Elite Dangerous Livestreams - 28.04.2022

While I appreciate some reactions to the OP may seem extreme here's how it feels from this side (to some at least).

Imagine you're in a failing relationship and have agreed a "date night" every Thursday to try and keep it alive.
One Thursday morning without warning they casually say:
"I can't make this week, I'll let you know in the future when we can do this again."
Then they leave the room.
Queue much screaming, crying, throwing things and Depp-esque slamming of cabinet doors.
Then they stick their head back through the door and add:
"don't lose your blob - I said I'll let you know and I meant it"

🤷‍♂️
haha, look, whichever way the chips fall, Elite is a game. This isn't about white knights vs doomers, it's just taking a neutral position rather than getting into Mystic Meg meets Eastenders territory.

Unfortunately, people are going to think whatever they are going to think. It's unlikely my explanation will change your mind in any manner whatsoever. We are also going way off-topic here, but seeing as you are diving further into the data - let me give you some context.

The best type of video a YouTuber wants - are "evergreen" videos. These are videos that make views month on month, year on year.
The second best type of video are viral videos (like the MSFS volcano video you mentioned)
The third best type is not about views, but about whether the video generates new subscribers (it's more important to build audience, then it is to build views)
The forth best type is to generate long-term interest in a particular series of videos (this requires a topic that has long term interest with a subject that has a long term future).
The fifth best type of video is to generate good engagement via comments
The sixth best type is to generate a lot of views on any random subject

Different YouTuber's will see it in a different way.

From the 1st of January 2022 to 28th April, my channel has generated 5.4 million views. This comes from a combination of the above video types I mentioned. Generally speaking the higher up the list the video is, the more long term views it will generate.

Elite does okay for my channel (more than ok), but the bulk of those 5.4 million views do not come from new Elite videos, they come from older Elite videos, and videos on other games. The "clickbait" Elite titles which seem to bother people account for a very small percentage of this over all number.

In my top 20 videos of all time, Elite features just 3 times - and not even near the top.

If I chase a specific type of video, it is these ones (in the image).

A "clickbait" video that generates 100k views over the course of 5 or 10 days, is neither here nor there and from my perspective is small fry.

As I have said before - if I run my channel on YouTube Clickbait (as some people incorrectly believe), then I would be making far more controversial videos than I currently do. MSFS, Star Citizen and No Man's Sky generate far better controversial titles, and views than Elite. But creating controversy isn't what I'm interested in. If Frontier make stupid mistakes, then I will talk about those stupid mistakes. If Microsoft, Asobo, Hello Games and CCP make stupid mistakes, then I will talk about them too (just like the recent EVE video).

The fact Frontier seem to make more mistakes than all the others combined is certainly a factor in why there are more "negative" Elite videos than there are for other games. :)

EDIT: And just because you got me curious - I just dug into the stats. New Elite videos have generated 835,541 views between 1st January and 28th April (out of a total of 5,400,000 in the same period). So, it accounts for an even smaller percentage of my total views from the same period than I had realised.

Probably his view of the community.
I am afraid that does not really seem to accurately reflect the reality of your channel. As of April 22 and looking back from that date here is the result for the videos marked as 4 months or less by youtube at that date. There has been just 3 new videos published since then, and views may have changed in the last week obviously, but all in all I would say the below should still be pretty accurate.

There is an extreme view outlier video there for the one about a volcano in MSFS where you had got 594k views apparently. I have taken the figures with and without the top outliers of each game for comparison. Note in both cases Elite seems to be on top of MSFS for views, especially if we don’t count extreme outliers where Elite would double MSFS views.

Views in thousands.

The channel has diversified well but Elite indeed still seems to be among the top topic sources for views (and therefore the “doom” title click baiting, such as "Elite Dangerous a sinking ship?" etc probably playing a significant role). Just remember that these figures are only a 4 months snap shot at April 22nd. Things were probably different in the past and can still change a lot in the future.
Did you even read your own chart?

OA said Elite accounts for 1/4 of his views, or 25%. The man is right and that chart shows it. Add all those total views up and subtract the Elite views:

Total combined views: 5284

25% (1/4) of that figure: 1321

Total Elite views: 1332

Pretty much spot on with a tiny margin of error.

Hello community. Like many of you I have thousands of hours of Elite. I never remember seeing the game so close to its end. The only thing I would like to see clarified is, are we at a turning point or is FDev gradually leaving ED?

Communication is erratic! Today FDev have great news, tomorrow FDev cancel the Livestreams and all communication. Today FDev bet on Odyssey, tomorrow cancel its development. What is up? I've seen games disappear but the cycles are noticeable.
Right now the confusion is huge and no one really understands where the game is going. To me, that's the worst thing you can do to a community.

Thanks for the notice, Bruce, and best wishes to you hardworking CMs and devs, please stay healthy during these times of stress and frustration.

It's unfortunate that the Top Brass once again show they are unwilling to learn from past mistakes regarding their management of their live service game Elite Dangerous. A company that's been overstretched for many years, blindly chasing growth at the expense of stability, with its staff and products suffering as a result.

Those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.

🤷‍♂️
I don't know, it's been pointed out that they have a major release upcoming, if that's the reason then is it that unreasonable that they're pulling resources away to focus on something that will help bring in a substantial amount of revenue? We're all aware of the upset going on in the games industry as a whole from trying to get back to normal from COVID. I wish Frontier the best, and don't stress. If it's doom we will know at some point, but the whole dogpiling on this announcement isn't going to help either.

You just have to read the last investor blurb to know that they still intend to do "something" .. if not they have been misleading investors:

Elite Dangerous experienced a difficult calendar 2021 following the disappointing launch of the major Odyssey expansion in May 2021. We continue to support the game and our passionate players with development updates, and we have seen an upturn in player sentiment as a result

An extra few words like, "Don't worry folks, Frontier is still committed to the future Elite Dangerous!" would have gone a long way to diffuse at least some of the doom prophecies in this thread. You can never over-communicate when it comes to reassuring your player base regarding the future well-being of your product.
David Braben has said twice in recent times he's committed to the future of Elite Dangerous. If we're getting into relationship analogies all of the earnest consternation is coming off a bit like this:

Let me take that a step further and just simply say "no meaningful community interaction at all."

Remember back in the days of Educating Ed? Remember when CM's would routinely post in threads and interact with the community? I realize that at some point "the glory days" will always go away but my goodness is the contrast stark.
With the notable exception of Sally.

We'll find out soon enough wrt the future of ED: FDev's FY ends soon and if they plan to kill it off, that would have to be notified to the markets as it would affect the share price.

Unlike saying a PowerPlay update is slated for this year, which some people insist on using as an excuse for poor player communications.

As they still announced the livestream on Monday in their Discovery Scanner summary and today suddenly cannot even say anymore when or better if the streams will (ever) continue, the message is clear. Maybe FY2022 numbers have been rounded up and decisions have been made. Sad day.

But then, the good thing is the console players have no reason to be envious any more! (y)

O7,

No apologies needed!

The post was worded carefully and precisely. We don't know when the streams will continue. When we do, we'll post to let everyone know.
Wow!!
That's not good to hear!
What the hell is going on inside Frontier, as far as ED is concerned..........
.........just hope the server's are still online when I return from my trip to Xibalba:(

I think it's more down to "Right everyone, we need to focus on the Warhammer release next week, and the F1 Manager release in the summer, so lets not bother with the Elite livestreams since there's nothing going on there until those are done anyways"

Also, weren't they trying to hire another CM specifically for Elite Dangerous recently? Wonder how that's going.
