Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

Ugh.
My quest for Federation reputation missions for rank without data courier grinding has gone downhill in the latest system I'm based in. It's all planet scans for 5 rep+, so I'm just grinding those instead of data courier missions now. They require a trip to IF after each batch of 8 to 10 I do.
Things have changed since I was last in Ceos and Sothis. Only one Federation faction there, so data courier missions for Fed rank no longer work here. The alternative Chakpa and Ochosi are in the wrong state to generate courier missions right now. I guess its back to planet scan missions in the systems I was in before...

Ooph. The Ceos/Sothis runs were my go-to for that rank. That sucks a little.

Best option I can see is, pick a system with 3 Federation factions, check it's got a load of planet scan missions and move on until you find one that does. Do the missions and collect 5 rep per planet scan plus a bunch of encoded materials from the scan. It's quicker in Odyssey as the Artificial Structure is a known fixed location once the nav beacon is scanned. In Horizons you're chasing a moving target as you approach the "Search Zone". There's usually some Megaship datalink scan and blackbox retrieval missions for 4 or 5 rep in the mix too.
I've done so many planet scans I've had to visit encoded materials trader twice to trade out the materials - similar to what is at Jameson's Crashed Cobra site

Are planetary scan jobs the ones where I drive an SRV up to some buldings, find the access point is on the other side of a wall, and get shot up by turrets? I prefer black box retrieval.
I thought they were the ones where you can't work out what you're supposed to do. Do you need to land exit your ship and scan or just nudge anything with the nose of your ship? Really, couldn't work them out.

Hello there o/ my precious FSD booster!! 2 jump away from my home system after fitting the class4 booster on my DBX.

Btw, I checked videos about the darn sensor frags, they are corrosive!? So i need to get special cargo for them!?

Nah - those are the missions (at least in Horizons) where you pick up your unshielded 850 m/s Viper, nudge the datapoints with your ship's nose while scanning them and then, when the alarms finally go off and the turrets start firing, you pop some chaff and blast off, laughing manically.

Mission instructions tell you to drive up in an SRV, look for a street light sized Comms tower that you can target, and use datalink scanner. A much faster way is to fly the nose of a small or medium ship with say 300MJ+ shields and scan it with the ship data link scanner.... then boost the heck out of there when the defence turrets open fire on you.
You will get fined and bounties which I pay off when I get to then end if a stack of 8 to 10 of these missions.
I use a Krait with 1032MJ shields (over kill for this) if I have a mix of missions needing combat or the iCourier with I think about 280MJ shields to do these.
If you rock up in an Anaconda, land and use an SRV or get stuck in the buildings and watch your 1000s of MJ of shields get wiped out in a few 10s of seconds. Then it's a trip to the rebuy screen or a hasty quit from the game.

850 m/s? Pfft. Mine does 951 /smug

Using an ADC to dock it though is an epic fail and it's touch and go to visit the rebuy screen /notsosmug

Thanks for the tips. Scan the pole amid the handful of buildings I can do. I recall a frustrating variant where the thing to scan was in a labyrinth of buildings. Maybe that was an assassination?

I used to quite enjoy doing the base-runs that required you to crawl the SRV up a wall (using the joint of two faces) or jump past the force-field gates, etc ...

Not done one in a long time (since they stopped bases only resetting once a week probably).

I remember when Dyson was a newbie. It makes me so proud to see him helping other newbies and becoming even more of an Elite Dangerous expert than I am.

Although that isn't a particularly difficult task.

I'm still a noob when it comes to Planetary Scans. Only done two and failed both times. I think it's down to scanning data points in a 'vette. I'll give it one more go in the Python or SRV.

this is probably more information than you guys required, but i'm a little hungover after the match last night and i'm arranging an afternoon screening of top gun with mum. it's her birthday so my treat, otherwise i'd make her pay. i'm looking forward to it though. the reviews sound good. not that i wouldn't go see it even if they were bad.

and apologies for the lack of caps. my usb mouse wouldn't work and the restart has now made me unable to type capital letters on my usb keyboard. not sure what happened there.
