Update 13, Narrative and Access to 4.0

Sorry, I didn't quite understand that. Horizons terrain will now be more like Odyssey, or is it staying the same as it has been?
You consider the new terrain less interesting, I consider the old to be so. My reply was in the same fashion as your question.
3.8 (which will not be updated, apparently) will retain the original terrains (but apparently will not move forward with new narrative). 4.0 will use the same planetary tech as in Odyssey.

it's pretty simple.

To simplify and reduce cost, fdev is creating another branch to add to the existing branches of the game. So you'll have Horizons 3.8, Horizons 4.x, and Odyssey.

You (at least for now) can continue playing in horizons 3.8 or you can try for free horizons 4.x. Horizons 4.x will have the odyssey engine with certain content locked away.

See, less confusing bug reporting, less overhead, and just simpler and more cost effective all around and nobody is forced to do anything they dont want to do.

Until they are.

Hmm, that's unfortunate. The final nail in the coffin for me I guess.

So then, given your comment, how would you explain how it's mostly people with high end rigs that seem to be the most vocal about problems, versus those of us with lower end rigs that have none (or very few)? I understand that we only hear about people with problems, because those without have no reason to complain, but I'm yet to see a low spec player complain, and have seen many that say Ody is fine for them
Differences in expectations, I suspect.

Me with my aging hardware and a 1080p monitor? Absolutely fine if it runs at 60FPS, and I can tolerate anything down to 30, so by now (not at launch!) it's fine for me. Similarly I just don't notice the terrible anti-aliasing - sure, it's obvious if I actually look at it, but I do not notice it during actual play. So for me, Odyssey is "adequate" performance and with a few more optimisations it might even make it above that.

Someone with the latest gear and a 4K monitor? Probably can't tolerate sub-60 FPS as much as me (because nothing else they own runs anywhere near that slow), might be expecting more like the 120 their monitor is capable of, and doesn't want to run below native resolution either ... so they might have far better kit, but they're also requiring considerably more of it, so the performance relative to what they want is worse. If they ran it in a 1080p window locked to 60 FPS, it'd work fine for them too in terms of raw ability of their hardware to keep up, but they're hardly going to do that!

There will be 3 options going forward:

v3.8 Horizons as it is now, no changes, possibly only critical bug fixes, possibly not forever...

v4.0 Horizons with Odyssey Planetary Tech and Scorpion SRV (IIRC) and access to future narrative updates

v4.0 Odyssey and all future improvements/content...

No doubt others will feel that way also, Frontier are not unaware of some player's loathing of EDO's planetary tech, perhaps they have already accounted for the expected wastage and anticipate new sales of EDO to the console transfers and the current Horizons but no EDO players buying, to negate the loss of players who feel unable to move along with the game.

Yeah, seems like the standard for most developers these days. Nobody puts the time and effort in to making things really good anymore...just get it out and get paid. Makes business sense, I suppose, but really sucks when something that was good is now broken and they just can't be bothered to fix it. I miss the days when video games were more about vision than profit.

I think Fdev have actually done what most company's have never done and kept two versions up until now.
Most games have updates/expansions and you get what you're given whether you like it or not, nerfs and all.

But we cant keep living in the past, for the good of the game we need to move forward.

I assume Horizons v4.0 will get any future improvements which are not specifically part of the EDO DLC - so, for example, new ships, new modules

All a matter of personal perspective I suppose.
I've spent more time per month playing ED since EDO was launched than I was in the year or so leading up to the alpha then launch. So for me it isn't broken, quite the opposite. Although I can understand your opinion differing from my own, we each choose what amuses us.

Perhaps it is just because ED is only another game in my stable (which has attracted more hours of play than any other in the last 5 years) and I didn't buy it with any preconceptions of what it should, or ought to, be. So I've enjoyed each bit they have added to the game, have had a lot of fun playing with a small group of other players, and like what I can do in the game.

Depends - Horizons had Horizons-only ships, no reason new ships like the Panther Clipper wouldn't follow that. Probably not modules (following the same paradigm).

Hi all,

We have just published the following article to our news page on the website and encourage you to have a read!

Please feel free to leave any thoughts down below and we'll do our best to answer any questions.

Hi @Bruce G,

The first row of supported features in Horizons 4.0 says:

"Updated Graphics (Especially Planet Rendering)"

Does this mean Horizons players will also now experience the same graphical problems present in Odyssey:
  1. Broken stellar lighting
  2. No volumetric fog on planet surfaces
  3. 50% framerate drop on planet surfaces
etc...?

They posted this:
To allow as many players as possible to experience the new narrative and gameplay elements, we intend to give all PC players access to version 4.0

Perhaps there will be further news on console ED a little later.
I read that as “To allow as many players as possible (not consoles) to experience…blah blah blah”. If it included consoles it would have been to allow everyone to experience blah blah blah.

In essence, thanks console cmdrs for your help in the CG’s. See ya suckers! Haha.

Note: I don’t really care, I accepted that consoles were being left behind back when they told us consoles were being left behind.

I just read it as a PC update - however you read it is your own concern, surely, not mine? But thanks for sharing, regardless.
