Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

You seem to be wrong about Elite, although seeing you created an account here just to discuss SC, it does not surprise. More surprisingly you are also wrong about SC. Not only most of the content and many core gameplay features are still missing after 10+ years (exploration, server meshing for grandious battles, capital ships command and control features, 100 systems, dynamic economy, subsumption AI, the whole SQ42 etc, I mean, I can go on…), but the little of what has been “done” so far for an eye watering almost 500 millions (the largest ever budget for a video game) is just barebones, and still significantly broken so not even that can even be really counted as “done”.

Hey, its Tier 0 yo!

the sc community is great, very big, very friendly and very active right now

Its the biggest. Very bigly. Some people say its the biggest community in gaming. My grandfather used to say, you know son, there will never be a game as big as Star Citizen. And he was a clever man, the cleverest. He used to develop games in his sleep. That's how great he was. And even he said Chris Roberts is a genius. You know, when i friend people in Star Citizen, they are the friendliest people ever. I should know, i'm one of the friendliest people around, everyone says it. They all say, Agony, wow, you're so friendly, and the best Star Citizen player ever. Its true, they say it to me all the time. Let's make Star Citizen great again!

It's like a constant rehashing of the Betamax versus VHS arguments

Video 2000 FTW!

Funny, because while V2000 did some things better than the other 2, it was late to market. The other 2 were already fighting over market share.

When CIG announced SC it was the first of the new crop of space games, it had the edge. But over 10 years they have frittered away that advantage. Rather than building a solid core product to release, instead they've worked on the assumption that they have infinite time and money (and so far it does appear to be working out for them). But by the time SC actually releases, the gaming landscape will have changed. It has already changed. By the time SQ42 releases, Starfield will probably already be released, with its base building and customizable ships, and other things CIG promised for SC (but not SQ42) and still hasn't delivered. Not saying Starfield will be a SC/SQ42 killer, but just that as time goes on more games will come out that will scratch the itches of certain players while CIG continue to say "ITS ALPHA YO!"

Well it is average, individual systems may differ somewhat. Depending on what kind of components, what kind of back load and so on...

Also its an average of FPS. If i may bring up ED for a moment (ducks), some people get significant difference between flying in space and walking around settlements, and from what i've seen, same applies to SC. Its one of the reasons EDO gets bashed, if you get a solid 60 in space it doesn't matter if you are in single digits on planets, it kills the experience.

Nothing hyperbolic about the post. Its true, without ship sales CIG would tank and CR and family would indeed lose their 6 (or 7?) figure incomes.

But can't be having criticism of CIG on Spectrum now can we?

I don't see the problem, today I logged in because I bought elite for $7.5, we'll see how it goes ;)

Welcome to Elite

You say the Star Citizen community is the friendliest communities around, and you are part of that community. By logic, that suggests you must be one of the friendliest people around

You only paid $7.50 for your copy of Elite: Dangerous. That must be a bit of a culture shock to you. I'm afraid that if you want some of the bigger ships in Elite, you won't be able to just buy them with money out of your wallet. You will have to play the game to obtain them

There are two silver linings here. There are cosmetics available for real money, so if your Star Citizen instinct of wanting to lord it over other players with your vast wealth kicks in, you can still do that

The other silver lining is that the bigger ships aren't that difficult to earn. It doesn't take too long for you to be flying about in an Anaconda. The speed of progression in Elite has picked up in the eight years that it's been available as a released game

Wow. It's amazing to think how long I've been playing this game. I would never have believed anyone if they told me I'd still be playing Elite in the space year of 2022 when I Kickstarted it back in 2012

But I guess it's the friendliness of the community that keeps me playing. Of course it's not as friendly as the Star Citizen community, because that's the friendliest. I would imagine there would be a bit of cross-pollination of the two communities seeing as they are both games about flying spaceships, and it must be the Star Citizen community members coming over to the Elite community that keeps it so friendly

Is there any paragon here nodding a head in moralistic agreement, who has never just taken the paychecks and shut up?

If so, there's a man at the Vatican who likes handing out sainthoods to homeless unemployed people

I hate to say it but... Raises hand

Not judging others though, and I know my situation is pretty easy. It is trivial for me to find a new job, my GF earns plenty on her own if need be and we don't have a kid to feed or anything.

But yes, if something is morally wrong in my work environment I speak up, and yes that means you sometimes get involved in year-long legal nonsense and are 'made redundant for unrelated reasons'. But if you are in a relatively easy position like me and you can afford to: why not?

I can empathise to an extent. I had the same complacency and arrogance as a soldier, especially as I gained rank. It's not like I could be fired or made redundant or anything...at least not outside of being shot for treason or sedition

Just caught it was a response to one of my posts...

Yeah actually in "take the paychecks and shut up" the "shut up" is quite to emphasize in the case of the 2 people quoted. If they weren't actively keeping the Roberts' delusion going on I would have nothing to say about them.

I have nothing agaisnt the silent workforce at CIG, I assume they're talented, engaged and do their best. Actually I feel for them, as I can't help but suspect they regularly work overtime, constantly in crush mode, with everchanging co-workers due to turn-overs and (ironically) understaffed in some key departments.

as I said before SC it is not for everyone, and that is fine, It would be interesting to compare how many stay and how many leave,
That would be great indeed except that CIG, the most transparent developer ever, has never released live figures for SC concurrency for example, for over 10 years. I would imagine that if it has not done so it is probably because the actual figures have never really looked too good to be shown.

In 2012 Chris and David, both had a very similar vision of what they wanted to do, except for some differences ( like the real universe vs the fictional one), they both talked about very similar things like about mining missions, moving cargo, bounty hunting, landing on planets, walking around your ship, walking around other players' ship (even stealing it), etc etc, they also talked about all the gaming opportunity that this things could offer

They both knew that the challenge was huge and that it was not easy to achieve, (they both said that) so each one chose to do it differently, David started with something simple to be able to deliver a "finished" product quickly with the promise of adding the other things later, while Chris began to build the pillars of all this not without encountering many difficulties along the way.

Now today we have that SC has almost all this, all about what they both said, and Elite does not and with its current engine it is practically impossible for fdevs to achieve it, so who built the game backwards???

don't get me wrong I used to play elite in the mid 90's, I loved that game, there is no point in berating Chris for having done it differently, especially when he has managed to do it 😉

I have this funny idea that CR and DB did set out at the start out like that. DB planning to do another version of Elite, since thats what Frontier does, and CR saying he's going to do a new game too. Then CR says he can do it in 2 years, and DB takes that up as a challenge, and says he'll release ED first. Immediately figuring he'll start out with only a few essential things, but he'll be first to release, DB releases ED, after a rough beta, but bam, ED is released! Then 5 years go by and DB is realizing maybe they didnt have to strip it down so much. DB decides to add legs, since development for it is going well, and 3 years later we have legs. It goes rough...and taking Cobra to its limits. But, even though rough, they learn their community not only wants legs (sorry players who wish ED would glue you to your seat forever!) but they want ship interiors. what? A completely backwards notion, since not long before EDO, most players in ED said they didnt want legs, let alone move around inside their ship. But, with how the current engine runs, as you say, thats not exactly possible. So they figure it out, and thought it's sort of a stationairy mass, we can walk around Fleet Carriers. Technically, walking around a ship. Brilliant! Using their current resources to the max and ticks a box or 3.
In all this same time, CR & company still haven't completed one system. Stuff is bug filled and the enjoyment from the game is from how, sadly, ridiculous it is...but cover it with the laughs, try to forget the hundreds spent on it...all minor coping mechanisms as with more time, the realization that nothing more is coming sets in.
On the other front, ED has a suggestion thread that has a plethora of requests and wants. Good to have, in case you happen to be in a company that makes their own game engines, and if they make another, will be able to handle more of those suggestions. I've seen what Bohemia has done in Arma Reforger with their new engine, compared to their earlier one and Arma 3, and its amazing how much more the new engine can handle, effortlessly. That gives hope that FDev follows suit, there...because they can.
Can CiG develop an engine to handle SC? Why not add that to the list, of say, completing one system, etc. Anyways, I doubt they can, nor would they, since they're happily raking in money without delivering.
Anyways, welcome :)

QFT

I think we have to give credit to Gologt there for the increase in viewership of SC content vs ED, NMS, EvE, etc
That's some dedication right there.

Nah, the big streamers are getting comedy clicks just fine without me ;)

I am here for the real connoisseurs though :)

Like, where else can you see a man fight with a water bottle for a minute before finally dehydrating to death? It's a thing of wonder...
