4.0 | Now Live

Ah, interesting.

My 3 accounts have separate installs, so that I can run them simultaneously in multicrew (can't do that from multiple launchers in the same folder). But if this caps out at Odyssey's 50gb, then that's 100gb for the 2 alts.

However, if I put launchers for the alts in the main account's folder, presumably I could run Horizons 4.0 with either of them (but not simultaneously). And use Horizons 3.8 if I want to multicrew.

I can imagine someone from Fuel Rats or Powerplay communities who will need to help others, but cannot due to inability to start Horizons 4.0 to instance together - now they need to tell that other one to start Horizons 3.8 or buy Odyssey - was that FDev strategy to improve cash flow?
I'm not PR expert like some people here (with their glorious strategy "force all people to buy new dlc ASAP, oh, buy arx!"), but I never would say my friend, which bought HZN, tried 4.0 and liked it "ok, if you want to play with me, let's jump to old, worse (for my friend) version, or buy new dlc".

It is terrible strategy.

I think a lot of this angst could have been avoided if Frontier had called it "Odyssey Lite" rather than "Horizons 4.0".

Because that's what it is. But Odyssey Lite players can't instance with Horizons or Odyssey players, only other Odyssey Lite players.
The easiest for FDev now is to add this hotdamn menu item to run Horizons 4.0 to Odyssey players. I would say it should happen before this thread reaches 50 pages if there is anyone clear thinking left at FDev.

Here's the thing you don't understand: I don't need to justify why I want the things that I paid for. My money contributed to this product, and if client 4.0 can run in Horizons mode, it means I don't need client 3.8 occupying 20 GB on my hard disk any more. Again, THIS IS WHAT I PAID FOR, and the reasons why I want it are none of your business.
Arguing in a public forum makes it everybody's business. 🤷‍♂️

Maybe you could get away with that today - but in a month's time all new Horizons players will probably have only played 4.0 (why would they even install 3.8?). So you'd then both have to go back and play a game that maybe neither of you recognise if you want to team up. Very strange decision from fdev this one.

Since people are a bit confused about which version of the game corresponds to which set of files, here's a quick breakdown.
In the Elite Dangerous\Products directory, there are two subdirectories:
  • elite-dangerous-64 (around 19.8GB, these are the files for 3.8)
  • elite-dangerous-odyssey-64 (around 50GB, these are the files for 4.0)

This is what gets executed for the various options in the launcher:
  • Elite Dangerous (the base game with no expansions) : elite-dangerous-64/EliteDangerous64.exe with the "SeasonOne" argument
  • Arena: elite-dangerous-64/EliteDangerous64.exe with the "CQCArena" argument
  • Horizons 3.8: elite-dangerous-64/EliteDangerous64.exe with no arguments
  • Horizons 4.0: elite-dangerous-odyssey-64/EliteDangerous64.exe with the "SeasonTwo" argument
  • Odyssey: elite-dangerous-odyssey-64/EliteDangerous64.exe with no arguments

So having both Horizons 4.0 and Odyssey available would not add any extra files to the installation, they're all there already.
So then it would be relatively simple to set up a minimal launcher to launch Horizons 4.0 if owning Odyssey. Or even use the task manager trick to start it up. Strange that we don't get this option by default in the launchers, but there maybe some unknown reasons for this.

Maybe it's so they can show the shareholders that they still have a large number of downloads so they don't sell their shares and move on?

I would hesitate to suggest attempting it manually because the launcher retrieves a list of "authorized products" for the current login, and for Odyssey owners Horizons 4.0 isn't included (hence why it doesn't show up as a launch option).

Some have tried it already a long time ago with no repercussions, but yes maybe it's not an advisable thing to do.

Personally I have no need at all to do it, just pointing out the possibility.

All good here, new launchers working. I can boot any account into Odyssey (OK, "Horizons 4.0" for the alts) with launchers in the main folder, and the old alt launchers still start Horizons 3.8. I just need to remember to ignore the option to install 4.0 on the old launchers.

I'm guessing that "Horizons 4.0" uses Odyssey bindings? My batch files will handle that, but it's likely to cause issues for some.

yeap, odyssey bindings and gfx options - one of the reasons i've upgraded my moved_from_xb commander to 4.0 (and since Odyssey is discounted on Frontier Store, i will get it too)

how come?
you mean Odyssey players cannot log in Horizons 3.8?
Odyssey Players cannot access Horizons 4.0
Which is an issue because Horizons 4.0 and Odyssey cannot instance together, even in space where everything remains constant.

For you specifically, my earlier point from a couple pages back: The majority of the playerbase consists of adults. The ratings the game has (ESRB T, PEGI 7, etc) does somewhere between "jack" and "all." Anyone younger usually doesn't have the patience to learn this game.

Elite: Dangerous is the 4th game. The 3rd was almost 20 years ago, the first, nearly 40. Long-time players of the series are old folks now.

Trolling or just being obtuse?

The argument is that Horizons 4.0 is the future (3.8 not being updated) but EDO cannot actually launch Horizons 4.0 in order to instance with players who are running that. For some obscure reason FD have not provided EDO players with the EDH4.0 option in the launcher and whenever they have deigned to comment on this at all we just get told to get over it (I am being polite there).
