Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

Yes the wiki is produced by players and since Fandom became even more monetised since its 2018 takover I really don't like using it. However, most of the detailed knowledge we have about the game has come from player research as F D don't give a hoot about passing on details beyond what is in the API. So there are things in the wiki which annoy the heck out of me but that is mainly presentation, factual errors tend to get pounced on and corrected.

HGE always need a parent faction because it is the faction state that governs what "can" be in that signal source. Since a faction's "sphere of influence" is limited to being within the system in which that faction state exists it therefore follows that there cannot be any HGEs generated in empty / non-populated systems.

This is not to say that there might well have been or still are some bugs which have caused spurious generation of HGEs in empty systems - Elite after all is famous for bugs.

So, next time you come across a HGE signal source in an empty system, do take a screenshot and post it here.
Will do.

Found an interesting little moon with geysers and fumaroles on it and found a new (to me) plant growing on the fumaroles, looked like a sort of lily.

I recalled the dang ship inside a large crater I was exploring with a very nice flat bottom dissected by a low ridge and damned if the ship's AI didn't land dead center on it.

There is always an alternative that maybe you could help with (I don't know if it is being worked on now as it seems to have stalled at release 1.5):

My thing is that I hate wiki software in general. It's very tedious to work with and completely counter intuitive to a production based environment.

I actually had the same exact wiki software and template that fandom uses installed at first, but holy cow that junk is SO hard to work with. Nothing works right.

My idea was to run it based on web content layout via Wordpress and then anybody that wanted to contribute would simply fill out a request form and I'd add them as an author.

Then the authors could add, edit and update any post in any category as they wished. Like a wiki but just web authors instead of that ridiculous wiki software.

I edited my post to clarify that I of course meant unpopulated systems which ED calls Anarchy. (I don't know why they changed that - one or the other used to be called lawless IIRC)

You might be remembering incorrectly or at least remembering from before 2016, I don’t recall seeing Lawless applied to systems just as an alternative to Clean and Wanted when scanning anyone in a populated Anarchy or in a first discovery unpopulated system out in the black. In the latter case you see it if you target your ship from the SRV.

The I part of AI in regard to our ships is generally considered to be a gross exaggeration.

Ok, I've finally managed to get to grade 5 with Felicity Farseer for FSD jump range on the Dolphin and completed all the modifications. I've also applied the mass manager experimental effect to each grade level, but the jump range has only got as high as 47.47lys unladen.

@Ashnak I used your loadout that you posted here quite a few pages back, but I'm wondering how were able to get a jump range of 232lys unladen. Have I applied the wrong experimental effects? Thanks!

That's as good as it gets for a 4A FSD. Ashnak is talking about star boost jumping, which is risky as hell. It's not something you're going to ever get as a default on a ship.

The best distance from an FSD you're ever going to get right now is around 80 LY and that's in an Anaconda on a type 6 FSD with the ship completely stripped of anything else worth having.

I'm perfectly content in my Krait Phantom with a 73 LY range...especially now that I have my Fleet Carrier.

Ah ok, I understand. I guess you mean the neutron star temporary jump range boost? I don't fancy trying that one anyway for the reasons you mentioned. Thanks!

I just took my Asp X over to Farseer Inc to see what the lady could do with that one re jump range, but for some reason, even though I got to grade 5 with the Dolphin and completed all that I could with her on the jump range front and still have all the required materials for another ship, couldn't get any further than grade 2 with her with the Asp. Got a message about "not enough engineer reputation" or something...

Maybe she'd like another 10 million quid's worth of exploration data perhaps? Dunno!

Whatever, I'm now about to embark on another lengthy exploration trip in the Dolphin, with her 47LY jump range, leaving the bubble and turning right to head quite a long way east-north-east-ish, following the spiral arm where hopefully stars will be fairly closely packed together all the way. Was a 10,000LY round trip for that one I did in the Asp X so I'll see if I can beat that this time. We'll see...

Rumours have it that the "A" in AI stands for "average"...

I think someone mentioned it a few pages back already - what is shown here under "total unladen" is a theoretical value for a maximum range until all the fuel in the tank is used up, no refuelling. The unladen single maximum jump for this build (starting with a full tank) is listed as 39.9 ly, jumping "on fumes", i.e. arrive with an empty tank, can get you 42.7 ly.
So, you seemed to have gotten everything right.

Doing the neutron dance will quadruple your single jump range, so that's just shy of 160 ly for this build. Pity that the only neutron star in/near the bubble is Jackson's Lighthouse. Otherwise, you'll need to travel around 10 kly corewards to find the neutron fields. Downsides are, of course, a small amount of damage to your FSD for each boosted jump, and a good chance of dying for each mistake you make...
