2.2 Building the Neutron Highway Grid

UPDATE : November 3302

I'm no longer updating this thread or adding neutron highway routes to the Galactic Map.

The several routes that were manually plotted during the early days of neutron superhighways will remain on the maps for posterity and historical reasons, but a tool is now available that no longer requires manual route creation :-

Introducing the Neutron Highway Long Range Route Planner - by Spansh

Spansh's Route Plotter is now replacing the manual charting process. His route plotter is a fantastic tool that will save commanders a lot of time in charting routes.

Full Details : Here.

I'll leave the rest of the original post and concept of the neutron grid here for archival purposes only...

Neutron grid concept (August 3302 - November 3302)...

The Neutron Highway Grid :

What is the neutron highway grid?

It is a network of charted and optimized routes that contain a high percentage of neutron stars and white dwarfs along the route; systems that temporarily allow ships to supercharge their FSD via the neutron jet streams.
These highways are a means for ships to traverse large distances between two set locations using far less jumps than the conventional method.

Are these routes faster than regular travel?

This really depends on the individual. Everyone has their own techniques when doing the hyperspace grind. Some are more proficient at the 'buckyball method' of traveling and using the map, where others are more cautious and methodical in their approach. Travel times can vary greatly depending on the player. For this reason it is proposed that neutron travel routes should be judged by the number of jumps they save in total, compared to the number that regular travel would take - and not based solely on the time it takes for individuals to traverse them. Looking at the number of jumps saved, and comparing it to your own experience, proficiency, and method of fast travel, should give you an idea of whether the route will benefit you or not.

But for an example, it has been proved that a 33 LY ship can travel almost 5,000 LYs in less than 90 minutes using a pre-defined route (see linked video below). This shaved around 1 hour off the conventional travel method for a ship of that range across that kind of distance. But this does not mean that everyone will experience the same results. As I say, a whole lot of other variables need to be taken in to account.

What are the dangers?

Neutron travel can be deadly if you drop out of supercruise inside the neutron jet. This can occur by accident (pressing the drop out key bind by mistake), or by misjudging your position relative to the neutron star and hitting the automatic drop out zone while supercharging. You can avoid this 99% of the time if you zero your throttle during the hyperspace sequence toward a NS. You can also avoid being 'sucked into the drop out zone' by immediately turning away from the neutron star upon hyperspace exit, and gliding into the far edge of the NS plume to supercharge where you should have sufficient distance to ride the jet and exit the plume safely. But remember nothing is 100% safe with neutron skimming!

If you lose connection inside a neutron jet, do not log back in! Submit a ticket to game support and they will investigate your net log activity, if you genuinely lost connection, they will move you to a safe system (this info is based on forum comments circa Oct 2015). Alternatively you can attempt to low-wake out of the jet by selecting a celestial object within the system and initiating supercruise (this avoids the need to align-to-target 'high-wake' method, which is virtually impossible while caught in the turbulence of a neutron jet).

Other things to watch out for are FSD damage. Supercharging can damage your FSD and this damage mounts up. It is recommend to drop out of SC (away from a NS jet), and repair your FSD when it drops below 90% integrity.
Don't leave home without an AFMU if you intend to use the neutron grid!

Also be wary of 'continuous neutron hopping' - i.e. jumping from neutron to neutron and forgetting to hit a regular star once in a while to refuel!

Creating a route :

At around 6,000 LYs from Sol, and between 1,000 and 1,500 LYs below the galactic plane, a layer of neutron systems can be located. The closer to the galactic core you travel, the denser this layer becomes - making neutron hopping more and more viable the further coreward you go.

The 'Goldilocks' zone for creating a network grid of neutron highways, starts around 6,000 LYs from Sol and stretches all the way to the outer galactic core. Closer than 6K from Sol and the density of neutrons is not sufficient enough to make optimal routes, so the time investment does not pay off. Beyond the outer galactic core, neutrons are abundant all the way to the far edge of the far galactic core, so conversely, there is no reason to create routes when you can practically find them everywhere in those locations.

If you are thinking of creating a route, and want it linking up to the neutron grid, the intermediate galactic arms are the prime locations to do so.

To submit your own route, please use the convention listed in the ones posted above, and post it to this thread. Your route should be hidden behind a spoiler tag or posted on a view-only google doc with link provided.

Demonstrating the Neutron Highway :

FAO : Frontier Devs.

From feedback mentioned by others on this project, and from experience of almost 500 neutron jumps during beta and live 2.2 game play, the ideas I'd urge you to pursue would be :

  • Allow players to share their routes in game. Let us export and import bookmarks, and whole pre-bookmarked routes that others have created. This would allow us to build a database of optimized routes and have them archived somewhere.
  • Allow the route plotter to only consider a user-highlighted pre-bookmarked route when plotting. That way we could import a route, automatically plot it, and use it without having to cut and paste waypoints from these google docs.
  • Consider making the boost ranges dependent on the stellar makeup of each individual neutron star / white dwarf. Some being more energetic than others. Set the range between 250% and 500%, with 500% being very rare. This encourages more thinking when charting routes, and gives explorers a chance to discover some very useful and unique neutron systems out there.

For archive purposes, the original thread text from August 2016 is here...
Frontier have announced a new feature that could fundamentally change how long distant travel works in ED.

From 2.2, neutron stars are not only getting a graphical makeover but they will now be able to super charge a ships FSD to give it a one off massive jump boost. This comes at great risk though, as it means you have to supercruise through the intense magnetic fields while your FSD is charging, so there is a risk involved for pilots that attempt it.

What this means is its now possible for explorers to start piecing together a travel grid around the Galaxy by pinpointing neutron stars around the outer galactic arm regions.

The Galactic Mapping team has began marking these jump points on the maps, and over time a neutron highway grid will be pieced together.

Update Sept. 3302:

The mapping team are tasking Colonia residents, or explorers from the bubble, to look for neutron stars and/or white dwarfs along the following routes :

  • Colonia to Hyponia
  • Colonia to The Fallows
  • Colonia to The Bubble (suspended)

The stipulations for the Highway Grid Project are :

  • Neutron/White Dwarfs must be beyond 500 LYs of Jaques station.
  • Submitted systems must be within one of the shaded corridors - post which route your system belongs to (Hyponia/The Fallows/Bubble).
  • Only systems that haven't already been submitted on the tables below will be added.

Neutron Stars

Headed back to the bubble in a neutron start bee line. Will gather neutron stars along the way. My guess on how far a 'supercharged' jump will take you is somewhere between 3-20 times your normal range, and more closer to 3 knowing the sadistic nature of ED. I would like 20 times though :).

Edit: Please note that by adding neutron stars to this post, I claim none of the systems entered if contended, not even systems tagged by me or CMDR Flirble Rasok in the badge contest :)

For those who never caught today's Gamescon livestream, Frontier have announced a new feature that could fundamentally change how long distant travel works in ED.

Risk v Reward... Finally !

What this means is its now possible for explorers to start piecing together a travel grid around the Galaxy by pinpointing neutron stars around the outer galactic arm regions.

The Galactic Mapping team will begin marking these jump points on the maps, and over time a neutron highway grid will be pieced together - allowing for quicker travel around the Galaxy for those that want to risk neutron star skimming.

Obviously this all depends on how big a jump this mechanic allows, but if it's in the region of 100 LYs per jump, this neutron grid will become a godsend for players wanting to ferry goods from the bubble to the coming outer colonies (for example).

If players heading out to Jaques can pinpoint neutron stars along the route, please post them on this thread, and the mapping team will start collating the information in readiness for 2.2.

very cool...I will work on looking for neutrons when I get out to Jaques

Frawd

If anything it will make long distance travels like from Sol to Jacques a bit easier. I wouldn't use it to jump to a remote and inaccessible location though as without another neutron star there it means getting stuck. Although I'd probably sacrifice a run just to see something remote like the Lemon Slice Nebula even if it means self-destruction and no tagging. Expensive photo opportunities. :D

That's funny. I could swear this was the forum with oodles of explorers complaining about how simple and dumbed down travel is, and how it is ridiculous that you can get from the bubble to Sag A* in just a few hours. And now they are making it even easier to go long distances?

If you have to charge your drive while in the hot bit of a neutron star, you're not going to be able to do this very much on an exploration trip before running out of heat sinks.

I expect it will be mainly used by in-bubble people to catapult themselves off Jackson's Lighthouse and save them a few on the Sothis/Maia/Robigo hauls.

I don't subscribe to that line of logic. I don't get my highs on adrenaline hits. I don't want to be scared, spooked, and most especially stressed to find enjoyment. Elite is escapism. As long as it allows for all kinds of gameplay and all kinds of gamer's tastes, it's fine. The logic that it has to impose a restrictive regime via fear/stress/angst/whatever to everyone, because reasons, is fallacious.

Yes, very cool twist there! Here's the link to that part of the stream for anyone who hasn't seen it yet:

...supercruise through the intense magnetic fields while your FSD is charging...
From the stream I didn't understand that the 'super-charging' would necessarily need to take place while your drive is charging. Having to plot your jump during that short time-slot could become difficult - maybe a challenge? Anyhow, did I miss some info there?

The introduction of Jumponium, then engineered FSDs, has pretty much dumbed distant travelling down as far as it can go at this point. That battle was lost a long time ago. At least with this latest attempt by FD to make traveling the distant Galaxy more accessible has an element of risk involved... Or so we're told. If the reward is proportionate to the risk one takes, it's a far better idea than the two jump mechanics that preceded it. Pity they didn't follow that policy from the beginning though.

Jumponium I was fine with - a now and then thing that you have available when really needed. As it is, sometimes. On my current (well, sort of current, those Olympic games have got in the way) expedition I have had to use jumponium a handful of times to reach places I could not otherwise reach. But, yes, the battle was lost even before the game was declared GA. So sad.

Yes: Risk and reward as a mechanic is so much better, in general. But if the risk is damage you can easily repair, then it is hardly a risk. And if it is damage you cannot repair, then the explorer out in the deep will only take that risk if they are absolutely desperate.

For now I think we have to do a bit of "wait and see" regarding how the new neutron-boost mechanic is implemented... I anticipate that we could have the mapping project drowned in neutron star submissions - they are not that rare and also possible to filter using the in game map. If we take it upon ourselves to add a neutron highway grid to the galactic mapping project it should be because there turns out to be a limited number of distinct routes that offer consideral advantages to explorers. If not we risk drowning the map in routes and ourselves in the workload... thus diminishing the effort we can spend on adding distinct locations and discoveries to the map.

One of the things I love in this game is the epicness of the galaxy. You feel tiny, alone and fragile out there. Jumponium or even engineers made travel a bit faster, but it still requires some effort. If you can make a highway and will be able to do a DW expedition in an afternoon, then deep space exploring will be too watered down to feel great anymore. Let's see how they implement it before crying out loud, of course. Same with the ship recall... the ones that will be smiling most I think it will be griefers and "the second bubble" will be like an extension the of the first one, not something special like I hoped it to be.

OTOH... good news! with the superjump we will open the door to a possible jump to the satellite galaxies of the Milky Way and later on to Andromeda (wich I doubt it will happen).

One small step for FD, one giant leap for CMDR's.

FD must have realized that the bubble#2 wouldn't be viable without faster means of getting there, especially for CMDR's with lesser playtime. I would not be surprised if wormhole travel will be possible some day to further lower the barrier of travel.

PS: And would someone please wake the mission board server guy.

Who knows, if the second bubble works out, maybe one day there will be something like a jumpgate between the two bubbles.

what I hope is that the new bubble will feature different styles of architecture, possibly be the start of a new culture (a fourth faction?), so that it will actually make you feel like you've travelled some when you arrive there, rather than just have everything the same as the original bubble you left.

That's why I mentioned creating a grid for the outer arms, as a neutron grid becomes meaningless the more coreward one travels due to the sheer number of neutron stars. A route to Jaques, and routes to the non-core permit regions is what this is best suited for.

I'm not sure wormhole travel will ever be implimented. The devs seemed steadfast against it whenever it was suggested in the design discussion days. But I do think this neutron travel idea is the compromise. FD will be adding content to distant permit sectors and want them to be accessible to as many players as possible. Something akin to neutron highways linking them up could be the answer.

@erimus

are you actually sure that mechanic will be bound to neutron stars, not white dwarfes?

for me, the stream isn't very clear about it (but i'm listening to it on my mobile while on a train ... so maybe i miss something more definite?)?

Sandro said both, but mainly spoke about Neutron stars in this contex, and even showed a screenshot of how they'll look in 2.2 (linked on the OP).
