Planet Zoo: Wetlands Animal Pack arriving 12 April

Woohoo a lechwe! Totally blindsided! Awesome choice!

Capybaras YES!

The water buffalo looks amazing! It's not a simple reskin of the african buffalo, this is something completely new. A lot of attention to detail!

I haven't seen a platypus ever, but I'm sure it looks good! An interesting animal for sure, though I wonder if this means there isn't a future oceania animal pack...? It would have been a headliner animal there.

The crane is nice, a lot of people have been clamoring for a bird and especially a crane. The ASCA is nice too, I hope it's cute!

The newt is an interesting choice! It looks funny 😋

The caiman is the only choice that's like ???
I thought our crocodilian roster was complete, another caiman is unnecessary in my opinion. But I'm sure it looks great.

Because this is a biome themed pack, do we get more foliage than usual?

As for the "other animals do this already", no they really dont. They swim in water to traverse it, but they never lay in it, or bath in shallow pools like it will be available now.
There's actually two behaviors linked to shallow water, which was added some time back in an update. Some animals purposefully spend time walking and standing in shallow water, and even fewer sleep in shallow water, as well as using shallow areas to spend time in like the other bunch. However, I agree that this was pretty two dimensional to be very noticeable. The new behaviors will definitely be very appreciated as they will increase immersion.

I'm very happy we finally have capibara. About the caiman as a South America player I'm really happy to see it comming, considering most people here can build ther country/local zoos and moust of us can't but with the caiman and capibara we are a litte bit more close. Love Asian watter buffalo and Crane, so happy to have a crane in the game, this open the gate to more cranes in the future <3 Thanks frontier for the work!
Looking for have them in my zoo!

This is sooo cool! We already know the Platypus will deep dive, and most likely the caiman and the otter will, too... Is the Capy deep diving though?

So, the roster of this pack is like this, if I recall the animals correctly:

South America - 2: Capybara and Spectacled Caiman
Oceania - 1: Platypus
Asia - 3: Asian Small Claw Otter, Red Crowned Crane and Water Buffalo
Africa - 1: Nile Lechwe
Europe -1: Danube Crested Newt

Not bad at all, I love that the pack contain animals all over the world and hope this trend will continue in future packs.

What intersperses enrichment can we expect in this pack? Personally I’d predict:
  • babirusa, tapir, orangutan, binturong, rhino and maybe some other Asian species for the otter and buffalo
  • various Asian ungulates for the crane
  • the anteater capuchin and tapir for the capybara
  • the African savannah mix for the lechwe
Can anyone think of anything else?

I'm really excited by this animal pack!

In addition to some great animals, I think that the selection shows good signs for the game overall. (Others have covered some of these while I was typing this, so apologies for duplicates):

I think the move to biomes (or return to biomes, depending on how you see the arctic and aquatic packs), is a positive move, because it makes it much easier to return to places and pick up animals that have been missed. Having multiple ways to slice the pie, so to speak.

I'm also happy to see the wetlands be the first biome (or first of the returns to biomes), since it makes it almost certain that we'll see more expected biomes like rainforests or deserts in the future.

The mix of highly requested and lesser known animals is also something that I see as a positive sign. It suggests that Frontier is leaving open the possibility for a much longer life span of the game than if they were "rushing" to hit all the meta-list animals as quickly as possible. If we want a long lifespan (which most of us on the forums do), then we've gotta leave some of the most requested ones to make sure that the next few years(!) of dlcs sell well too. Not just jam them all into one pack.

I also remember that in some past packs, the animals that folks were least excited about at announcement turned out to be among their favorites once we saw them in the game. And the connections with water suggest to me that they might each have very different habits and movements. (The picture of the platypus, for example, looks like it's underwater swimming, which will presumably be true of the caimans and otters too, while our capybaras get the bathing feature).

I'm also interested to see how the wetland nature of each animal matches up with the various biomes that currently exist in-game. I usually open a new zoo in anticipation of each dlc, so that I'm ready to place them as soon as they go live. So I am going to have to do some research to decide which in-game biome is most likely to meet the needs of most of these animals.

I know otters are held with orangutans (Gelsenkirchen) and binturongs (Heidelberg), and I think even with Indian Rhinos somewhere, although I can't remember right now where it was. But I'm not entirely sure whether we'll actually get those interspecies enrichment bonuses.

Capybara might also get llama. Lechwe will definitely enrich with all the other African savannah animals. The platypus will probably get nothing, I assume.

I think all the animals go great with the theme of the dlc. Also about the meta list I definitely get some of the disappointment of not getting someone’s most anticipated animals in game but personally I’m kind of glad frontier doesn’t follow it to a tee. I like surprise picks like the lechwe and water buffalo. A pelican would have been great but I’m very happy with the crane.

I'm super happy to see PZ getting more new content, and I'll be buying the pack when it comes out.

However I have to say this isn't my favourite of the DLCs. There are some good solid picks in here - I like the capybara, the platypus, and particularly the crane - however, all the other packs had a "star" animal that I was really excited for, and for me personally, this pack doesn't have that. I know lots of people are really excited for the capybara, and that's great. I'll be happy to get them. They're just not one of my top picks.

I do like the change to a biome pack though, might be fun to see what comes next. Jungle? Forest? Desert? Mountains?

I love ungulates and am really glad to have another one to choose from. The Nile Lechwe looks gorgeous in real life (we can't judge the in-game model yet, of course), coupled with a conservation message. So I like this pick a lot as well, and I can assure I'm not paid by Frontier to say this, as much as I would appreciate those easy-earned additional dollars in my account. ;)
Yeah I had no idea this animal existed and now I do, so that's something.

I posted before saying I loved this pack, now I'm gonna say why haha

Capybara - it's a giant guinea pig. Literal friend. Love them. Also they're at my local zoo and I love watching them lazing around with the mara and agouti in a huge walk in enclosure.

Platypus - we have so few animals from Australia (still holding out hope for a Tasmanian devil!), this is a great addition to the roster.

Asian Small Clawed Otter - probably the otter I've seen most in zoos, and a must have. Although saying that, my local zoo doesn't have them - it has the smooth coat and the giant otter instead. Still it's nice to get a small otter and I'm looking forward to seeing these guys in the water!

Spectacled Caiman - gotta say this is the let down of the pack for me, but I've never been overly keen on crocodilians - I've never actually been to any zoo that keeps them. I'd have preferred a pere david's deer or another type of bird.

Water Buffalo (Wild) - A surprise for me! Gotta say I love it though, and personally don't mind getting the wild version instead of the domestic, even if the wild one isn't found in zoos normally. Maybe that's because I really want Ethiopian wolves and they're also not found in captivity anywhere haha

Red-Crowned Cane - the biggest surprise of the pack in my opinion! Cranes are beautiful birds, and I'm very curious to see how this one turns out. Perhaps it means we'll be getting more birds in the future, too?

Nile Lechwe - yes yes yes, thank you! Another animal I love seeing at the local zoo, they're absolutely gorgeous and I can't wait to see how they look in the game. It's also an endangered species, and I love having more endangered animals in the game.

And finally, Danube Crested Newt - I don't really have an opinion on this. I don't use exhibit animals very often, except to fill in a blank space, but the newt is an interesting looking animal and

So, just a theory...meta-wishlist isn't their only source of figuring out what people want in the game. Mods are too. The lechwe is in the safari mod pack, the Asian water buffalo and spectacled caiman are early mods and all 3 of those mods has at least 5k downloads. And obviously the capybara and platypus mods are even higher in popularity, but those were also highly voted on. And the otter was highly voted on. And any bird they gave us would've been popular too. Now everything makes sense.
