Discovery Scanner [Weekly Update] - 09/05/2022

More likely to be something like networking than redoing something they recently spent 3 years doing and are still optimising. Actually networking has quite a good shot, there was a lot of surprise that networking / instancing wasn’t enhanced for odyssey.
I just think it's a thing that would require re-booting the galaxy to do again, and they might think it's worth it.

Of course they would, even though they recently said they wouldn't.

I admit to being encouraged by the repeated assurances that Elite is not being shelved by Frontier. The release of the recent "roadmap" made me suspicious because it just looked like placeholder busywork. But posts like this are doubling-down on that roadmap, which lends it more credibility. This could still be smoke and mirrors - releasing Odyssey in such a poor state will forever dent Frontier's credibility in my book - but maybe the game will soldier on, which would be good thing. Honestly, at this point just fixing the borked anti-aliasing which is ruining the celestial vistas would go a long way in making me more enthusiastic for Odyssey.

Zac, my friend...thanks for your efforts. This does not at all allay my concerns, however relatively muted those concerns have even become at this point due to the state of everything at this point.

Good luck to the project no matter what, but please stop attempting to normalize an "emperor has no clothes" frame on the truth of the shift in output, communication and experiential quality between the period led by Ed, Sandro and Michael Brookes and today.

That shift has been real, and really unaddressed. What does "looking at a key feature overhaul" even mean? Please realize that this is in fact seen as the corpo-brand-nothingspeak that Frontier has committed to more fervently than anything regarding the Elite franchise, and that we do see that the Emperor is naked.

Again, let's hold a couple of ideas in our minds at the same time; good luck regarding continued substantive development of the project, and this communication is entirely lacking as has been proper development of the game over the past few years.

Frontier lost all credibility and goodwill when Odyssey was released and have done nowhere near enough to redeem themselves, yet they're still asking us to have faith.

The best way forward for all CMDRs is not to hype these empty statements from Fdev up, but to expect absolutely nothing of substance to happen. That way if it turns out to be more of the same you lose nothing and if by some miracle something substantial comes along then its a pleasant surprise.

Thanks for the post Zac.

The POWER MOVE you guys pulled a couple of weeks back, forcing the suits at F Dev into a corner was very impressive indeed. Finally, you have been allowed to do your job, open up (just a little bit) and engage with the community directly on plans for the year ahead. Well done to you all!

I'd like the key feature overhaul to be about the space ships. Ship interiors to be precise and more ships. You know, with Elite supposed to be all about space ships and all that - imagine that. This was a key feature that was to being designed in from the ground up according to David Braben at kick starter. Lest we forget.

Except some other developers have already beaten them to it and done rather a good job too. But if I were FDev I wouldn't want said developers to get away with it so easy and I'd have to give them a run for their money.

Thank you and good day.

Sorry, but what would "Ship interiors" bring to the game? You can go for a coffee or a crap in space. Yay. Use the interior of the ship a couple of times and you'll get bored of it and want it back to straight gameplay (which is, after all, what this is).

I would much rather effort went into fixing how Engineering works. Fixing how ranks and rank rewards work. Having the galaxy evolve like a real civilisation with corporations bringing out new ships occasionally with ever-evolving tech features and improvements to function and form. Ever-changing mission types and mission content. Improving AI with NPCs actually seeming to be intelligent instead of the current nonsensical dumbasses. (Pouncing on a miner just as he arrives, empty, to start mining? Really??!)

Improving weapons and modules but with irritating limitations... the list goes on. Maybe Zorgon Peterson bring out a new FdL with all the lines centralised or something I dunno.

But ship interiors? MEH to the max. What would you DO with it?

What does engineering bring to the game? A long grind that unbalances the capabilities of each commander’s ship. It wasn’t part of the plan at KickStarter and should have stayed that way.

See, it’s easy to trash bits of the game if you don’t take other’s preferences into account.

They did come from FDev. Everything I'm saying has been said by FDev. Publicly. They said it on the livestream they announced console transfers on. They said it here too.

These are not "interesting thoughts", they are the expectations FDev has set in their public announcements about the upcoming console transfers. They specifically said that the console transfer is to a new account and will not affect or merge with any existing PC accounts. They said that on the livestream.

There are a few unanswered questions (for the moment) that can have answers easily inferred if you listen to what has been confirmed. I.e., if it's a new account, and new accounts require a unique email address attached to them, you probably will need to have a different email registered to the transfer account than you have on an existing PC account. Because obvious. If you do not have a secondary email account, setting up a secondary that forwards to your primary is not difficult.

FDev is not the best at communication, but you will have more information to work with if you actually listen to what they say instead of assuming they're lying to you at all times.
You are then totally mistaken as Fdev never spoke about player having already console and pc account what will happen. They said new account will not merge but never mentioned that they will not affect or overwrite existing pc accounts. So again, those are just interesting thoughts.

I like the concept of engineering but as with many parts of this game it's poorly executed. Your rebuttal is so far wide of answering my question it's almost ad hominem.

I genuinely think that (like Carrier Interiors before them - thanks @Northpin ) nobody will care about ship interiors within a week of them appearing. It would not (could not) add anything to the playing of the game; it would be cosmetic fluff. This game cannot be fixed (for everyone) by adding cosmetic fluff. It needs deeper work.
