Update on Communication

Not derogatory - as I have been using the term for years.

Think conglomeration of Playstation and Xbox... Of which I had both, personally, when I coined the term.
But this is off-topic, allegedly.
I prefer 'X Station' because it sounds dangerous and sexy.

On topic, my guess now is the resumption of livestreams / weekly bits will continue when Update 11 is released- U10 came out of the blue (and on time with the same cadence).

It's only dangerous if you cross your arms in front of your face each time you say it though.

I'm no marketing expert and all but I'd think if FDev go down this route, would this really be the best way to keep player engagement high?

It works fine for SP games with barely any changes in-game, but with an MMO (lite) game like Elite, such a "you won't hear from us until you do" approach might make it easier for people to disengage completely and just move on to something else (which is perhaps not a bad thing for those people's mental state ;)) who won't pay attention to weekly events and cosmetics sales (i.e. £££ for Frontier) any longer as a side-effect.

Elite is one of these games you always come back to ...Ohhh Neil Armstrong moment let's have a look , Ohhh new Srv let's have a look, Ohhh FC interiors let's have a look, Ohhh update 54 let's have a look . Ohhh they fixed power play let's have a look ( sorry) . And those who are in charge know it .

I hope that FDev get this sorted before the 25th Feb.
it will be a very awkward conversation in two weeks time at the Christmas Festive Meet-up if people still haven‘t been told anything.

A year after Console release was pulled from EDO, I can’t imagine ‘coming to current Gen early 2022’ will calm the baying mobs.
I would like to assume that they’ll announce something bigger - I.e. Cross platform for all.

A simple, ’here’s a once a week stream where we go on a mission to shoot x NPCs / no news on console yet‘ will inflame everyone.

I've seen it said before that Frontier like to keep ED players separate from the rest. A concern (and justifiable one at that) that the others will get drowned out in any discussion.
I mean, that makes perfect sense to me, I wouldn't want posters start random stuff about dinosaurs and theme park hedge trimming techniques in DD either (though at least that'd give us something to talk about....).

Maybe cross-IP posts on the generic news section of Frontier's forum like the one by Jens aren't a good idea if one particular IP is considered persona-non-grata outside of the [redacted] sub-forum.

Which is why it's probably better to assume nothing at this stage. After last year I've a feeling that plans are being redrawn and as a result that's going to push out some timelines.

Looking at where we are I have no expectations for Odyssey on console until 2023. If I'm wrong, there's a happy surprise.

I'll answer that:

Because ED has it's own forum to discuss matters related to ED, and we do not want to have any of the games be an arena for discussions that have absolutely nothing to do with them.

It keeps the forums readable and followable, so that for instance Anyone wanting to follow an Ed discussion does not have to go to the JWE forums to do so.

So, please help everyone by keeping comments related to a specific game in the proper forum.
The 3 games that are mentioned in the streaming schedule also have their own areas for discussion.

I suggested that the games that have information about streaming could be mentioned in the title, that is not going to happen because, well no reason was given. It seemed a reasonable compromise until Elite streams are back.

If you book a hotel, better hope Frontier doesn't tell you on March 25th that the meet-up is canceled. 🤣

Okay, sorry. That's enough for now.

As Robert Maynard says commenting on individuals is not okay, although I believe that usually it is only removed if the person the comments are about reports the post to attract the attention of a moderator.
Of course a post has to be reported to be noticed... Look at how many remain here that are obviously "off-topic" when the topic is a communication from the "Lead Community Manager" that discusses their own communication strategy change.

Arf was kind enough to drop in to pass on a few words to "the community" and here we are, 30 pages in, discussing pretty much anything but the content of that post.

To be fair, there isn't a whole lot of content in it. It's a post in corporatespeak that was directed to customers, and it's not surprising that a good portion of the customers aren't particularly satisfied with it.

People could be forgiven for thinking that the Frontier Developments news and announcements forums are also the forums used to communicate information to those that play ED.

But is player engagement on this forum == in game engagement? It comes down to the amount of players who visit these forums / watch livestreams- and....its not huge going by the sidebar. Back after KS and pre 1.0 the forums mattered because the entire audience were in that forum. As time has gone on thats dwindled and now places like Discord (where there are many more people- at least from my own experiences) live and don't give a monkeys about this forum unless its for something relevant (and simply ignore everything else).

The majority of livestreams are tiny views wise (live at least) when there is no news, so you (with these 'low ebb' streams) are spinning wheels really. Its only when the big announcements come where viewers really engage with them- and generally its having devs chat, new art etc to look at which brings people in.

So really to me this forum, its drama etc is simply a vestigial concern for FD. People may feel despondent and leave (sometimes several times over) but its not a place FD need to worry about.

In the end FD need to build hype around things that have a solid foundation. I'd be happy if we had a packed stream before a release with devs etc, and then a stream playing the release with art etc to show what went into the new feature. Everything else is frankly pointless fluff very few people want to engage with- watching someone play ED is dull, livestreams are generally popular for Drops or something other than playing the game ironically. If it were me? I'd have concept pic of the week (from the archives but also new upcoming content), more written dev interviews (with real questions, not - "What is your ideal Sunday?") and when devs ask for balance ideas we clearly see input gathered, the devs thoughts and a defined outcome across several areas that can vary in size.
