Community Event / Creation The Buckyball Racing Club presents: The Wiccan BeWare Race (Magic 8-Ball Championship, Race 3)

I was on track to break 20 min in regulation when this happened...

Which I didn't notice until this happened...

Oh well. Here are some explosions.
I saw this bug 3 times this race, first time I see it since the "A Halpy Hand" race, once when buying, twice when selling.
Can not be bothered putting it in the issue tracker though, it being very hard to replicate and the original issue there seemingly having disappeared completely (at least I'm not able to find it).

Well, real life interfered in the form of a water leak from the upstairs apartment. I got some runs in this afternoon, but only 1 finish and it didn't improve my time (Can you get out of practice in 3 days? )

Thanks to @Fish172 for hosting an excellent race - unexpectedly tricky and frustrating - but a lot of fun. My wife has learnt more new swear words again, so she says thanks to Buckyball Racing.

I'll try and post a compilation of my best explosions in the next day or so.

Ok the race is officially closed and the entry form will be closing a little later today. There were a few more entries last night and I need to finalize everything. What a race!

What a brilliant race this has been! While we await the finalt results I just wanted to thank @Fish172 for taking this on. I'm sure Sulu will tell us more but this has been something of a record breaker in terms of the amount of interest and number of submissions we've had and it's no small feet to be responsible for checking all that and keeping us updated with regular scoreboards. You've done a fantastic job sir!

I'm currently working on two videos for the race: a annotated Cobra run where I try to explain (in captions) everything that I'm doing to try and shave off the seconds (hopefully as something of a Buckyball tutorial, too late for this race, but hopefully helpful in the future for those who are just getting into this and want to know how to go a bit faster ... although how to go as fast at the top 3 or 4? no idea 🤷‍♂️ , it must be down to "skill" or some other such nonsense ); and a compilation of all the explosions from everyone's blooper reels. I'll probably wait a bit longer for the latter in case anyone else has more to share and try to put it together tomorrow.

The next race (a reboot of 3304's "On The Rocks") runs from the 7th to the 15th May and is being organised by @psykit.

Can a type-10 have a fighter bay? I had considered doing a slightly rule bending run where I'd go through the tunnel even if most of my ship didn't.

I was toying with the idea of submitting the Vette run using the SLF, then noticed the SLF had shields on.
Which then got me wondering, could you even do a run without the shields on the SLF being on since you can't remove the module.

Does anyone know, if you turn a module off on the SLF then dock it with your ship does it reset the module states when you next deploy it?

First of all, I’d like to @Fish172 for hosting this brilliant race. Really wish I’d had made more time to devote to it early in the week.

Because, of course, real life decided to give me a nasty little virus, which was thankfully not Covid-19, which sapped my strength to do pretty much nothing but stay in bed and try to sleep. :( And catch up on my streaming queues. ;) Finally feeling well enough to get out of bed this morning, but I have a feeling this cough is going to linger for some time.

The Wiccan BeWare race 3308

Finally, the race is over folks.

It has been said that insurance costs in the local area have suddenly halved and the used spare parts market has tripled overnight. The local scrap dealers also seem to have a very large stock at the moment. I wonder why?

The race, a light hearted tip of the hat to the original Wiccan Ware Race has been hilarious to watch. Commanders from all over the place have “dropped in” laid down a time and then thought about it and came back for more. At times it was starting to resemble an episode of that classic cartoon “Wacky Races”.

It has been such a large field of entrants that it would be difficult to single out many individual commanders. In fact, there have been in excess of 100 submissions!
In that light however we must mention the winners in both categories! They really are talented racers and the times they achieved show that perfectly. In regulation we must congratulate Cmdr Bruski, Cmd Sgurr and Cmdr Shaye Blackwood. In unlimited we must congratulate Cmdr Shaye Blackwood, Cmdr Bruski and Captain-MD. There does seem to be a pattern there doesn`t there? Well done all!

I would also like to genuinely thank the tons of pilots who came along, it feels like everyone came, had some fun, and took part in this race. I am honestly overwhelmed with the response. A big thank you to you all!

The Buckyball Racing Club is holding races virtually every month this year and we would love you all to come along to have some more madcap fun, the next one starting on the 7th May is “On The Rocks” by Psykit. Be there!

Remember, anyone who raced and is part of the Magic 8 Ball Championships will also get a minimum of 1 point added to their scores.

Finally, I would like to add a note of thanks to those who helped me set up what was in fact my first ever race. (and boy did I have to work for it) In particular I would like to thank Alec Turner, as I have been a pain in his side while doing this and could not have done it without his support. I would also like to add a personal thank you to Commander Sgurr for the initial testing and prepping. A big thanks as well to the rest of you who have supported me, especially when I made a couple of silly mistakes (of which I unreservedly apologise). It was a comfort to know help was at hand to dig me out if needed.

Hope everyone had fun!

See you at the next one!

I am going to have a sleep now.

Hey Mr. Turner, congrats to a splendid performance. I am still puzzled and amazed how fast one can apparently fly in ED. Having just participated for the first time, I would very much appreciate some kind of tutorial video (and maybe Mr. Dfire would also benefit from it ;) ) Best regards.

This was your first?? Bloody well done in that case! (y)

So here are all the occasions when some evil piece of starport vindictively jumped out in front of (and in one case behind) my poor innocent spaceship. Mr Turner you are of course free to use any of them in your forthcoming Greatest Hits (see what I did there?) compilation. :)

Thanks to everyone for a great race, and see you all next month. I'm now off in search of some unsuspecting pirates to blow up.

OK, here you go - as promised a fully annotated video of my best regulation Cobra run presented as something of a general guide to Buckyball Racing.

Hope folks find it useful.
