News 2.3 Dev Update

To retain immersion, why can't you have the crew have to meet up at the chosen helm,s location using the passanger lounge.

Because nobody would use the feature, if everyone had to jump across the bubble for half an hour, before the can team up...

Nothing against immersion, but sometimes immersion has to make way for convenient gameplay.

This sounds really awesome Ed. :D I especially like the ability to jump into my friends ship and team up quickly and easily without having to deal with some kimd of pointless, arbitrary waiting for waiting's sake.

We are really looking forward to giving this a go when the test goes live. I am often frustrated with some aspects of the game, and it's been a long time since I was actually excited for a new thing in this game but here it is. Good going, FD. :D
Time to get back into the game.

I like this, but I still feel like it could be so much better. Allow me to use Star Citizen as an example and please don't bash it or me. In Star Citizen, you'll be able to crew on ships your entire career. You'll never ever have to fly if you don't want to. I like Elites approach, but can we get an option to have our characters ACTUALLY in the ships as well as the telepresence feature? Picking up a friend at Eravate, who has just got the game and having them become your permanent gunner or fighter would be amazing. It would open up a wide range of different careers! All of a sudden, we can plan expeditions to Colonia, we could finally complete these passenger missions that go to the other side of the galaxy and trading is also a whole lot easier! Not sure what you'd do after the pilot logged off though.

Side note: I thought you could crew 4 friends at once! Isn't there a ship with 4 seats? 3 is such an odd number. I guess 4 is the NPC then??

The turret crew will select targets and all turrets will converge on the target. How does this affect healing beams and fire groups as in this case both healing and normal turrets would fire on wing mates. As for instant telepresence, I supported timed delivery of ships but in this case any such timed delay would make the feature unusable, I recommend just trying not to think about it.

Also NPC multi crew please even if it's just for the fighters. They would be a great advantage yes but they would still be paid and 3 elite NPC crew will take a sizeable chunk of your profits.

In general this seems like a great feature, can't wait.

One last thing, how about a new huge ship to compliment the new multi crew. Panther clipper?

Sounds Great.
PLEASE.
Include that Crewmembers can ALSO Control SRVs from the Mother Vessel!!!!

This would be an great Asset for Exploration!

How Many Combat Drops For You?

I notice one of the features is the ability to launch multiple fighters.

Would the same option be possible for SRVs?

Hey Ed!

Will the Fighter con also apply to SRV control? Or is it SLF only at this point? The idea of joint operation SRV and Air support attacks on large bases seems like fun!

Hey Ed, can we launch SRVs as well, and if so, can we launch them whilst still moving?? as in, like Mass Effect with the Mako?? if this has not been thought of, get it to the engineers stat, because I know of about a few thousand people that want this. I want this, my friends want this, my friends friends want this. Launching SRVs skimming across the ground is a must have! :)

You do want this...;)

Magic transport anywhere... not so sure.

Stop it.
Just Stop.
If you want to meet your friend at the station before you crew up then do it. That was always a feature. Nobody is taking that away from you. If either of you suggest you crew up before both arriving at the same station, you can dismiss the idea and keep flying.

Why it matters to you and your kind what my friends and I do in this game is beyond me. Because we think that it's pretty neat that even though one of us is halfway across the galaxy he could join us for some classic RES hunting again. That seems like a well earned break from the monotony.

So you go ahead and do your thing. I'm sure you're perfectly capable of looking at the galaxy map and determining whether or not you're in the same station as someone else without Frontier holding your hand and making it a requirement.

If you're worried about your immersion breaking, think about the fact that lore wise, most ships actually have crew already. All this is, your friend, roleplaying as one of the crew you already had. You cant even say "but they don't look like my crew" because you've literally never seen your crew before.

This is the very crux of the huge problem that Elite Dangerous has going on right now: Frontier has spent so many point updates adding combat mechanics and giving combat players content that it is the only aspect of the game with enough actual frackin gameplay to allow multicrew to have anything to do with it. Exploration and trading just don't have enough mechanics or features to give crews anything to bloody do in the seats of the ships. That's not because exploration and trading couldn't have any use for multicrew (there are tons of possible ways both could utilize multicrew), it's simply because Frontier haven't bothered to DO anything with exploration and trading over the course of the past two years. They've stagnated to the point of not having any actual gameplay mechanics, where as their baby darling combat does. And so here we are. Again. Frackin again.

You are right, it is absurd. And it's tiring, and frustrating. But it was predictable, and even expected. And that is oh so sad for a game with over 400 billion star systems to explore.

Actually, it might be even more selective a feature than just for combat. For many people, if not most, combat is an occasional thing that happens on interdiction or possibly in a mission or for an hour or so credit farming at a RES. The rest of the time these people are flying somewhere, delivering something, collecting mats or maybe mining. Being a crew member would probably become rather dull at these times. It could become only interesting in a RES, CZ or shooty CG and against NPC's would become pretty boring too because they will be a push over when you have the three extra pips.

For PvP it adds to the rock, paper scissors as you now have to take into account how many crew members your target has assuming there is any way to tell.

To be honest Mengy, the writing on the wall occurred with Engineers and the beta for weapon balancing. Personally I stopped playing then though by way of contradiction spend all my time in CQC instead.

OK, a few random thoughts over breakfast.

Magic teleporting vs meet up: If the point is to fly with friends, you probably already do so via wings. So, why is it such a chore to treat it like forming a wing? You are friends, you already fly together. I don't wing-up at all so I don't know if folks generally tour the galaxy together, but that is probably what I'd do, making the need for magic redundant.

Mainly for the pewpew: This update is so far very combat centric. To avoid all the mess with responsibilities for shooting up stations and being an assassin gunner etc, why isn't MC just implemented in Arena? That would inject Arena with a new lease of life, you can get your pewpew instant gratification on anytime you want and, because it is out of the main game, there are no issues with magic teleporting or C&P etc. Think of it as visiting the Arcade when docked at a station.

Hitchikers: I don't get how folks would allow randoms on to their crew. You wouldn't pick up a hitchhiker from the side of the road and let him start playing with the radio and heating controls, would you? Trust no one.

I think you can just allow your friends you want on your ship, I think it is fine as defined.

Agreed. Imagine crewing up and then your friend decides, "Hey, I want to get fined 5million credits for rejecting a mission, then open fire on all these civilians". Maybe you're telling him, "wait no, I don't want to pay that". Well, now you get to decide if you want to accept responsibility and keep your vouchers, or just wipe your hands clean of the whole experience. There is a matchmaking element, and I have a lot of money. I promise you that if players are stuck with the crime, I will play out that exact scenario with randoms, and laugh maniacally the entire time. Frontier will receive complaints daily from people who crewed with me, so if that's really what they want... so be it.

Up to here it looks like to be as expected.
Fully combat oriented update. Which is mainly to enable even more battles
and promotes willingness to battle.

Multiplying the combat rewards? Why? It should be handled like wings just
because this will kill the wings for economic reasons after base wealth has
been established and this is no problem today.

Reducing the rebuy? Why? In my eyes a ship in size of a USS Nimitz should
have a significant rebuy. Better the rebuy would be shared amongst the crew
therefore it is reduced by the individual but stays as it is in size.

Beside this (up to now) now game content found. Hope for more which gives
some candy for those not relating to combat.

Regards,
Miklos

This is a good idea
Crew 1 additional mining lazer
Crew 2 could fly a new internal ship collector

Even if the crew member could pilot the limpet drone that could be entertaining enough for someone.
Also the class 3 controllers allow two limpets so, two crew members could control one each.
And if a pirate rocks up, change to gunner mode and open him up like a can of baked beans :D

I think the drop-in, drop-out co-op is great. It's a good feature to take friends on trips, show them the galaxy. I like that! Much better gameplay choice than if we had to physically meet somewhere. Gameplay should come first and I think this is actually a great addition. As for public drop-in I think the pilot should be able to set preferences about what the "guest" can do with the ship. Sightseeing only, limited or full access to systems.

"Things change or get pushed back" indeed.

Look, we were told multicrew had these features (for 4 players) and now they don't. What it does have, is pathetic. It screams "bare minimum".

I wasn't talking about telepresence. I was talking about a solo player being able to swap between roles on his ship. Which made sense when the original roles existed. Now? not so much. What does make sense now is, the lack of NPC crew. Because there'd be sod all for them to do.

Yes, sod all for them to do.....but I would love to have an NPC Crew member just for eye candy!
