News 2.3 Dev Update

I haven't played any multi player in this game yet, so multi crew doesn't really affect me, but I am interested in the better external camera that was mentioned.

My main concern is crew griefing the helm.

What is preventing someone from joining my ship, Shooting a security vessel, than leaving without a bounty? Or worst, taking my fighter and trying to kill me with it. I know I can boot them but in a combat area it may be too late.

Only thing I can think of is shared insurance costs. I am not sure if that's feasible though.

edit: actually no, obviously they'd just bail before the death

That would be easy to combat though, flag them for the next X amount of minutes even after leaving a multi-crewed ship. Say 5 minutes or so. So should the ship happen to go down due to them flagging it with local security they still get punished for it.

Kinda unimpressed.
Combat oriented.
Nothing for merchants.
Nothing for exploration (helm switching is lazzy, come on)

And let's come backt to combat.
First of all. Ships are thought to be operated by one player. Having a second operate the weapons makes things boring for both. (Flying a large ship yay >.> )
Secondly. Being a passenger on agile ships while operating turrets makes people sick. Check out SWBF2 for more clues.
Thirdly. Turreted weapons already have high accuracy. Why put them in the hands of a player? Machines do it better.
4th on the list. Long term incentives? Players are gonna get bored of the gunner feature rather fast.
5th this just made powerleveling friends easier... Which is nice? Your friend can just afk in your ship hahaha...

What I'd like to know are the reasons on the + side for this kind of feature.

EDIT:

What's the point of a commander creator when you can never see your own commander? xD
You can't walk around. You can't meet people. It tells nothing about you >.>

Another observation? Am I correct in this?

So CMDR X is flying back to Jamesons in his exploration Asp...

One of our much valued gank squads, utilising the deep PvP mechanics/gameplay available, interdicts CMDR X to mindless destroy him for no reason - He's faced with say a 12 player gank squad in 4 engineered ships attacking him of course for some deep and meaningful ingame purpose/outcome.

Anyway, at the end of todays fun and meaningful lolz, the gank squad logs off and for 8 of the CMDRs involved, at the press of a button they don't even have to accept the already petty punishments the game imposes for their activities? ie: Now they face no penalties at all?

But, there is punishments, they are wanted, and have to pay fines, if they don't, they become legacy bounties, and can be added to new bounties later or to their rebuy screen, should they ever die in that wanted system. What other punishment system do you want?? I see that a lot of people complain that these "extra" CMDRs will face no penalties, I don't believe that to be the case. Evan if it is true, why does it even matter? I feel that this argument is petty, and not thought out well. Most people that make it, don't even play in open, nor do you wish to, you claim it's because of "gankers" but, I feel it's do to your own insecurities as a pilot should the rare event ever to occur. I think we can all agree to this, please rethink the argument about no penalties and come back with a better one.

Okay I'm still reading this but I've just got to vomit this out while I've got it on my mind.

Commanders looking to play as crew can either accept direct invites, or activate a new “looking for ship” feature, which will automatically place them as crew on a suitable vessel with multicrew access allowed, making the process quick and painless.

So basically a simple match-making system, and if I want I can just turn on the "Open" sign and get some Randy Rando sitting in my ship with me?

Awesome!

And a little bit terrifying. But awesome. Good thinking on this FDev.

Actually no, that wasn't how it was described.

All non-helmsman will be given the option to dodge any crime penalties when they go back to their own ship, if they also sacrifice any credits they made while they were a crew member. If all you're doing is ganking people then you've basically lost nothing.

Honestly that decision needs to be removed. Let them keep everything, don't even give them the option to dodge bounties. If you got in someone else's ship and they started shooting up the police that's just bad luck. Dip out and find someone else to play with or next time join someone you actually know.

After instant ship transfer Frontier then proceed to repeat that exact same mistake again. What an epic face palm.

One thing I do like though:

<sarcasm>
It's absolutely great that bounties get multiplied for each crew member. I can't wait to have 3 commanders sending me real money to play the game for them, so they can log in, join my uber ship and then go AFK with a small script that keeps their session open, while I print in game credits and combat rank for them. Loving that feature so much, keep up the great work.

Maybe it'll be like in a wing where they have to at least tag the target?

Anything done with multicrew should be available to NPC crew. This not only makes it fairer for solo players, it also makes it fairer for those of us not interested in having other players in our ships (especially those of us living in countries like Australia where p2p and other issues make for bug ridden play).
Also, if the penalties are so lax for players playing as crew, so should they be for the hired crew. Give our NPCs escape pods please.

JOINING AS CREW, how about we do not join as our CMDRs but almost as NPC crew? We can keep our likenesses but we are essentially filling rolls that we assume in the interest of "immersion" are already taken, NPC crew should of course and needs to be implemented ASAP.

We essentially replace an existing roll as if we have been there all along...

For Exploration this is Questionable.

It said that the Gunner will have 360 Degree Scanner Access.
And Rewards will be Duplicated.

So at least for Detailed Surface Scanning of Systems. This might actually come in pretty Handy for Explorers.
Because upon Jumping into the System the Gunner can already Scan the Sun while the Pilot makes the System Scan and starts Heading to the First Planets.
Especially for Gas Giants with Moons this is pretty effective as you can often Scan several things at once thus Speeding up the Scanning quite a bit or even doing Flyby Scans.

It will also allow for some refreshment of Explorers because if they are sitting 10k Ly in the Dark they can join their Friends to participate in Combat etc now and then :p

So it might not be all useless for Explorers ;)

This will be fun from time to time. But for most peaople 'commanders' will be useless addon. I hope at least avatars will show somewhere in coms and new camera system will allow single player to take much better shots than the current awful debug camera.

@Ed, Sandro

Any particular reason why a crew member can not be given access and use of the right hand side systems panel? That would de facto create the Engineer role including the possibility to change energy priorities to modules and to perform repairs if the corresponding field maintenance unit module was installed etc

You mean the engineering task "Self destruction in 5,4,3..." ? :)

If we cannot have NPC multi crew to begin with, I would at least like to have the ability to launch two SLF AND it would be lovely to see those NPCs sat next to me while out of combat.
