1.1 collision damage

It's a "sim" in the loosest way possible. You know this argument is terrible, why press it?
Because, if "In real life" is no longer an argument, then ships can explode at any damn velocity they please.

Also, I think people don't quite appreciate just how fast 100 m/s actually is for a vehicle to hit a solid, massive object.

Uh....okey? what makes you say that? since you know, I am just wondering now, what is a true sim to you?

There is no way from a sim, or non-sim standpoint that the collision in 1.1 is acceptable. It's clearly broken..

I understand that 100 m/s is faster than it "appears" in the game, but the game needs to be playable from a gameplay standpoint..it has to make sense, it is a game afterall.

Remember, this is the year 2379
The Enterprise doesn't explode and we are about a 1000 years more advanced at this point

Probably not one with FTL travel, laser/plasma weapons, magical shield barriers, etc.

But you know what, let's pretend you're right for argument's sake, how is scraping the side of your ship on something and exploding instantly at all realistic?

So you're saying there's an arbitrary ruleset in place? Fine. In this ruleset, ships explode when they hit an extremely large object at 100 m/s. Humorously (though completely irrelevant) not unlike real life. Heh.

Yes it is. Elite was and is the definitive space sim.
No its not. Even Kerbal Space Program is more of a sim than this game. Simulators embrace realism, there is little to none realism in Elite: Dangerous. Thus there should be no reason to try and embrace realism and in doing so ruin the gameplay experience for most of the playerbase.

You're all wrong ;)

Look, it's NOT a sim in the sense that it's an accurate simulation of actual space travel or combat. We could list thousands of ways that these things wouldn't take place.

But it's NOT a game in the sense that "anything goes" and the only thing that matters is my pewpewpews work the way I expect them to and screw logic.

It's a sim-like game that strives for internal consistency the way good science fiction should. Science fiction having a rather broad definition depending on who you ask, ranging from 2001 to Star Wars.

When people call it a sim, I think they do so with that stipulation in mind, personally. At least I do.

Also, if collision damage is borked, I'm sure it's already noted and being worked on.

Agree 100%

Space flight simulator game

....
Space trading and combat game

The general formula for the space trading and combat game,[9][10][11][12] which has changed little since its genesis, is for the player to begin in a relatively small, outdated ship with little money or status and for the player to work his or her way up, gaining in status and power through trading, exploration, combat or a mix of different methods.[13][14][15] The ship the player controls is generally larger than that in pure space combat simulator. Notable examples of the genre include Elite, Wing Commander: Privateer, and Freelancer.

It's a space sim. Have a nice day.

People bought this game because they liked Elite and Frontier, in those games you didnt pop like a pinata when you had a mild rub against someone, with the idiotic AI deciding kamikazi is the way to go, i wont be surprised, if this isnt fixed, being the death toll for the game. You say drive properly, well in that case i say 3 things, 1) massive AI adjustment, so theyre not making the insides of a spaceport like a giant pinball machine, 2) get rid of the cattle grid, and make the door opening round, this is because some players dont have the accuracy of rotation that a joystick can bring, rotating to match the door can be a little finicky and with this, your going to pop when entering any station, 3) Give people 30 mins to get in and out of stations, because queues can already stack up pre 1.1, blocking the exit to the point of needing to shoulder some ships out of the way.

Bigger ships are going to be pointless while this is in play, and i for 1 will not be logging in till a patch fixes the problem, i suggest all who feel the same also refuse to log in, see who likes things the way they are

So you're just going to pretend the near game breaking, confirmed glitch where if you slightly scrape your ship you explode instantly doesn't exist? We just pretending like bug that isn't there so you can make a bad argument?

Why is there still a discussion here?
Shouldn't we all be settled with that this is a major bug and that frontier needs to fix it?
I mean who in the world likes this addotion to the game?

Actually, I just watched your video. You were going over 100 m/s when you died. In real life, what happens when a car or a plane crashes into a building at 100 m/s (223 miles per hour, 360 kilometers per hour)?

I wonder if there's a space equivalent of Driver's Ed or Flight School.

It get SCRATCHED, it doesn't EXPLODE, we're not in a Michael Bay movie !
My hull can resist hundreds and hundreds of very high caliber bullets, cannon shells, missiles, dropping at the speed of light with "minor" damage.... But in NO WAY whatsoever should I slighlty grind against a surface WITH MY SCI FI SPACE MAGIC SHIELD STILL ON or I'll blow up ?!

When you can't argue, quote Wikipedia. Well done.

YES, BECAUSE WIKIPEDIA HAS FACTS, AND YOU KNOW WHAT AN ARGUMENT NEEDS, FACTS, CITATIONS !

I haven't been this angry at an internet argument since Tumblr tried to take control, so much nonsense !

Tbh, I've rammed my Type 9 in excess of 100m/s into the slot and into the landing pad since 1.1 and haven't gotten as much as a scratch. So, gamebreaking, idk. I do find the whole thing hilarious though.

Dang... i wish the Germans made my T9... i don't dare even log into the game right now in fear of paying out 8mill insurance because an NPC orca bumps me. No thank you. I'll wait for a ninjapatch to swoop in and save the day.

As we all know, space ships are made out of potassium nitrate, and since this is a "SIM" it's just being realistic. Duh.
