Winter DLC Speculation

This will be a densely packed season for us, from the release of the Twilight pack we will have 2 months until the next pack probably, and in between there is a possibility of us receiving a free reskin animal for PZs anniversary on 5.11. around 2-3 weeks after the Twilight pack launches.

Yeah should be a very exciting end to the year, hopefully the free reskins continue as there is so many similar animals to fill continent gaps

That makes sense. The European pack may have been more standard than the Aquatic pack but at that point they needed to do it to finish out the continents. The new exhibit may preview how flight could be handled (or possibly not). I really think now with Conservation and Twilight both being scenery pack they're working extra hard on the December pack to really wow us.
Agreed, I feel that this twilight pack animals re filler animals, they're small and fairly easy to make (of course the bat has completely new rig lol). This makes me think that they are probably preparing for something big on way for this year's winter

Alright if we really are expecting the likes of a bird pack to use these new walkthrough exhibits and maybe just maybe some bigger birds, why not mention aviary dlc ideas. Likely this would be an animal pack that which may include more than one exhibit to branch out to the world of birds, sticking with the usual 8. So everyone , what's your dream aviary pack?
  • Bald Eagle
  • Snowy Owl
  • Kookaburra
  • Roseate Spoonbill
  • Rainbow Lorikeet
  • Scarlet Macaw
  • Southern Ground Hornbill
  • Mallard duck

If we expect aviaries (which I tend to do now), my expectation would be:
  • Blue-and-Yellow Macaw
  • Bald Eagle
  • Toco Toucan
  • Great Indian Hornbill
  • Snowy Owl
  • Eurasian Griffon Vulture
  • Palm Cockatoo
  • Hummingbirds (E)
Perhaps a mechanic for birds could be that they can either be placed inside a walkthrough exhibit or in a habitat. This may also open the way to have some other exhibit species (fruit bat, iguanas) as optional habitat species at some point. I am aware that this is wild thinking though.

Given we've just had 2 scenery packs in a row and shaking things up, what do people reckon are the chances of getting a Big animal pack for the December one? Like 7 Habitat species + 5 Exhibit/Walkthrough Exhibit animals, for a total of 12?

Might be a good way to bump up the number of flying animals in the game's roster?

That's actually a good idea, yeah maybe that's an option considering we have scenery packs twice now along with the huge abundance of bird options could increase the size.

I'm really think decemeber will be a big dlc maybe or birds or a big dlc with like the most wanting animal for the game like tassie devil, maned wolf, crested porcupine, sloth and more and maybe another animal for the new exhibit maybe flying bird? or maybe also fish? cause look in conservation pack we got the brachiation and twilight pack we getting flying animal the only thing that missing is fish or fully aquatic animal .who know, what good about the date of this dlc is the fact that probably in 2 months we should get news for the winter dlc and also maybe a Anniversary something? I'm think it going to be 3 months of crazy content!

I think frontier is preparing something bigger. They wouldnt just invite voice actors to studio after 3 years for random twilight pack. Official post mentions Nancy Jones and possibly Dominic Myers so new scenario has voice over.
Maybe December DLC has few new career scenarios in it?

Edit :Or there is no voice over, but new letter system.

Yeah a new letter system means the voice actors aren't being used in the new career scenario. But definitely something interesting for the winter dlc whatever that may be , birds or not

I don't know if I would like bigger birds being "exhibit" animals (because the new exhibit is still quite small for birds like vultures or eagles).
I would split it into smaller birds for exhibit/aviaries and the ones for habitat-aviaries (if we ever get them):

Exhibit:
  • Zebra finch
  • Red-crowned parakeet
  • Sociable weaver
  • Cockatiel
  • Budgerigar
  • Little owl
  • Barn owl
  • Common kingfisher

Habitat:
  • Bald eagle
  • Golden eagle
  • White-tailed eagle
  • Kea
  • Common raven
  • Southern yellow-billed hornbill
  • Red-and-green macaw
  • Hyacinth macaw

Ah I forgot to clarify, big birds along with typical waterfowl/waders would be habitat birds considering real zoos have big aviaries for these. Smaller birds like say the kookaburra, typical free flight small birds and smaller owls could go on exhibit

I remember seeing an eagle exhibit at Tampa zoo (Lowry park) a few years back and yeah it was really small but the eagle couldn't fly as it was rescued or something. This was the first time seeing a bald eagle and didn't leave a great impression, Although thankfully Florida has plenty wild ones not far out of reach.

After small bat research it completly makes sense to me why egyptian fruit bat is exhibit animal.
I suppose being able to navigate on land is very important in being habitat species. It would be very pathetic to see it slowly crawl on land. Also it appears most bats cant take off from ground (only small precentage can like vampire bat)
Small + cant actually walk + this species possibly cant take flight from ground

In contrast majority of birds are very mobile and can take flight in seconds.

I've seen a walktrough habitat with Seba's short-tailed bats....and they were extremely fast in landing somewhere and taking off again....

I didn't post here yet because for me during the announcement day we should focus on what was announced. I've been reading now the 10 pages and I have to say that I'm not conviced at all that the winter DLC is going to be birds.

We already have flamingoes and cranes in the game, and their space requirements are bigger than the space provided by the new walk-through exhibit box. We would need to get larger WE for the large birds. And what would happen to the flamingo and the crane? Would they be converted into exhibit animals? Or will they be denied the chance to fly? The new exhibit type could work for small birds, but let's be honest, the aviary pack that most people are waiting for is a pack with eagles, condors, pelicans, owls, toucans, vultures, cranes, flamingoes... and some small birds too, but not only small birds.

I do think however that the new walking exhibit is a test and there are plans to develop it more in the future. What for? Who knows! Maybe sloths, maybe butterflies (now that there's an automatic population management butterflies are more likely) and maybe small birds too. But the winter DLC is going to be released in less than 2 months, so it is probably already half made and all the decissions must be already taken. There's no way that the results and feedback from the test can be implemented already in the next pack.

After the aquatic pack, we got the SEA pack with NO aquatic animal. They had to take into account our feedback for the next update and future diving animals. Thanks to our feedback the water became clearer so that we could actually see the animals underwater. The deep requirements were also adjusted. After adding brachiation in the last pack with an enrichment item instad of free-roaming brachiation, they didn't add more brachiating animals in the following pack. They probably wanted to know if we were satisfied with the wayit works. So I think the same is going to happen with the new exhibit style. They are going to wait for our feedback before developing it further, so that won't happen for this Christmas.

Of course I could be wrong, but I don't think that the new exhibit confirms birds for the winter DLC. I'm leaning more towards an Islands animal pack with many high popular mammals like the devil, fossa and walrus to end the year with a pack that most people will be happy about.

However, the good thing is that now we have brachiation and walking exhibits to be developed, so I'm convinced that we are getting more packs in 2023.

This is what I'm trying to get at aswell, there is no definite reason for birds to be included this year despite the obvious bat flying mechanics. My current static avaries in my Oregon zoo build are utterly massive, I mean the largest is 20 x 15 wall lengths so yeah that's way way bigger than this whole process walkthrough exhibits which are fine for bats but birds? Even tiny birds like say lorikeets have a decent sized walkthrough aviary.

I think everyone is forgetting about flamingos and cranes being birds in the game. Did we forget birds like emu, spoonbills, ibis, sandhill cranes etc exist? These kind of birds would work in current habitats and don't really fly at all in zoos

I'm not sure I understand habitat birds argument completely.

Is it automatically assumed that Flamingoes, Cranes and Peafowls will gain flight whenever we get an Aviary DLC? Or that any future big birds after potential Aviary DLC like Pelicans will fly?

Cause I don't think that will happen. Also I don't believe that should happen. Bigger birds should continue like they were and smaller should be confined to aviaries.

They're kept in open habitats in real zoos. For this reason or another, but I see no reason for us to change that in game.

I'm aware that they fly in wild, but I don't think we should replicate every wild behavior 1 for 1 in game, but rather shoot for practicality and aesthetics.

I hope we don't see flying flamingos at all, I have never seen flamingos in flight at any zoo I have visited. Yes in the wild but zoos ensure these kind of open top habitat birds stay grounded
