Make the engineering grind remotely palatable

I have a little over 4 weeks in-game too with that commander, I'm currently engineering a Viper MK IV.
I've got :
Based on this being first 4 weeks, unlocked some engineers, have a reasonable ship, and already have some credits and mats in your inventory (not starting from zero), after 4 more weeks you could easily unlock a few more engineers, purchase, outfit & engineer a new ship. Along with other activities. If you desired. And continue on month after month.

Admittedly it might be tough to purchase and fully outfit and G5 engineer a combat Corvette* two months in a row. Rotating new ship builds between general purpose & utility, exploration, mining, and combat evens out the materials used.

* Yes, I realize it needs to be unlocked. Just using it as an example of a ship that consumes lots of materials for engineering. Compared to an Asp exploration ship.

I've got :
  • G5 FSL drive
  • G3 thrusters
  • G2 shield gen
  • G2 lasers
  • G3 railguns
  • G3 sensors
  • G1 generator
It was relatively easy because I selected missions based on mats rewards, explorered systems for signal sources (scooping stuff) and went out exploring in deep space (great way to get mats + cash + ranks).
I'm next to Elite in exploration and have 250 000 000 in cash.
I agree Elite is a slow paced game, that need to be played for extended periods of time to get anywhere. It's part of its DNA. A sim in a gigantic, size 1:1 galaxy.
The story arcs evolves on months for instance. There's nothing to rush about anyway. Take your time, explore, experiment, read, visit. Very little will be spoon fed. It takes effort and it is very satisfying if you get it right (granted, it is not a game that suit everybody)

EDIT : don't follow guides to cut corners, get rich fast, etc.. It just ruin the game. There's nowhere to go. It is all about the journey.
I don't believe it. It is completely against my overall experience with ED.

Here you go. =)
Would I lie?

This one just so you can see a deep travel in feasible in a cheap ship (30LY max range or so).
Should earn me about 500 000 000 credit when I get back, trip was about 30 000 LY, which include many ELW and WW discoveries, many exobio, etc..

Last year my alt I unlocked a bunch of engineers and engineered 4 ships in roughly 2-3 months. I already knew how to play the game (no learning curve).

Regular game play, no grind-farming*.
  • Sidewinder (Just core internals)
  • Type 6 (trade - Just core internals and shield)
  • Chieftain (pve combat)
  • Krait Mk II (multi purpose)

I'm not special. Lots of players can do it.

* Unless you consider HazRes sites grind farming. And trade runs, killing interdicting pirates. Maybe it is. For me its just playing the game.

To be fair the learning curve can be significant. Again, it is not a game that can be rushed.

I'm a pretty casual player and totally doubt I could do it. It's what the game kept telling me.

Honestly many of us traveled out to the original Colonia discovery in 17ly range ships to take part in the CG at the time, my Python fully loaded did just over 17ly, I left it there and purchased a 16ly Cobra Mk3 and flew that back to the bubble, so basically 45,000ly with 17ly jump range max. It's so easy these days to get a big jump range!

Well then, good news!
You absolutely don't have too!
Basic cheap ships are enough for most of the content.
Join a player group, they will show you some hints and it's nice to share the game content with other sentient beings =)
My experience tells different. CZ are bullet sponges and require engineering. Cheap ships don't help at all there.

I remember doing that - with a tiny fuels scoop too - each jump took a few minutes, as my scoop was so small. I almost went mad getting there. I'm not sure I arrived before the CG finished either, with the small amount of stuff I had :)
It was 'fun' though

Ennemies can be tough in CZ, that's true.
Does your loadout works against pirates?
Do you have a https://coriolis.io/ link to see what you use?
I remember having fun with a Vulture on my previous account. Good fighter, agile, big guns (not without weaknesses tough)
The Vulture woked fine before engineering. Everything I used worked as expected. After they were just useless peashooters. The FAS was somewhat useful because I could at least ram targets to death with it.
Not that it paid off in terms of rewards, but at least it got the job done.

The FGS should be fine then! 7 guns IIRC!
+ 1 SLF!
