Console Profile Transfers and 2022 Updates

“major feature overhaul for 2023”. If FDev and the community team have learned anything from the last 12 months it should be to not keep the players in the dark and as a result, disappoint. Instead, involve the community in shaping the future and listen to their ideas for the overhaul. Being far too inward looking and listening to internal project leads has led to where we are today. Time to trust that the community actually know best!
Except in my experience the community doesn't know best. This is because the community is too diverse. What you might like, I won't etc. Particularly as we'll all have different opinions on what features should be added and their prioritisation. I wouldn't trust this or any game community as far as I could throw it when it comes to game development. There are some individuals I would trust, but not communities writ large. It would invite management by committee which is a recipe for disaster. I might not always agree with FDEV's priorities myself, but I'd prefer they run the development than the community.

I do not trust the community after some of the ideas they have come out with.

At least there is some sort of update. People will have to decide if they are satisfied with what has been shared. At least there's a plan for console transfers but predictably, weeks later all we get is outline if a plan and no timeline. The quarterly updates are pretty sparse on info and what's the point of even mention "major feature rework" if you won't even discuss what it is. Clearly you know what it is at this point, what's the harm in sharing it? I just don't get the thinking from FD, even when they try to communicate it still comes off all weird and unsatisfying.
Agreed. So much empty. Can't get excited about "We're doing stuff with things"
Down to Earth Astronomy's take on it is pretty grim. He's usually pretty positive.
YouTube. Check it out. I won't post because some people get in a tizzy about posting videos. I love Elite. I'll play until they pull the plug on the servers, but FD needs to attend a class on How to communicate to their customers properly.

I spend on financial support, its called Arx.
Same here. I have $40 reserved for my main account, which has the LEP I got along with the original Alpha. I haven't bought any ARX post-Odyssey yet, because it still isn't in the state I expected it to be on release, but today's news on about console transfers deserves a little reward, and I've had my eye on the holographic dashboard letters for a long time.

I'm just going to point out that Arthur mentioned on stream that this overview is so people can get an idea of when to expect to hear more details about the updates on this "roadmap." So, tune in closer to the end of May. Tune in again in August and then again in November, and expect some details in early 2023 on the overhaul. Like, honestly, this suits me fine. I don't need to know every single detail months in advance, I just like to know that the game is being worked on.

Yeah well, some people bought a copy of the game and some cosmetics, so know they think they should have a place in the management meetings. What can you do? 🤷‍♂️

So... about that little side-dish in the announcement...

I feel too many "programmes" I have been listening to have turned to long form, as it is, leaving me strained with more hours of stuff to listen to every week, than there are hours in a week :p, but were it to turn out those developer guest they mentioned were to come over to share interesting tech- and creative insights, rather than just visiting to play the game together with the community managers, then that is something I would absolutely find compelling long-form content.

If I was a console commander, I'd would be questioning my desire to return after taking a look at that roadmap...

As a PC commander, the road map is disappointing to say the least, as there will be no appreciable content released until early 2023 (the nature of which is mostly unknown). This feels like 2019 all over again, this time without the promise of a "new era" or giant expansion on the horizon.

While the game is not dead, it doesn't seem alive either, and it seems like it can go either way here. I can only hope that the narrative aspect of the rest of the year can keep the player base interested.

I will be popping back into the game from time to time to see what's what.
You shouldn't play any game based on a roadmap, play it if you enjoy it now, if you don't enjoy it play something else. If it gets better later, come back later. This isn't a 'if you don't like it shut up and leave' comment, it's 'don't let habit supplant happiness'

You're sure of that? because the text written is a bit ambiguous, "Cosmetic items applied through the Livery (ships and Fleet Carriers) and Holo-Me will remain applied." that just sounds to me like the livery already on my ships wont suddenly disappear, not that your library will be there. That's why I want some confirmation.
During the stream it was suggested by chat that the ARX balance could be 'transfered' by spending it before the transfer, so the value came over with the purchased items. Bruce picked up on that and both he and Arf agreed that it was a good idea and suggested it should be part of the official communication (along with clarification that there's no obligation to do so, you still have your console account and can still use the ARX there if you continue to play there) that to me is a clear indication that all cosmetics are transferred.

Does this console to pc transfer also include a pc that can run Odyssey?
For console players who own a capable pc already this transfer looks pretty okay, for those don't or can't afford a new pc there is no good news at all.
No way you look at it, console players were screwed over imho.

With this roadmap as presented I see no reason at all to purchase a new pc.
Frontier's incompetence in managment has taken all trust I had in them, no way I'm gonna invest again in one of their products.
That doesn't sound very fair. Base game players who didn't have the hardware to render planet surfaces didn't get new computers or components gifted to them? How about pc players who couldn't (or still can't) run Odyssey? Shouldn't they get PC upgrades included too?
If instead of cancelling console development entirely, they had announced it would be next gen only, would you expect next gen consoles to be handed out for free as well?

You bought Horizons, you can still play Horizons. If you WANT to play Odyssey the system requirements are higher and you will need better hardware than you did before. This transfer just gives you that option.

Greetings Commanders,

We’d like to thank you all for your patience whilst we’ve been working on our communications and development plans for the remainder of the year.

Following the launch of Odyssey, our primary focus has been on performance, optimisation and bug fixing, along with adding more features. This focus has had a knock-on effect with regards to our plans for this year and beyond and delayed our communications.

We understand the concern and frustration this has caused and hope this post goes some way to alleviate those feelings. Below we discuss profile transfers for console players and give an overview of the updates coming before the end of 2022.

Console Profile Transfers

We can now confirm that players will be able to copy their profiles from console to PC in light of Odyssey’s cancellation on Xbox and PlayStation. This process will be time limited and optional. We will provide a date for this process once it is confirmed.

The original profile will remain playable on console and the new PC profile will be a copy. Only one profile may be copied over per copy of the game. Please also be aware that this will be a one-time only process.

Elements that will be copied
  • Ships, Holo-Me, weapons, SRVs and SLFs
    • Including Cobra Mk IV if owned
  • Core progression (this includes…)
    • Inventory
    • Reputation
    • Navy Ranks
    • Permits
    • Codex Discoveries
    • Engineering progress
    • Guardian Tech Broker progress
  • NPC Crew progress
  • Cosmetics*
*Cosmetic items applied through the Livery (ships and Fleet Carriers) and Holo-Me will remain applied.

Elements that won’t be copied
  • Commander name*
  • ARX Balance**
  • Squadron membership
  • Friends lists, Block lists and Private Groups
  • Current mission progress
  • NPC Crew names and appearances

*The process will require a new name to be chosen if the original name is not available on PC.

**ARX balances cannot be transferred. We recommend that anyone who submits their account for the transfer process purchases any desired cosmetics beforehand. Any unspent ARX post-transfer will remain available on the original console profile.

Fleet Carriers and their contents

Fleet Carrier ownership cannot be transferred from one Commander to another. To players that wish to own a Fleet Carrier post-transfer we would advise the following:
  1. Decommission your Fleet Carrier ahead of the transfer
  2. Wait for the decommissioning to complete (two weeks).
  3. Check that credits from the decommissioning have been returned.
  4. Complete the profile transfer process
  5. Re-purchase a Fleet Carrier on PC
Precise dates for the opening and close of this process will be announced closer to the time.

Roadmap

Here we present our top-level roadmap for the remainder of 2022. Our three focuses before the year ends are launching the next phase of the narrative, stability and optimisation. We’ll release three more updates to support these.

Within the narrative, human space balances on the precipice as tension mounts within the bubble. The Azimuth Saga will conclude in a grand finale event, the consequences of which will mark the beginning of the next stage of the Elite story in Update 14.

Meanwhile, updates 12 and 13 will largely focus on quality-of-life changes, stability and optimisation. Work has also begun on a major feature overhaul for 2023 that we’ll discuss later in the year.

Please note that the details and timings of each release are subject to change and that any adjustments will be shared ahead of time. Beyond this we are also discussing additional game content, and we’ll reveal it once confirmed.

Development Updates and Streams

Following the launch of Odyssey in 2021, we started publishing monthly development posts to share our progress on subsequent updates. In light of the remaining updates for 2022 being confirmed above, these will not continue. However, we will still provide detailed patch notes, information, and other relevant details around updates and hotfixes as they are released between each development post.

Regular streams from the Community team have returned. Going forwards, these will be fortnightly on Thursdays at 16:00-18:00 GMT. This additional time between streams will allow us to put on longer shows and take full advantage of the in-office studio. Frameshift Live has only just started and we have many exciting ideas to explore in the future! If you have not been watching, these streams now feature new and exclusive Twitch Drops that can be earned simply by watching.

We will also be launching our Partnership Programme later this year, offering content creators their own exclusive Twitch drops their communities can earn by watching them. More on this in the coming months!

We hope this post clarifies our continued support and plans for Elite. As always, we thank you for your feedback and support.

So... Elite is not dead and there are many new content coming.

OH yeah... Haters gonna HATE!
😁

Good news for the console people. Well, those who can/want to switch to PC anyway. It's a bit odd that we had to wait months for an announcement about the data transfer system - for most companies this is pretty basic stuff that can be whipped up in a week or less. But at least we know it's coming.
But that's pretty much it. The rest of the "roadmap" is the standard "lots of fixes and optimisations" which have been going on for a year now with debatable and slow results.
Knowing FDev, and as is often recommended here on the forums, it's best to expect an MVP for anything including this roadmap to not get our hopes up. That'll mean there'll be some low-hanging-fruit bug fixes and the story content will be GCs and Galnet articles.

That said, "major story content" sounds like something more than that - or maybe it'll just mean the GalNet articles will be more epic. Who knows, but it doesn't make sense to make any assumptions beyond that. It wouldn't be the first time FDev tries to promise something big and hype things up without actually delivering anything but what can technically pass their promises. I'm assuming this is why the roadmap is so vague - otherwise they would commit to delivering something they're not sure they can.
I've thought they're working with a skeleton crew for a while now - it looked that a year ago and it's looking like that even more this year. At least we can now claim the game is not dead because something will be done to it in the future.

Of course I'd be happy to be proven wrong and see something much better this time around. Would love to pick up Elite again - but I'm pretty good at recognizing patterns and it's unlikely this will change the direction that the ship has been sailing for quite a while now. It's a shame, and I understand it doesn't make sense from a business perspective to have a full 100 people strong team working on a product that doesn't pay their salaries - but it's not fair to drag the players down with a sinking ship.
