Community Event / Creation The Buckyball Racing Club presents: Seven Sisters Speedway Remixed 17th - 27th June 3308 (Magic 8-Ball Championship, Race 5)

My racing is also done. Thank you for the most madcap race. I have had an absolute ball. I know @Raiko its been problematic for you this week with rl getting in the way but still you have been there as needed. Congrats to anyone who managed to even complete a race which should not be sniffed at in anyway.
For my part I have managed to genuinely compete in this race and possibly even left a mark (Well certainly in the walls of Ohm Horizons anyway). I managed to get entries in all 4 categories and was exceptionally pleased about the bonus sections, which many would say is exactly where I belong, breaking ships and flying like a madman.
For the records

Ships Destroyed 33
Runs completed about 40
Runs aborted around 11
Highest recorded ship temp 380
Highest Docking slot 747

Wherever I end up it was not for not trying.

Thank you @Raiko

See you all at the next one hopefully.

Sulu

With five hours to go I believe that @Captain-MD still holds the lead in both classes.

Will there be a late shock?
Not from this Callsign,

however curretly uploading final attempt, hopefully will be ready and posted before bed time lol

Outstanding Race, congrats to all that made it round in some sort of way,

Thanks to @Raiko for outstanding mangement and organisation.

see u all in the next round

PS. after doing the math it would appear that I am 2 seconds shy of being in the top 9, but at least i hel 3rd for a short period

Final run submitted - I've trimmed a couple of minutes off my last Cobra time, but I dunno if it's enough to get me out of the 1-point club.

This has been a great race. I must admit to being daunted by all the shenanigans, but @Alec Turner's video was really helpful. I watched that, and thought, ok, I can do some of these. (Even the blowing myself to bits part at the end! :ROFLMAO:) I know I'm nowhere near competitive on the raw times, but I've had a fantastic time doing all the silly stuff, especially my first-time things like chasing Thargoids and trying FA-off back-flips.

So big thanks @Raiko for taking me out of my comfort zone into a... new comfort zone :D
Well done everybody!

Okay folks the race is over since midnight.

Thanks to everyone who took part, and commiserations to anyone else wanted to join in, but RL got in the way- I often have that problem myself (hence no run from the host this time).

I'm sat on the bus heading to the office at the moment - so I don't think that I'll have the preliminary results board up until this evening.

After that I'll keep the Google form open until midnight tonight to make sure that I have received everyone's evidence and I'll finalise the boards tomorrow.

Ive had a great time watching all the runs :)

Well, I managed to complete this just under the wire. I had meant to do it over the weekend, but I forgot! I think I finished just after 23:00 UTC with less than an hour to go...

My best race so far, I did all the shennanigans which made it so much fun, although on one run it did result in a rebuy screen (I don't do anti-xeno stuff, so I didn't know booping a Thargoid would have it turn around and kill me!)

And now I know how to boost into a station shieldless and survive!

First of all, let me say well done to everyone involved in organising races. It's a lot of effort and its really appreciated, especially all the vetting of times that you have to do.

That said, I do have to say that I haven't enjoyed this one as much as the others. In the regulation cobra, you spend ten minutes (or longer) just getting to the "fun" stuff and even longer getting back. It's especially painful when a goid blows you up near merope and you've then got to haul yourself back to the start line. When you've got limited time, this can really cut down on the attempts you can make.

Apart from that congrats to everyone who took part (or blew up!)

Yes, I watched one of your streams, so I knew that you weren't that enthusiastic about the trip.

The original version used a regulation hauler so it was a faster trip, bit the even older original Pleiades Hip Hop used a regulation sidewinder, so that took just as long- and even unlimited had no engineering at that time I don't think.

Since Pleiades Hip Hop was our very first race I liked the idea of running the 7 Sisters again.

I did consider moving the start line ,but decided not to for two reasons:
  1. That gas giant is a great test of super cruise approach.
  2. Operation Ida has a big part of the Pleiades History and lots of us spent many jumps heading to and from the Nebula in Type-9s full of power gens and things, so I added the Ida Haul bonus and kept the long trip
Also, I'm the host of the A* Challenge, so a ten minute trip didn't seem very long. :ROFLMAO:

For me this “weekend,” it was less real life got in the way, and more it took priority. The extended clan went to see Lightyear on Sunday (the last film our families saw a film together was Frozen 2) and then had an impromptu cookout at my sister’s. Monday my dad and I went golfing, which is something that’s become somewhat infrequent over the last two years. :( Our golf dates used to be more frequent when my “weekend” was in the middle of the week. It’s much easier to have a free afternoon when the kids were younger and had less activities to be taken to, and two afternoons to schedule appointments on.

Thanks for hosting the race, Raiko. I wish I’d made more of an effort early in the race to squeeze in additional runs. There were definitely some evenings where I could’ve just ordered pizza to free up sufficient time to attempt a run. Just need to remember to not to make a habit of it. ;)

Thanks so much for organising this race Raiko, it's been great fun and equally frustrating at times. Especially when, as Colin said, you get destroyed by a Thargoid and then have to slog it back to the starting system, but then that's what part of these races is about. I did get quite frustrated by my inability to complete Shenanigan runs, I actually only managed the one I submitted during the whole time. Thargoids, Stations, Interdictions all playing their part.

But the pure race was where I thought I might have an advantage. I had chosen my route before setting off and I decided to get the two hip-hop systems out of the way first, then the two longest SC trips, back for Squirrels Nest (as jumping in and out of the system was going to be quicker than SC from one to the other), Repair at Obsidian, then aim back home.

So my route was Atlas, Sterope II, Pleione, Merope, Maia, Pleione, Celaeno, Asterope and then home.

The approach to Stargazer was probably the hardest part of the race for me. Approaching objects that are far away from Gravity Wells always pose an issue because you want to try and approach them quicker, cause it feels like it's taking longer as there's no frame of reference getting larger, but you have to maintain your discipline and hover around 4 seconds on the approach (or wherever you're comfortable). You need to be particularly careful as you get closer because the overspeed can happen quite suddenly.

The first run of the week I let the route plotter take me there, 13 jumps, and somehow I nailed it really well. I wanted to give a time that might be encouraging to others near the start of the race. I was then waiting for people to massively overtake me, but it didn't happen. Then Bruski submitted a time and it was slower than me, I was very confused...

I've spent many years in this game doing Science and various silly things with Canonn, I've made the trip to and from the bubble so many times I can't even remember. Going to the Pleiades was the first journey I took on the first day of Gamma. So I knew that in the 98 K Tauri system there is a Neutron Star that is only 11Ls away from the jump in point. I thought given how much people use out of game tools and min/max their routes, that people would also find out about it straight away. But it didn't happen.

I used the Neutron Route for my Shenanigans runs because I knew that it would be obfuscated due to the extra time taken to do bonuses, but I couldn't submit a straight run using it until the last day otherwise it would give away what slender advantage I had and people would definitely know something was up if I suddenly took 3+ minutes off my time. And I've never had the upper hand in a race ;)

And then Captain-MD happened :) It was only a matter of time. Unfortunately I couldn't match his speed. Using the Neutron Star cut the jumps down from 13 each way, to 10. I had a reasonable run, and then a couple messed up, but even if I had of nailed one I'm not sure I would have been quite as fast. Well played!

Many thanks to Raiko for staging this interesting race and congratulations to everyone who manged to take part! o7
I think I have been burned out after returning from a long time out in the black and I was not ready for the shenanigans as I needed to relearn basic flying/docking/landing but this race provided the best of both worlds and only the Thargoid hyperspace traffic police / xeno-bucky fans were a frustration. The regulation Cobra handled well but not too well and I needed to be careful. I was overflying on the pad - must have been spoiled by the DBX! (I also nearly smashed up my AspX today returning from HIP 22460 misjudging how much it does not slow down when approaching the toast rack!)
I'm going to take a break from 'regular' activities for a bit but I should be back for the next race. Take care!
(I had never heard of a neutron star between the Bubble and the Pleiades, so I'll have to bookmark 98 K Tauri now!)

Se7en Sisters Speedway Provisional Final Standings

No change at the top of regulation class, with @Captain-MD taking first place, in second and third place CMDRs Elastul Ma'fer (@Ozric) and @Bruski both make improved runs, with Elastul Ma'fer coming on top and leapfrogging Bruski into second place. Knowledge of the secondary neutron star at 98 K Tauri proved to be the decisive factor, as both Captain-MD and Elastul Ma'fer made use of the shortcut.

In the shenanigan-zone @Shaye Blackwood becomes the second CMDR to achieve a negative adjusted time, claiming fourth place ahead of Sulu (@Fish172).

A fine late entry by CDMR @Mack Winston in Sir Kenneth Grange was good enough to claim seventh place thanks to a big shenanigan bonus.

CMDRs Martinjameson (@Arrowroot 66) and @FearlessF21 both also made improved runs, but not quite fast enough to make it out of the #1pointclub - in the end only 20 seconds of adjusted time separated positions 9-13.

The neutron star and proved decisive in Open Unlimited class, with Captain-MD also taking first place in this class. Shaye was fastest of all around the Seven Sisters themselves, but lost around 30 seconds in each direction of the long Ohm Horizons trip.

Third place was taken by @Darplata94 who took revenge on @Bruski - both posted impressive new no-shenanigan runs, but Darplata was victorious, pipping Bruski by 22 seconds to reclaim 3rd place and consign the space bear to 8th.

In fifth postion CMDR @jspace became only the third CMDR to post a negative adjusted time in his DBX Outer Limits - o7 CMDR.

Here are the best attempts (one per ship) of each CMDR in Tony and Nuk's special challenges.

A few notes:
@Bruski your regulation class video has the Sony (SME) copywrite block on YouTube, so I can't view it even with a VPN, please could you send me some screenshots.
@jspace you only claimed for 2 tunnels in White Rabbit, but your speed stayed above 370m/s long enough entering the final tunnel to earn the bonus (which also made your run time become negative :))
@Mack Winston you didn't think you'd managed the 100m Xeno bonus, but you got to 91m so get the bonus after all.

I'll wait 24 hours before confirming these as the final times, and then I'll submit the scores to @Alec Turner.

Thanks for racing everyone - sorry to @PhoenixDfire and anyone else who didn't enjoy the long trip from the bubble. I always try to set up my races so that there's not one "ideal" ship, and this actually had a perfect balance this time between DBX and iCourier in unlimited class, but I appreciate that it wasn't ideal for the regulation cobra.

I'm planning to incorporate a tweaked speedway into the upcoming Odyssey version of the IronBucky, but I will definitely learn from what's happened this time. So thanks for letting me know your feelings. :)
