The cogs are whirring server side, promise o7
Hello Sally.

Firstly, allow me say thank you to you and all the team for a smooth transition from XB to PC and again for the update to 4.0 for me it was seamless.

Other than saying thank you I have a quick question. Having converted my Mad Monk RRW Xbox character to Eben sheti'yah new PC character. How do I go about upgrading and purchasing Odessey for this account as there seems to be no mention of either Elite or Horizons on the character store account. Which package do I need to purchase?

Your assistance in this would be most welcome.

My highest regards 07

You need to log in to whichever store has your base base game and buy Odyssey there. If you got the free copy it will be on the frontier store. Links on the sale post:

This release is a courtesy and free upgrade for non-Odyssey owners. They now get to try the 4.0 codebase with all the perks that contains as well as engage with future content and narrative updates at no additional cost where this wasn't possible before. Of course, we still hope they will upgrade to Odyssey for the full experience the game has to offer.
Okay so based on that would Frontier be willing to refund one of my Odyssey Purchases so that I can instance and play with my Wing Mates without having to revert to Horizon 3.8?

Or maybe just no one at FDev realized why Odyssey owners might want to run Horizons 4.0.

It's almost like no one at FDev realizes they have a multiplayer game.

yea, that was my point - it's a key/authorization thing, something easy to implement, which they already implemented in Horizons / Base Game combination like 6-7 years ago

And i really dont think it's a Launcher issue here...

I tried renaming the product directory and the minimal launcher with /edh4 pointed to the Odyssey client to no avail.

Edit: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/threads/4-0-now-live.608146/post-9945510

It is ultimately the launcher.

I tried renaming the product directory and the minimal launcher with /edh4 pointed to the Odyssey client to no avail. So yeah, it's not just a launcher thing; they haven't linked the 'EDH 3.8 in 4' product to those with Odyssey accounts.

@MartinG pointed me to a post about launching the game in different modes (wording?) but it is a bit too geeky for me (I would struggle to deal with the "process explorer") - maybe you might like to play with it (sorry, I mean explore it from a technically competent perspective) to see if it lets you run in EDH4.0 mode:

This actually works.

So, it's not even that Frontier hasn't unlocked the product for Odyssey accounts, it's that the Launcher doesn't provide the option to append the appropriate season to the command that's passed to the game.

For the record, this is my Odyssey account:

Well, there we go. It is already in the game, you can just pay to disable the option. So at this point the remaining possible explanations seem to be:
1) Frontier deadass just forgot to consider that Odyssey owners might want Hoz 4.0 to allow for instancing with friends during space narrative events.
2) Some sort of 4D chess plan to increase Odyssey sales
3) Insanity (see option 2)

That's what odyssey is for.

But does it instance with "true" Horizons 4.0?

Also, Odyssey account, playing vanilla pre-Horizons (SeasonOne) Elite: Dangerous, on the Odyssey client:

But does it instance with "true" Horizons 4.0?

I haven't tested that yet, but I would expect it to, as it's reporting Odyssey users as being in a different game mode in the social menu, and all Horizons 4.0 should be doing is appending the same "SeasonTwo /SeasonTwo" to the command line argument that I did manually.

Maybe, sort of, but the in ship menus for example are EDO menus (system summary on nav panel), so ... I dunno. Apart from the menu looking like pre Horizons, what is pre-Horizons?

No idea why anyone would actually want to play old versions of games though, besides curiosity.

I keep thinking, all these people demanding 4.0 Horizons ... would never actually play it.

It's the 4.0/EDO client; the menus will invariably be EDO.

Planetary terrain.

That planet I was over is landable and heavily populated, but it not only has an exclusion zone and no visible settlements, it's being rendered as vanilla ED would render it because I'm logged in with the SeasonOne argument that disables Horizons and Odyssey terrain.

My wife's account doesn't have Odyssey (and won't be getting it until it's free) and I was not planning on installing 3.8 on either her system nor mine. If I want my character to directly interact with her's, I'll either have to use the above workaround, or put 20GB of redundant (as both of these systems are plenty fast enough to handle the 4.0 performance tax) stuff on both systems.

Why do I continue getting punished for purchasing Odyssey?

I uninstalled Odyssey ages ago, and was quite looking forward to Horizons 4.0, however as an Odyssey owner, I don't have that option.

I refuse to install Odyssey, should never have bought Odyssey, and now am continuing to regret ever buying it.

Give us the Horizons 4.0 option, or let me obliterate Odyssey from my account.

If you have multiple accounts (Odyssey and Horizons-only) running from the same install using different launchers... what happens? Will your Odyssey launcher see Horizons 4.0? (maybe not, as obviously your Horizons launcher can't see Odyssey).

I'm unable to test that, as I am rapidly running out of disk space now.

I have three steam accounts, two of them with a licence for Odyssey. All three accounts use the very same installation (about 50GB for 4.0 and 20GB for 3.8). There is only a difference in how the game is started, when I use my Base Game/Horizons only account. A command line parameter "SeasonTwo" is added. Odyssey and Horizons 4.0 are using the exact same game client.

This is another fine mess FD has put itself in to. They should have either announced H4 as a free "upgrade" for H3.8 players (but why?), or not released it at all. If FD wants more players to play Odyssey, they should just put it on sale. What a waste of time and effort, getting the community hot and bothered for nothing.
