Planet Zoo: Twilight Pack arriving 18 Oct 🦇

So this new exhibit size... are they just for nats, or do any current animals use them?
Yeah I was confused about that, presumably having them in the base game makes no sense as an empty she'll so either a) the next pack is likely to be birds and introduce some free birds in the update or b) at least some of the existing exhibit animals can be in the bigger exhibits.

If b) then it would make sense that at least some of the safe ones that educators can now handle would be able to be in the large exhibit. I think this is likely because the free update has no given some exhibit species separate functionality when before they all behaved the same

People wanted fully modular aviary systems for birds. Now it's very much likely that they'll just be in these big exhibits and won't be full habitat animals like what people want. That also means no mixed bird aviaries.
I hear you. But I’d rather have birds in some capacity in the game, and would prefer it to be walk through exhibits than birds in the current exhibit boxes. It’s a compromise but it’s something at least.

Man, I thought the Africa Pack was a let-down, but this really takes the cake. The scenery is too specialised for being worthwhile, the animals are of no interest and just add to the carnivoran bloat already in this game's roster, and the bat completely shuts down any hopes of an aviary system.
I just do not get it why the bats should shut down hopes for aviaries. And animal choice is always a subjective thing. You do not like them, other people do. We got 3 species from the top 30 and the so called oddball with the Skunk.

Oh okay, I misunderstood.

Well I mean I wouldn't complain with this for birds as well. They are either perched or fly around. As for the bigger ones I don't think we will be completely abandoning bigger aviaries

What? Frontier, you never fail to surprise us! I think many of us epxected an animal pack including me.
The fruit bats are an extremely exciting surprise, I also love having a raccoon, skunk and wombat. The red fox though, well, I wouldn't have need it. A fossa, ocelot, kiwi or porcupine would have been better choices in my opinion. And I'm not sure about the scenery, looks too themeparky to me, I want to build a zoo, not a ghost train...

From Steam:

Find your favourite red fox from a huge variety of stunning colour morphs, including silver, black, white, cross, and piebald.
There’s a new enrichment item too – your animals will love playing with the bouncing pumpkin ball!
I wish we also had a large hollow tree as an enrichment (a larger version of the African one)

I love the new path and finally a career scenario! Some items are too themed, but others seem pretty useful.

I spy a wombus 👀

So, after reflecting for a moment: I've never been a fan of the Halloween/gothic/spooky aesthetic, so I have a feeling most of the scenery is going to be lost on me. Can't say I'm a huge fan of the trailer's vibe. Gargoyles? Bleh. I hope we also get some less stylized statues as well, and I hope the signs aren't overly stylized. I know I'm probably in the minority there, but so it goes.

It not being an animal pack is a shocker. Presumably that means we'll get an animal pack in December, so thankfully it won't be a big wait, but as of right now I'm not super keen on trading three species in this pack for an aesthetic that doesn't work for me at all. Especially because like I'd brought up yesterday, these species are all relatively same-y. Four small mammals, three burrowers, three North American carnivorans... Don't get me wrong, I genuinely love all four species (and I can't stress enough, the red fox was second only to the tanuki in how much I wanted it), but as a package, the animal lineup feels left a bit wanting...

...Or at least it would, if not for the exhibit species. Like, what? Bats, in a new type of exhibit? Who had that on their bingo card? Is this really a suggestion that aviaries are coming? Because that's the only way I, traditionally an aviary pessimist, can take it. And even if not, wow, what a bombshell of an announcement. This is the first exhibit species in the entire game I've actually gotten excited about.

Buuut to swing things back around, and into the realm of speculation, the notion that birds might actually be coming has me very concerned if there's only one pack left as I've feared. That means that potentially, these are the last traditional habitat species, the last mammals, being added to the game. I know none of us want that, but now it's going to be a lingering anxiety about the game until we figure out what's going on in December.

Also... now that we've actually got the theme confirmed and it is a spooky Halloween theme like I was so convinced would never happen... no Tasmanian devil? I'm not even a huge stickler for the species, but I literally can't think of a more appropriate inclusion here. Especially over the wombat.

Anyway, I hope this wasn't too negative overall. I'm excited about the pack still, and I'm excited for all five animals. Can't wait for the 18th.

Some further thoughts:
  • I’m on board with birds in December. The fact that we get bats now and the fact that this is a 5 animal pack makes me think the next will be at least 8 animals and may include flying birds.
  • December is big update time and would be perfect to come with an aviary system. This may also bode well for the longevity of the game, as does the fact that we don’t get very popular animals this time.
  • If we get this exhibit format in the base game, does that mean we can have iguanas in a walkthrough?
  • This type of exhibit would be a good solution for animals like sloths and tarsiers too if they won’t work as habitat species.
  • Good chance we’ll get more exhibit updates in the future. Perhaps a reptile house DLC next year with smaller exhibit boxes.
  • Now that we have 3 themes with European scenery, it’s about time for Southeast Asia and the Middle East to get representation.

Well this I didn't expect, but the new animals are very welcome! Not sure if the bats mean we will one day get birds though.. And hopefully we will still get a porcupine and tasmanian devil in the future. Not really a fan of the wombat even though I will use them due to the lack of Australian animals. I will be buying this pack.

Hm. I like all the animals in the pack individually, the wombat being my favorite, but all together I can't help but feel like this is the weakest lineup of any DLC so far. Bats are among the few animals I never cared to have in PZ (I'll better run after that confession...), so they don't do much for me. It does seem like Frontier might tackle some birds next then, but I really hope that doesn't mean we won't get any "normal" exhibit animals anymore from now on, given that they were skipped over in favor of the bats this time. I really wanted another snake, to be honest.

The building set might be too themed for my taste, but I'll wait to see it in game. Already didn't care much for the Christmas stuff in the Arctic pack. That we get piles of scattered leaves is probably the most exciting thing apart from the wombat.

The raccoons look great, though, so I'm ready to have my opinion completely turned around by the animals. And until then, I guess I'll hope for the winter DLC to be more up my alley.

You've tricked us all ,Frontier! After the stream I really thought of an noctural animal pack. But Owwwww, WOWWWWW, I love it!!! o_O
All the chosen animals were on my wishlist. And a new career adventure, too, Yippeeeee!( en hoping there are more to come)

This pack gives more possibilities for the fantasy builders too.
I already was thinking of making one too. Now it will be a twilight zoo ...of course!

@Mjmannella I think most of us realized the aviary system would always rely on looped animations tbh if this is what your getting at.
I actually disagree. There’s no reason birds would need to be looped anymore than monkeys or lemurs. As I have said many times, birds in zoos aren’t constantly flying all over the place. They perch, hop, flap about a bit, climb along a branch. They could totally work within current systems. But anyway, that’s a conversation for another time and place.

I think this dlc actually confirms a longer life for the game!
