Personally I think it was a strategic mistake to even consider migrating Horizons to the 4.0 codebase, thereby (further) splitting the community. Frontier should leave Horizons behind on 3.8 and move forward with all future content only on Odyssey 4.0, including the new graphics rendering.

+1

Sounds smug but let's face it. 2 different games now. Splitting devs down the middle resourcewise

They are, the intent is to have Horizons 3.8, Horizons 4.0 and Odyssey 4.0. None of which can see the other when it comes to player instancing.

That's a mistake. Odyssey 4.0 should be a requirement for all future updates/content, including the graphics rendering. I fail to see why having Horizons 4.0 actually achieves anything at all. Anyone who can't run the 4.0 graphics will stay on 3.8, and those that can will stay on Horizons 4.0 if they don't want to buy Odyssey. Why? Frontier should actually make a compelling reason to switch to Odyssey.

It's one code base, and so what happens in space is incidentally included in Horizons 4.0. What's on the ground will be exclusive to Odyssey. Hence only one development effort.

As I mention in the 'Game News' section, we are still attentively farming feedback and relaying it in discussions around remaining, highly talked about issues with the development team to ensure we can provide accurate responses regarding their acknowledgement and progress.
In line with the "farming" of feedback and several posts in this thread regarding bugs, I feel somewhat obligated to include this here - and apologies in advance if this isn't the correct place for it:

The Aim Assist / Bullet Magnetism present in Odyssey is adversely impacting all projectile weapons' abilities to hit a laterally-moving target, and is particularly severe with the Manticore line of weapons. The following post contains two video clips that demonstrate how this issue impacts the Oppressor:

I am hopeful that once this bug is fixed the overall feel of the on-foot combat experience will greatly improve - as well as my less-than-stellar aim 🙃

I have better idea.
Remove 3.8 on PCs. "it have to go forward", so why care people with potato pc? (yes, /s if someone is insulted even by this idea).

Potato pcs aren't the problem.
Odyssey, and as a VR gamer I can testify to this, runs pretty poorly especially at bases/orbitals,planetside etc.
It's an ongoing fix....which l can also state, IS getting better since launch.

Performance has seen improvements since launch, but it's far from being perfect... I'm glad they're still working on it. I hope they'll optimize some scenario and events more in the future like when AI spawn, or when AI dies, or when AI shoots at you (apparently performance drops when that happens, the AI is getting their revenge!!) or when a ship lands close by, or when multiple ships fly around you (on-foot), or when you turn on the power in a settlement, or ground CZs, or concourses dropping frames out of nowhere, yeahhhhh...

Wow...just read the whole thread! Peeps are peeved 4 versions of instancing, or is it 3.?
Buy odyssey!!
Problem solved!
Unless everyone buys Odyssey, the problem is not solved.

Though even before this new Horizons / Horizons split, Open has been terrible lonely for me for a couple of years now, with the exception of very very VERY rare bounty hunting CGs. These days I might as well log into solo if I'm going to play. It's a night and day difference between this and a proper MMO like ESO.

It depends on how they want to release the next DLC, if Odyssey is not required as a stepping stone then there will be a bridge from Horizons too. I speculate they might want to offer an upgrade path to the next DLC direct from Horizons after considering there are 8 million Horizons owners out there. Forcing people to buy Odyssey to play the next DLC ? Does that chained DLC thing ever happen? I guess you can market bundles but will that annoy existing Odyssey owners if that happens say next year? Or you offer a discount on the next DLC to Odyssey owners? The fact that they are trying to move Horizons to codebase 4.0 since the beginning suggests that disappointing Odyssey sales is not a factor though and I have found it very curious how they plan to bring in more premium content as from a marketing and content gating view it seems quite complicated.

Well having so many versions, & not supporting gaming's future, especially spacesims, VR is madness hehehe...just my inadequate humble opinion

Shameless grappling hook plug
