Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

Absolutely insane!

Lol, sorry can't help myself, somehow the current reality of E: D goods value in Cr just doesn't compute! :D
I mean, that's some mineral, that kind of sale value is about 100 times more than it would've been before FDEV gave totally up and went with INSTAGIBMEALLNAO whiners demands.
They've actually been nerfing mining earnings since before I started playing this past March. In just the last few months it's gone down about 23%.

If you do a search for best mining material you'll see tons of posts about Void Opals and how people would get close to a million per ton over them and many were selling them for 800,000 or more per ton just a year ago.

Now, the highest price is right at 300,000 per ton, a decrease of 63% over the last year and a half.

Plantium has taken a nose dive too. When I first started, I could sell platinum for 340,000 per ton just about anywhere. It's highest price right now is right at 280,000. That's a nearly 18% decrease in just the last three months.

Clearly, the days of "easy money" mining are over.

True that. But that's irrelevant, as the item is entirely optional novelty, which can pay the maintenace pretty easy itself. :)
No, it is not irrelevant. It's actually the point. The economy changed to make it possible to buy it. If people can't buy it and afford to keep it then there goes all the sales of customizations for them in skins, layouts, engine colors and all from FDev's site.

Approaching the binary moon with the 3 geo + 1 bio signal, it became evident they are quite close together...

So close that I could scan both of them at the same time 😹

Past experience with vacuum worlds and bio signs has left me a bit cynical about my chances of finding anything - I need not have worried! These moons did not disappoint and I finally ticked off a bucket list item for old school biology.

Unfortunately while the 'trees' are certainly full of fruit, most of it was chromium and magnesium, which I do not need at all.

The second moon however, yielded a decent proportion of zirconium and arsenic, which I don't have much of. I may skim around here for a while and top up a little.

Yeah, I see the logic, it's FDEV bean counters dictating development direction.
I'm just an old fart shouting "get off my lawn filthy casuals", sometimes forgetting that without those same casuals the servers might already been switched off for the game being too unprofitable for the studio.

So, in game & game world perspective I'm very disappointed because of ridiculous hyperexpansion of credit earnings, but when you remember real world realities, it makes sense.

It's just noobs crying NEEERFF!1!1! every two weeks that sometimes makes me irritated enought to remind folks of how things were. :)

So those pinkish balls on the tree are actually mats? That's way cool. There's a thread here someplace that I was reading about moons colliding or about to collide and they had an app that could predict the date it would happen, can't remember where though.

I don't think this is quite what you're looking for, but it has some possible collision dates listed:

And here's some more info:

Small update, found a double overlapping Alexandrite/Void Opals hotspot. 14 crackable asteroids in 2 hours, over 200 cargo filled.

Not bad for 2 hours of gameplay!
VO's and Alex seem to give a healthy income - if you can get enough of them! :D

For me, and I appreciate I have the tools so probably not something a newcomer can do, farming platinum is my main source of income should I choose. I can get ~300mCR selling just over 1,000 per mining excursion.

I used to make 10's of millions doing cargo hauling missions but they seem to have been nerfed somewhat the last time I looked.

Still, as has been said, getting 100's of millions is still fairly easy and pretty necessary if one wants to own and pay UC on an FC! On foot mission rewards won't cut it...

No those are part of the tree - the materials are aggregations which you find* on the trunks and branches - like you find mushrooms in the real world.

Cordycep Growth (Very Common Materials) - Carbon, Sulphur, Iron, Phosphorus

Polyporous Growth (Common Materials and Rare Materials) - Chromium, Manganese, Selenium

Mussidaen Seed Pod (Standard Materials) - Niobium, Tungsten, Molybdenum

Phloem Excretion (Rare Materials) - Antimony, Polonium, Yttrium

* EDIT - I forgot to say "...and shoot off..." - just in case that wasn't obvious.

Void Opals are not worth the effort. At all. You can make literally 2.5 times the amount just laser mining platinum. To fill up a 200 ton hold of a Python with Void Opals will take you two hours at least. That will make you 60,000,000 credits at current prices.

I can fill up the 500 plus ton hold of my Cutter with Platinum in an hour and a half, sometimes a bit less. That makes me 140,000,000 credits.

Alexandrite is the same way. It's only worth 400,000 per ton and can only be core mined, so the amount of time you spend makes it not worth the effort. If it's not worth at least 600,000 per ton, then it's not worth core mining at all because you can laser mine platinum much, much faster.

Edit to add: I do sometimes core mine anyway, simply because it's so much more fun than laser mining.

Out in the black mapping and bios, raws and mining. Only cores n sub surface/surface...ill laser mine if its staring me in the face.
Doing it all easily pays for upkeep. 3000t of mixed cores thus far. Should more than pay for the trip out and tritium used.
Might stay out at Hawkins cos its so undiscovered! Not even 5k out atm. Slow progress what with all of the above hehe.
Doing mixed things defo streams the game better. Like it was meant to be played like this...least that's how I see it.
But I have my fortune and fc and ships so I'm just marking time hehe.

For anyone wanting to (attempt to ) hitch a ride to Hutton Orbital: the carrier R.Buckminster Fuller is currently on its way to Hope City in Ross 130. I intend to buy a Python cargo shuttle here and fill up with trade goods (from nearby systems). Later today or tomorrow (UTC), I'll try to jump close to Hutton Orbital to refill with Mugs and Gin. If there's no parking space available, the jump will be postponed (I'll put up another notice when the jump is scheduled - but that only leaves a 15 minute window for docking).

If that works out the same way it did last time :(, I'll stay there for the week, then return to the western edge of the Bubble.

P.S.: Still got a few Mugs available on request - it's the Gin that has run out.

Just looked at the sysmap for Alpha Centauri - carrier infestation there so Eden or Proxima may be a little hard to get to. You might get lucky though...

won my first "salvage" on foot mission with enemies (they were only 2). hurray

You are on your way to scav takedown missions! Power-ons can be fun if there's scavs already there or they drop in as you land. What's not so fun is when you are merrily stealing material from lockers and the building starts shaking... ruh roh, incoming! If you are just in your ship, make sure you park ~500m from the settlement. If you've deployed the SRV, you might find it under attack...

There's 1-2 fruits per tree that look very out of place 😹 Sometimes they get stuck in the branches, but it's possible to just go jump on them and they'll fall out.

Before I took a break from ED (which ends on Monday 22nd - lets not talk about the sneaky hour I played a few days ago) I tried a couple of simple on foot missions given by my player faction in my home system. It was just delivering a box or data - forget which. I'm trying to get interested in the on foot side of the game beyond exobiology. I quite liked getting out of my ship to go and find the mission contact, but finding them was tough. There is no mission marker to follow that I could see. I also don't know my way around the on foot wheel menu.
I don't mind doing short missions like that for 3 to 5 inf as I'm not out of the ship for long. Part of the problem is any mission that requires my undivided attention for more than about 30 minutes is hard to take on. My play tends to be in short regular bursts. This is also why Thargoid combat doesn't work well for me. Even when you have the ability, it takes too long to kill an interceptor.
