ED on Consoles just died official

The last 3 years of silence and table scrap updates for consoles was a pretty big indicator for me that console development was dead in the water. I tried to tell y’all.

Something was suspicious about only having 1 dev working skins for console and leaving the game in a bug ridden state. Mauve adder my boiz. Scarlet krait, and have a happy Taupe Cobra.

P.S.

Orange sidewinder.

Console players have been forgotten.

It is a bitter pill, and it is definitely not easy to swallow. And not only is it a bitter pill that is hard to swallow, but it is being given to us by Dr. Kevorkian. And while some may say that the base game is still available, one would have to wonder in regards to how long (ask any Mac OS player about update 3.3)? Obviously, it is the decision of the individual console player on whether they should continue their ED career, but it should be realized that continuing is only satisfying a basic craving, one of which is in danger of being cut off, or at the very lease, grown tired of. Many will disagree with me, but as I feel, console players should take hold of some respect for ourselves and dump Frontier before they completely dump us. The day may come where consoles players will be shut down completely. I simply feel that we should have some dignity and leave before they kick us out.

I play on Xbox Series X, PS5, and PC, and was quietly loyal to Elite Dangerous. Yet, this decision is such a abysmal insult to the loyal console fanbase that we, the console players, seem to have only one choice, which is to maintain some dignity. Perhaps others will disagree, and I will respect that, but when do we draw the line.

I know that some may try to defend, or explain, Frontier's decision, and I can understand that. I will not fault any console player for continuing gameplay, for it is sometimes difficult to recognize when something is in its terminal stages. But I look at Frontier's relationship with its playerbase as an unhappy marriage. How I see it, why would you stay with a partner who continuously cheats on you, who continuously lies to you? Regardless of emotional ties or physical needs, there comes a time when you have to say, "Enough".

I believe that this is an ill-fated step that Frontier has made. Nevertheless, the company is free to make whatever business decisions they want, even if it is a poorly made one. Having said this, I find it difficult to continue playing ED after being told directly that we have been, more or less, shut out.

It should be noted that this decision to abandon development on consoles was not made overnight, which mean for the past year that console players have been strung along, waiting for the Odyssey DLC (some even upgrading to Xbox Series X and PS5), still dedicated to playing ED, still buying their merchandise, still buying the game as a whole, all while Frontier knew that they would be cutting off console players in the near future.

Again, where do we drawn the line.

This is a sad day, and it is a sad day for not only console players, but for PC players as well. Some PC players may say, "Oh well, sucks to be you", but if they believe that this poor decision by Frontier will not eventually affect them, they are being naïve. Elite Dangerous had great potential, and even after approximately eight years, it still had a future. For some, if not many, the hope of that future is gone, so it is time to move on.

Or at least move on before being thrown out.

Don't get me wrong, I would be perfectly content with keeping playing Horizons on Xbox in its current form. If Elite remained like this for the next ten years, I would still play it. Exploring the galaxy, taking part in applicable CGs, winging up with friends, enjoying my ships and such. But my fear is that this oppurtinity will be taken away from us soon as well, for whatever reason.
I don’t think we will have CGs any more. Or BGS!

It’s worse than what happened to cyberpunk, at least CD Red made an effort in fixing the problem and not T bagging the console community

Cyberpunk is actually pretty awesome on Series X now. I wish Frontier carried on with console Odyssey. Yes, it may have run badly on last gen machines but the PS5 and Series consoles would have powered through most of the performance issues. We could have at least kept playing, kept spending, and further optimisation could've done in time. Instead we got nothing.

And the worst thing is that we probably will never get an explanation. We now have sufficiently powerful consoles, dedicated (if small) player base on both platforms, and we're simply thrown under the bus. Console development surely can't be that hard, they're all x86 now, and with 7+ years of experience on Frontier's side.

I bet some higher-up at the company decided this was a good idea. Someone who never played, who's not even an Elite fan, just looks at spreadsheets all day. I hope they're looking at their stock prices closely now.

Another possibility is that Elite lost its vision completely and development is winding down as a whole. And they saw no point of converting Odyssey for that few remaining years.

Agreed but you what gets me is that I brought Xbox series X and a Hotas just for Elite Odyssey at Xmas to be ready and this happens all that money, all that overtime and hard work looking forward to walk around a planet and explore and I get T-baged with this.

i bought a oneX with horizons a year ago, luckily i had the forethought and bought NMS as well, as thats still going 😉

It also has on foot gameplay, yeah its not Elite but we aint getting that on consoles

With David Brabens new Message its clear thad ED on Consoles just died. I hope we will be able to transfer our progress and ARX to PC for those who want to do so.
Horizons will continue in its present state for a long time. Therefore not dead right?
What was made clear that they want to proceed with one codebase to properly advance the story and progression.
I hoe they will too. Look at it this way, no more paying gamepass, no need for crossplay, lots of Hotas/ screen options ...

IMHO: Odyssey ain't coming consoles because essentially no one has been able to get any new model console for 2 years and why bother for the PS 4 or Xbox SMH

I don't want to post this in the main thread because I don't want to draw all the hate and mocking of the pc players and I have no idea of programming but in the end it's the impression you leave on other people that counts, even if they're not always understanding why you're doing certain things. And my impression of frontier at the moment is that they're just not good enough to make odyssey at least on current generation consoles happen and I wouldn't expect miracles to happen on the pc version now where consoles are gone.

I deleted the game from the console and will delete it from the PC as soon as I turn it on again. Goodbye frontier, goodbye elite dangerous and "dear frontier" I wish you to become a kangaroo in a world of low ceilings

oh just get a PC, I can't get a PS5 so suffer
I have a PC. Again, I've had the Xbox CMDR since 2015 and asking me to just delete it and forget it if I want to play Odyssey is such a kick in the teeth.
Both console communities have made a huge contribution to Elite and asking us to forget all that and just start again isn't acceptable.
It's not enough for Frontier to simply say they care about their communities, they have to show it.

This and then some.

I just can't explain to myself why a lot smaller developers are perfectly capable of releasing their games on pc and consoles and Fdev can't.
I blame it on poor management, just like the initial release of Odyssey altogether.
Cyberpunk runs great on Series X and so do all other games I have, I bet Starfield will run good too.

I bought my Series X with only two games in mind realy, Flight Simulator and Elite Dangerous Odyssey.
The pew pew part of Odyssey wasn't realy my cup of tea but the improved visuals, station interiors etc. were.

My hopes are on Starfield now, so far it looks good.
Fdev has lost all credibility in my book from here on, I'll never buy one of their products again.

They can.
Most of their games are also on XB/PS with newer ones, post mid 2021, also released on PS5/XBSeries.

However, Elite is a truly specialy ambitious game and the EDO engine was really unpolished and far from ready to launch one year ago and it's still not ready for consoles.
In hindsight, they should have postponed the release with at least 10 months if not more, and even then it would have not been ready for consoles.
