We were talking about building blocks, screens, interface and MFD. Merkir was suggesting that the screens for refueling gave zero gameplay value in SC.
Merkir may correct me if I am wrong but I do not think his comment was limited to just the "buttons" or interface part but the actual gameplay involved:

"I hope this is fun while you're actually doing it, because it looks like a complete yawn-fest.
It's like game devs have no idea what constitutes fun gameplay these days... but each to their own. 🤷‍♂️"

Ha yes, because in SC, refueling will be limited only to the buttons or interface ?
When you will be out of fuel, a magical Starfarer will pop around you and will teleport to its base once the job done, all for free and without any danger ?

Even without talking about interface, how do you negociate the price of the refueling operation in ED ? Let me guess (haven't tested it myself), you can't because no money transfert between players...

Woah! Look at this lifeless icy body #23252 I just found! Man, so much stuff to explore!!!!!
You guys really seem to enjoy reductio ad absurdum! 😋

Seriously though, saying Exploration in Elite is just watching a planet or pressing a button for hours is as narrow as saying that the king of games, chess, is just moving pieces from tile A to tile B for hours. Or that rock climbing is just moving limbs from rock A to rock B for hours. Boring! Narrow!

No, there is indeed tons of gameplay and depth in Elite's Exploration, but if that is your definition then it simply means that you just do not like most of the actual Exploration gameplay (which is fine) or that it just eludes your personal and too narrow definition.

Chess atleast requires you to think
Same in Elite explo, see above.

I can hear the mass exodus of fuel rats moving over to Star Citizen right now for it's amazing UI feature alone.

"Thanks for calling which system are you in"
"Stanton guys, it's always just...Stanton"
"..."
You are correct, refueling will be limited in Stanton. The gameplay is tailored for systems like Pyro. So no exodus before Pyro.
But when Pyro will be out, prepare indeed for a mass exodus, and not only for fuel rats if FDEV had not improved a lot EDO.

No idea man, we will have to wait and see. It was you who were reducing Elite fuel related gameplay to button presses. Looking forward to SC fuel related gameplay and refueling delivering this kind of epic player experiences.

"and flew in supercruise for 48 hours to go 65,659 light years from Sol."

If you want the same scenario in SC in 3.17 it's easy. Just fly decoupled in any direction for x hours and when you are out of fuel, call a Starfarer for help.

You clearly don't understand why Fuel Rats fuel rat
They are some guys that dedicate their playtime for free to refuel you when your fuel tank is empty and nobody want to help you because your are too far away and you don't want to destroy your ship to respawn ?
Why do you think this basic concept can't exist in SC ?

Looks like you insist in your "reductio ad absurdum" line of argumentation. I am afraid that "scenario" in Elite is quite a bit more convoluted than just click a button or fly from A to B. Fuel related gameplay and its context can get quite deep.

That particular event was captured in many gaming press outlets at the time precisely because it was indeed exciting gameplay. Here a couple interesting passages from those articles:

"So Cmdr. Persera, after making fuel calculations, turned off all the modules in her vessel (an Anaconda) and flew in supercruise for 48 hours to go 65,659 light years from Sol. Supercruise is the game’s equivalent of manual drive. So that’s 48 hours of real time spaceflight going in one direction away from the galaxy.
The problem is Cmdr. Persera blew her fuel calculations, and didn’t have enough to get back to Semotus Beacon. From there, her real options would be to self-destruct her ship — which would forfeit her progress and her record."

"Three Fuel Rats came to the rescue, in what was called Operation Beyond The Void. The plan was to get Persera enough fuel to get her to the nearest “scoopable” star (a star that her vessel can use to replenish her fuel tanks) and get home. However, they were well aware that with fuel so tight, there was a real possibility one or all of their own would become stranded instead. “A fact of life as a Fuel Rat,” said Cmdr. Highwaywarrior."

etc

You can also see the gaming press in general has captured fuel related events quite often which suggests fuel related gameplay in Elite is indeed exciting and worth of showcase, like this one too, also described in detail here. Rich and deep gameplay requiring tons of thoughtful preparation and precise execution.

As I said, I am looking forward to SC fuel related gameplay and refueling delivering this kind of epic player experiences.

Don't forget the fantastic mission explaining why Persera was 65,000 light years from Sol, two days beyond the last jump point.
The contract required only that I take a canister of mugs as far past Beagle Point as I could get and send them drifting in space directly away from Sol.

The Rescue by HighwayWarrior was watched live on Twitch by 2.5k people too

Well I guess that proves it.

The upcoming refuelling screen will be the Best Damn Refuelling Screen Ever.

Joining such fine examples as the Actually Not Very Good Inventory Screen (Which Occasionally Yeets You Through Ceilings), Those MFDs Which Are Still Awaiting Rework 4 (Please Hold), and That Star Map Which Almost Everyone Hates.

Stand not in the way of SC’s inexorable march to greatness, oh foolish mortals.
