I don't do core mining purely because of the reasons you've all given. Seeking out cores is just a time sink and not worth it.

Unless I happen across one by accident - and it actually has a core worth mining - in which case my Cutter seems to do OK. It can get a bit tight if I have to get between the 'roid fragments but otherwise it's fine.

Since they changed the way mining worked i.e. spanked it with the nerf stick, cores are much fewer and further between. And we also get those wonderful notspots.

Still, platinum lasering is my go to when I feel like bolstering my credit balance.

I have thought about building a Python hybrid core / laser miner to do opportunistic core mining while laser mining. I happen to have found a good hotspot for Rhodplumsite right now. I've not had to wait more than a few minutes between cores and even found two next to each other yesterday. I am all too familiar with the boosting through the field and seeing no cores for 15 or more minutes experience. Even if it's not about the credits, your not getting to have fun actually doing the core mining when it's like that.
I might try the Void Opal hotspot in the same ring today. I think I will have had enough mining for a while after that. There is 33k per ton profit to be made on Agro. Treatment trading right now. I'm on another raise a billion credits challenge, this time using the carrier for mining/trading/base for pirate massacre missions. I've got some more carrier services to fund and I need a fairly large pot of credits to buy minerals off other commanders for a deep space exploration and mining tour I'm planning with the carrier.

Can you recommend any really good platinum mining locations?
Anywhere that can be reached in one fleet carrier jumps is ideal.

My experience was similar. I found the first core of Monazite (or whatever it's called) almost immediately. It was really cool having to maneuver around the asteroid setting the charges and then watching it actually blow up. Then going around blasting the material off and capturing it.

I was giddy it was so cool.

And then 45 minutes later I never found another one.

I've been camped out at one spot in Salikians the entire time I've played. Here's my setup:

Imperial Cutter for mining and Type 9 Heavy for transport at Gardner Port, which is only 36 LS from the hot spot. Go out and mine it all in the Cutter, then pop back by the port and switch to the Type 9 Heavy and go off to wherever the best price within 300 LY is.

Reason for that: It is annoying to me in the extreme to re-outfit my Cutter every time, then have to switch it back, then have to reset all the fire settings. I have the Type 9 set up for full defense and it's heavily armed and still has a 34 LY Jump range fully loaded, so it can get around 12 Jumps without having to refuel at all, which is almost always more than enough to get to where I'm selling it.

Sell the load, fly back to Gardner Port, swap back to the Cutter, rinse, repeat.

My credit graph told a story. Edward Tufte (the statistician) would be proud. The flat line is engineering and collecting materials over the week, then earning money and getting better at it over the weekend, then making just as much money from some concentrated trading.

Finally, pouring some more money into the new Phantom on Tuesday morning. Farther back it gets blurry and loses the precision. And now the financial ledger is secure for the as-blurry near future, all I see is lasers pewpew wanna go finish my combat rank in this puppy

Thanks I do use that tool sometimes, I was just looking to see if anyone knows of an out of the ordinary good place to go.

I've done a little mapped mining. It's easy enough, and certainly an efficient way to fill the hold.

It does suck some of the joy out of mining, though -- no more excitement from finding a high-percentage asteroid, no feeling of relying on yourself and your own skills. Every rock is high percentage, and the map tells you where the next one is every time.

Because of this I usually don't use a map, and prefer to make my own way.

But if all you want is credits quickly, it does work.

Is that when you shoot a probe at a ring system? I accidently hit a ring with a mapping probe and several orange spots popped up.

I found myself spending all my time trying to find the first correct rock and getting shot at by the haz rez residents instead of actually mining. Gave up and moved to a quieter part of the hotspot. Mmmmm. The main motivation was to try it out.

Those are the hotspots miners talk about. The content is much higher there than other parts of the ring.

Example: in a normal ring you might find a few rocks with some platinum in them, but it will low percentages like 8% or 12% at most. In a platinum hotspot, you'll routinely find asteroids with 40% or higher content. My record is 68.9%

Thank you, I haven't done any mining, "yet". Not really looking forward to it, I know, a bunch of you guys thoroughly enjoy it but I'm not a big fan. I spent my summers as a youth working a family mining claim. We had horses and pack mules and lived there all summer.
