Are FDev still optimizing Odyssey? Or is this it?

Anyone have experience with G-Sync monitors? I'm on or near 60 FPS most of the time, but with occasional dips into the 40s and 50s. I hate tearing so I have VSync on, but then there's the stuttering, which is ugly in its own way. Just wondering if a G-Sync monitor would help to make it smoother when that happens, or if they don't play well with Elite.

well after a year on my old rig getting dips to even 10 fps, i got a totally new rig (5800x, RTX3070) and i still get dips to 30~35 fps on stations
the same machine that can handle red dead redemption 2 on ultra, or any other shooter really(actually my old notebook still could handle them, but couldn't handle odyssey)

if "this is it", it is such a shame, i'll be happy if they do optimize (even if one update now takes 2~3 months to come out), but still, it is a flippin' shame that, after a year and a half, the expansion still performs differently on tons of machines, and poorly even on a 3070, there's something substantially wrong with odyssey, or frontier itself

I am a bit curious what the new Thargoids are going to look like when they arrive...
I expect simple re-skinning of human on-foot puppets with a sort of Giger-style suit. OP as frak, of course. Probably the shield glows green instead of blue. They'll rope down from scouts in AX on-foot CZs. And that'll be it for Oddy content. For space, I guess an inflated interceptor as mothership, if anything at all.
If anything more comes along, I'd be pleasantly surprised.

I run the same configuration and I get 90-100 FPS @ 1440p / ultra.

that i can get on the blackness of space no problem. what is weird is that, i got into the space station with no major issues(still dropframes but acceptable ones id say)
i went to the elevator, to the concourse, the drop was significant but above 50~i wouldnt mind much, when i came back to the ship it dropped even further to the 30's

so yeah, something is wrong, and it can't be normal to drop so much on that RIG, even on 2k
To me, there's something substantially wrong with most of people, you know...
people were always weird, nowadays we who expected what was advertised, are the weirdest of them all

Yes, but we are discussing Odyssey here, not other people.
It really is strange that on more powerful PCs there is such a diversity in performance. I don't think players can do anything about it at this point so FDev is the only one who can help now.

There's nothing wrong with the team assigned to Elite. The problem is that the company FDev, doesn't assign enough people and resources on Elite itself. Because it's not a cash cow like the rest of their portfolio.

one of the major points in the beginning was that, there were 3090 (i kid you not, i`ve seen that) struggling with odyssey, and a few inside-the-required-specs pcs running it "well" above 60's for the most part, which was, and still is, quite weird. and it still does work like this for some till today(although some claims that runs "fine" at 20fps, so eh)

fast forward to today, not my old machine(which could get 120fps on horizons at most, if not all times) nor my new one are free from odyssey special treatment

edit: before someone quotes me with "but ain't about the fps tho" it is not about the numbers, you can feel the drops and the stutters when it happens, fps are just for a bit of measure to the conversation to flow.
if it was stable at 60 i wouldnt care less, my favorite game is locked at 60, my old monitor was at 60, and i`ve used 60 for my entire life, just now i got a 165hz monitor for the first time, and not even all games will take advantage of that and i'm cool with it.

I never claimed there was something wrong with the team. I know what the culprit is - lack of resources on FDev side. That's why I said that it's only FDev that can help us here.

I am trying to raise awareness that till this day (after 516 days of realeasing the "final" product) there are high-end PCs struggling with Odyssey while otehr games are running without a hitch. And it's not like one type of GPU/CPU is affected, I see many complaints from users running all kinds of HW components.

That was all.

Sorry, I know, I didn't mean to say you were.

I meant to say that we should focus on FDev lack of investment in Elite, which is the cause of ALL problems we have right now (performances, bugs, designs, etc.).

I feel like we're wasting our energy being divided as a community by arguing on different topics. 🤔

You can say that again.
Unfortunately, the only official way on how to raise complaints is the Issue tracker and that is a disaster on its own. To me it's just a way how to sweep everything under the rug.

It seems yelling in forums might be the only viable way how to get FDev's attention.

I mean it did work in the past for a few things so who knows... maybe if enough people just say "Yes, I have this problem" or "No, I'm lucky not to have this issue" that would be enough.
But I guess that would also mean there would have to be an active CM here in the forums. And judging from the "Dev post" tags in the past few months here they left as well.
So much for improving the communication with fan base.

If this was my company I would just abandon Elite. The poor reviews, the performance and the bugs just show that there is no point investing more time and money in it.

It would be a shame because I actually like Odyssey, have good performance and don't care about most bugs. But apparently I am alone with that view. So why should they put more effort on a product that is universally hated?

I think most people like Elite and even Odyssey. The only fact they hate is that it's still unfinished and riddled with bugs. However, that is not the players' fault.

If FDev added more resources to the game and fixed it properly for most of the players (by that I mean really fixing it, not getting it to a minimum viable state) then I'm sure people would get back to it. I know I would love to play some nice high intensity CZs in 90+ fps.

But it's a cursed circle - they won't add resources to the game because players don't like it and players don't like it because there are too few people working on the game atm.

The game sits at a rating of 3.5/10 and that's not going to change any time soon.

Obviously FDEV is to blame for the poor release and the issues that still exist today, but if they didn't manage to significantly increase their rating after 13 updates there is no way any sane manager would throw more money at it. The only reason we get updates is because it's still Braben's baby.

By the way, I would give the game a good review but I can't because I got it as part of my LEP.

The situation isn't helped by the EDO expansion not selling well enough to pay for its development (because, on release it performed dreadfully, even on well specced PCs) and being 'written off' this year by Frontier.

I'd guess that the 'team' working on ED these days is in low single figures (it is a guess, nothing more) just because Frontier's board are not going to waste more money trying to drag the game from the doldrums.

Other topics on EDO have people hoping for a further expansion - EDO lost money, a lot of money - it isn't going to get even more thrown at it.

I guess it comes down to PR. Elite is more a sort of marketing asset to them than anything else.

I would too, it has kept me occupied for over 5 years, and EDO suits me and how I like to play.
I don't use steam to launch (all Frontier launchers bar the Epic one) but if things were different, I'd at least give an honest review - the pros & cons... But it would be overall good, just because I keep playing it.

I don't have any hardware G-sync displays, but I have used VESA Adaptive-Sync (aka software G-Sync Compatible or FreeSync, depending on GPU branding) on both NVIDIA and AMD GPUs with the game and it works as expected...i.e. it removes tearing and the stutter associated with conventional vsync when there are occasional dips below the displays normal refresh rate. Howerver, it cannot mask serious dips, especially ones that would take frame times above the VRR maximum.
