Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

Let’s ignore the fact that PES probably should have been built from the word “go” before Star Citizen was anything more than a few landing areas. I don’t doubt that making genuine persistence in the game as it stands right now is a lot of hard work, but then again CIG worked themselves into a corner. The game engine they are using is so onerous that they have had to adjust practically every aspect of it to work even close to the way they want to, so pushing these highly customized pieces, built with a level of minutia that borders on the ridiculous, into a system that remembers all of those details, can very likely only end in tears.

<snip>...95% of the people who will ever buy this interactive movie tripe have already paid for the completed product and subsequently own it. Where's the financial return going to be on all this increased spending the idiot Roberts is chucking at this act of sheer hubris when he's wilfully neglecting the active part of the project that's been paying his entire companies wages since 2012?

As backers of the space game project...as most of us are, we're actually and wilfully funding Roberts' business career aspirations...not funding the game we all want. The man is little more than a complete wastrel, imagining he's somehow transformed himself into James Cameron... all with the massive input of other people's money but still producing not one single, workable product to justify any of it. </snip>
Good point, well made. It does make me wonder why external investors would invest, how do they profit from this? As we have seen they get their dividends, but this is nowhere close to the magnitude of their investment.

If Agent's leaks are in the right ballpark, SQ42 was presented to the investors as much closer to release than it actually is. That would likely have played into their plans for shorter-term returns.

More fool them if so ;)

(It's hard to tell what's really going on though. Maybe they're taking a cut of sales already in an undisclosed form, and just want to get in on the perpetual whale fracking format? Maybe they're hoping to pivot the company into a publishing house or media entity for other ends [broadening their media empire etc]? Who knows ¯\(ツ)/¯ )

While reading Letter from the Chairman Year in Review, I was immediately reminded of one of Asimov's well known passages from The Foundation:

“That,” replied Hardin, “is the interesting thing. The analysis was the most difficult of the three by all odds. When Houk, after two days of steady work, succeeded in eliminating meaningless statements, vague gibberish, useless qualifications—in short all the goo and dribble—he found he had nothing left. Everything canceled out. Lord Dorwin, gentlemen, in five days of discussion didn't say one damned thing, and said it so that you never noticed. There are the assurances you had from your precious Empire.”

What nonsense! Drew is currently thoroughly enjoying the game on twitch, it's groundbreaking stuff, what bugs ...

Oh. It's crashed. He flew for a while to meet up with people at Orison(?) arrived and then game crashed. Now he's back where he started.
Member of Drew's chat picked him up. Now can't refuel. Another chat member is suggesting he can pick the two of them up.

This is all fine.
They're trying to get the opening (?) and only have 12 mins. Is this the ship event?

They are both going to get picked up by a third player ...

Checked in on this. The first disaster wasn't actually a server crash, just a fancy bug...

(Drew reckons he's been killed more by navigation bugs than anything else. And was very sad to lose the jacket he was going to sport around Invictus ;))

The whole bizarre escapade was like keystone cops though yeah ;). Just a very low octane version, where the cops concentrated on buying replacement uniforms...

There were no real disasters once he finally made it to Invictus (about 1h30m after he set out...), but it was pretty amusing how the frisson of potential death and set backs was ever-present. (He was convinced at one point he'd been teleported to a cloudy death while examining a statue, but it was just a camera glitch ;))

There was a fun overview in there of Drew's playstyle though:

You see the dichotomy here? One the one hand, yes, its pre-alpha, after 10 years and 500 million. On the other hand, its sold as a live service game, that's "playable now". CR has talked about it as thought its a released product for years.

When the game is being praised its the best game ever, and people should buy it and enjoy it.

When the game is being criticized all of a sudden ITS ALPHA and you shouldn't complain about the bugs.

It simply cannot be both at once.
I have to admit, these are good points.

I'm always excited about the next Free Fly until it actually gets here, and then I never seem to be able to pull the trigger. I wonder if my subconscious is trying to tell me something..

I still might try the free fly later in the week, just to see how performance is. No promises though. When is the last day?

Said it for a long time. Its a good game for those who want Second Life in space.

An alternate view of Invictus...

(I believe the NPCs are trying to surrender to the Hercules, rather than worshipping it ;))

Name one other game where a spaceship can glitch through a station and the NPCs will start worshiping it! You can't! Never been done before!

That FPS though.... ouch.

I remember being on an SX when my friends all had DXs.... i was not a happy puppy.

Yeah I skipped the SX's altogether and went for DX's while some friends went the cheaper option, but then I always spent more on my PC's than I should have, first of anyone I know who had a CD drive, a Creative Labs model.....nearly $1000, and the first to have a 3d gaming card, a Diamond Monster 3D with pass through from my 2d card, lol what fun days they were!

The colored lights in Quake were Awesome!

But I don't think I ever saw frame rates that low on anything!
