Uh, is it supposed to look that bad ?

Why is the pixelation so intense and the colours so bad on that planet ?
Almost looks like my GPU is dying, but it's not, some planets just do look like this, it's rare, but it happens.
Surely it's not intended, right ?

My old GTX 960 looked like that but that was because I was using High planetary settings only and not Ultra. Are you sure you have the planetary textures set properly, because it is a completely different area of the graphics settings than the upper part.

Make sure you have disabled checkerboard setting

Also, it still looks that bad if you restart? (full quit to desktop and then restart the client and if it doesnt help, maybe a full restart of the computer should be tried)*

*(i do have a laptop and i rarely restart it, most of the time i leave it in its sleep modes over night - so after a while, like once in 2-3 weeks i do have to restart it, else if starts to run really bad)

Yeah i'm playing with checkerboard rendering off, i tested with it on just for the sake of it, changes nothing to this issue.
Edit : forgot to mention that yes, i restarted 3 times, once for the bug as i encountered it, and 2 when i changed the checkerboard settings, nothing changed.

I have found one planet that looks like this (so far). It was one of the first I landed on, so I my expectations sank pretty low for how planets were going to look, overall. Interestingly, the planet I saw with this effect was also similar brown colors, with some patches of ice or snow (or at least gray/white). It had that same, very obvious pixelation pattern all over the surface when viewed from altitude (yet on the ground, the detail textures aren't pixelated at all).

But several more landings now, and I've not seen this odd effect since. Ice worlds and rocky worlds alike, have looked much better.

I'm on a low spec PC and settings to match, BTW. No idea.

It’s weird, some planets exhibit this issue more than others. Fortunately these planets seem to be rare from my experience. How do other planets look?

I call them QR code planets. They are not rare at all.

It looks OK to me. You seem to be at the height where detail stops being resolved. In your second picture the star is quite low so the smaller stones littering the surface will make patchwork shadows.
What was the altitude of your remote camera? What does it look like at ground level?

Less pixelation due to the close proximity, but honestly, rather bad :
