Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

Us, you missed us lot....
I've been sitting in my comfy chair by the fire reading through 'Blood of Elves' again for the last few days. T'interweb got a bit out of sorts with the winds... a few of the 100mph+ gusts blew all the larger 1100mm dishes at the major link points around facing them the wrong way so we had no net connection :)

I envy you, i can't get in to reading the way most can, i'm dyslexic, its the NetFlix version for me i'm afraid :(
It's been way too long since I actually sat down and read anything on paper at all, T'interweb is a wonderful thing but there's way too many pictures to distract from reading the words and using the imagination to form your own images :D

I've read some of those a good while back, never got the whole set. Something to dig out now that I've rediscovered my love of reading :)

Nice to hear someone else has read them. He spins a good yarn with a good few twists.

I guess you haven't read the prequel stuff that he wrote in the last few years then. You read Riyria Revelations i guess?

The prequel (Legends) really flesh out the world and what happened before Revelations. Some really interesting twists there and explanations as to why things are the way they are in Revelations.

Now currently reading the first of the Rise and Fall books, but will have to wait until Summer 2022 and 2023 for the next two. In the meantime, i'll read the Chronicles.

I apologised to you for any misunderstanding. You called me an incel.

Think about that.

My intention was not to call you out 'as' an incel, i don't know you, i'm sure you're a very sociable guy, it was a description of how i saw your reaction to what i said.

A game is more than its history, a named person and a collection of code, trying to describe it in that way is not "evangelising" it, that's the trope you keep falling back on.

I bet he hasn't played Wartales yet. Also a survival game in early access, but already feels much more "finished" than SC and ED and comes up with many fresh ideas. An open-world RPG with interesting quests? They have certainly achieved this rare feat.

I don't do overhead type RPG, i don't even like 3'rd person view shooters and i like shooters.

This sounds familiar. For a good part of my life as a gamer, I had to struggle with my own habits and prejudices. What you mention was also an absolute no-go for me for many years. I wish I had known what I was missing.

Fair enough tho its not out of prejudice, '30 years ago' Command and Conquer was the thing i couldn't get enough of, as well as the original Gran Turismo, 1 and 2, weird combination i know... but this is really weird, i'm the guy who always drives Bumper Cam, go firgure, i don't like that external view, but i'll make exceptions.

There are100% areo effects in atmo that are more than affecting max speed. Maybe you don't do anything that would make you notice, maybe you dont actually play at all, hard to say.
You assume a lot.
I do play quite a bit. Tried with different ships. Atmo effet is just a damper on everything. They even put resistance to turn whereas in atmo a ship with proper aero surfaces should be actually able to turn tighter.

It is most noticeable when dog fighting in atmo and the only way to do that until very recently was to fight other players.
Been doing quite a few bounties in atmo. Yeah it's still zero realism, as of patch 3.16.1. Sorry the FM doesnt cut it, it's still really "arcade shoot em up". Ships behave in a completely unrealistic manner as compared to what you could get in KSP+FAR for instance, or winged planes in DCS (compared to the Sabre for instance, which looks like a regular winged fighter jet).

Fair enough. Still, best to avoid throwing around terms like incel, its highly offensive.

C&C Generals was the best C&C game ever.

There, i said it!

There are two journalists who have actually taken the time to study Star Citizen for their journalism, both of them conclude it has problems while at the same time is unique, what is there is amazing and it has incredible potential, they both agree it is a game.

The Digital Foundry one is now out of date, the game has come a long way since then, ironically.

The Techlinked one is much more recent.

I’ve no idea why you keep bringing up the Digital Foundry vids as journalism. They are, at best, opinion pieces written by an admitted uber-fan. That is not journalism.

And they're not outdated precisely. Huge swathes of them were nonsense at the time. It's just become even more clear in retrospect ;)

Fun to catch up on his tech expectations after nearly 2 years though :)

Expectations (Oct 2019):

"It’s not 100% there yet. As I see it there are about three main things getting in the way of that vision coming together."

  • Player Count: Server Meshing, "where multiple servers work in a lattice and hand off information and simulation tasks to each other cooperatively, is still in development and something to be added in the future…"
  • AI Behaviour: "SOCS will intelligently cull and time slice aspects of simulation, so much more of it can happen at any given time. Paving the way for more detailed AI simulation." [12m20s]
  • Full Persistence: "Full on persistence tracking for item placement, or the status of all the NPCs and characters… is scheduled in the future to come out concurrently with SOCS." [13m30s]

Well we got SOCS. Shame the other stuff didn’t happen :/

Linus at least gets near some of the principles of actual journalism (multiple sourcing, right to reply etc). Although he still doesn't come close to the higher end output that Dementropy cites.

I get that you don't like that other journalism because it's mainly critical of SC, and focused on the big picture question of whether SC is a crowd-funding boondoggle, rather than primarily on the gameplay experience. But they have definitely 'studied' Star Citizen. In quite some detail.

The gaming industry is out of ideas and very risk averse, its the grey gruel of mediocrity that perpetually leaves you dissatisfied.

If that stereotype was true I wouldn't be able to play a huge spread of novel indie titles and full blown AAAs in virtual reality for a start. But I can. Because it's just a daft trope...

Wouldn't exactly call the Forbes article "bad journalism". It was a well researched piece, with sources and data. Just because you don't like what a journalist says doesn't make what they say "bad".

What's bad is giving a company with more money than any other game company out there cart blanche with regards to they can do no wrong. Idc how good SC is or will be in some future far off land.

CIG is in the business of bait switching people with dreams and possibilities and should be prosecuted for it. Will they? Not likely. But it's nice to dream. And free, if you don't give CIG money (don't).

Yes, its a cynic's ramblings about the joy of others, like the incel in the dark corner of the room.

Lol, what the hell. First you misunderstand his post entirely (he's addressing the 'AAA gaming is doing nothing experimental of worth' argument, not your personal tastes or anyone else's, and he makes that clear). And then you lash out on that basis.

You're really racking up the classy over-reactions pal...

like a self proclaimed comedian who you quickly discover is just an angry feminist

Besides, this word makes absolutely no sense in this context. My translator doesn't even know it, I had to consult Urban Dictionary to learn its meaning. One of the possible explanations is quite telling: "A word invented by misandrists that has no meaning and is applied to men".

So hardly a word that can seriously offend anyone (except perhaps the one who puts it in his mouth), don't you think?

Its meaning is well known around the web. Its basically a man who can't get a woman and then transforms that into a hate for all women.
