.
Curious what obligation they have to add more content for EDO? They have an obligation to get performance to an acceptable level, but other than that they don't owe you anything more. I mean, they will add content to keep players and entice new players, but it's not owed to you. It's kind of funny that you say that them not adding new content wouldn't go well when there's still a lot of complaints about performance. So, which is it you really want?

All that being said they don't owe EDH CMDRS anything either. We'd like access to EDO at some point. It's that or the console player base will start to get bored with the same old content and move on.

12 days ago my firegroups were lost on all 36 of my ships - patch 9
After 12 days and two hotfix patches I still have no idea if the firegroups will return or if I need to remap.

All I want for Christmas is clarity.
