2023 Essential habitat animals META-WISHLIST:

When it comes to "necessary" clone species the only one that I really think is necessary is the European Bison/wisent, an absolute staple of European wildparks and the continents largest land animal. Beyond that, I do want the Eastern grey kangaroo... It's unique from the red kangaroo and would fill a different niche as well as giving us a bit more variety for Australian areas.

Using the same method I've used here, I took Zootierliste's Top Holdings chart and filtered out the following:
  • Animals that are already in the game
  • Different subspecies of animals already in the game
  • Aviary and exhibit animals (including sliders/terrapins), as per the rules of this thread
  • Domesticated animals, as the list would have been dominated by domestic breeds
  • Borderline exhibit/habitat animals like smaller tortoises, despite being allowed on this thread - I'd rather see what Frontier does with these first
  • Fully aquatic animals, despite being allowed on this thread - again I'd like to see how these animals will be addressed
After this procedure, of the remaining animals, I took the first 50 to conjure up a list:
  1. Golden pheasant - 565 EAZA holdings
  2. Mandarin duck - 491 EAZA holdings
  3. (European) white stork* - 458 EAZA holdings
  4. (European) mouflon** - 457 EAZA holdings
  5. Greater rhea (no subspecific status) - 448 EAZA holdings
  6. South American coati (no subspecific status)*** - 435 EAZA holdings
  7. Black swan - 400 EAZA holdings
  8. African spurred tortoise - 399 EAZA holdings
  9. (Central European) wild boar - 361 EAZA holdings
  10. Silver pheasant (no subspecific status) - 360 EAZA holdings
  11. Wood duck - 359 EAZA holdings
  12. Patagonian mara - 328 EAZA holdings
  13. Common marmoset - 318 EAZA holdings
  14. Common pheasant (no subspecific status) - 294 EAZA holdings
  15. Lady Amherst's pheasant - 290 EAZA holdings
  16. (Common) mallard - 289 EAZA holdings
  17. Indian crested porcupine - 283 EAZA holdings
  18. Cotton-top tamarin - 278 EAZA holdings
  19. Mute swan - 267 EAZA holdings
  20. Bar-headed goose - 254 EAZA holdings
  21. Red-footed tortoise - 250 EAZA holdings
  22. European roe deer - 249 EAZA holdings
  23. Barnacle goose - 246 EAZA holdings
  24. Scarlet ibis - 232 EAZA holdings
  25. Great white pelican - 225 EAZA holdings
  26. Reeves's pheasant - 220 EAZA holdings
  27. Ruddy shelduck - 217 EAZA holdings
  28. Common shelduck - 213 EAZA holdings
  29. Red-crested pochard - 211 EAZA holdings
  30. Ringed teal - 206 EAZA holdings
  31. Demoiselle crane - 201 EAZA holdings
  32. African sacred ibis - 193 EAZA holdings
  33. Leopard tortoise (no subspecific status) - 190 EAZA holdings
  34. Reeves's muntjac (no subspecific status) - 189 EAZA holdings
  35. Serval (no subspecific status) - 188 EAZA holdings
  36. Helmeted guineafowl (no subspecific status) - 185 EAZA holdings
  37. Red-breasted goose - 183 EAZA holdings
  38. Tufted capuchin (no subspecific status) - 179 EAZA holdings
  39. Crested partridge - 176 EAZA holdings
  40. (East African) gray crowned crane - 173 EAZA holdings
  41. King quail - 172 EAZA holdings
  42. South American tapir (no subspecific status) - 171 EAZA holdings
  43. Common squirrel monkey - 170 EAZA holdings
  44. Canada goose (no subspecific status) - 167 EAZA holdings
  45. White-faced whistling duck - 167 EAZA holdings
  46. Chilean flamingo - 165 EAZA holdings
  47. Egyptian goose - 160 EAZA holdings
  48. Northern pintail - 158 EAZA holdings
  49. Raccoon dog (no subspecific status) - 154 EAZA holdings
  50. Barbary macaque - 152 EAZA holdings
*Since Zootierliste takes note of the subspecific status of animals in their top holdings chart and this thread prefers full species ranks, I've put common names for subspecies in parentheses. I couldn't ignore them entirely, since the figures are only for the aforementioned subspecies. When combined with other subspecies, the holdings increase quite a bit (e.g. in the case of the gray crowned crane this figure surpasses 300, when it is only 173 for the eastern gray crowned crane).
**Had to include common names for invalid and disputed (sub)species, due to limitations concerning the website's holdings stats as explained above (i.e. European mouflon, common squirrel monkey and raccoon dog).
***When an entry has a "no subspecific status" note in parentheses, this means there are other subspecies defined on Zootierliste's system with separate holdings, so the total may actually be considerably higher (e.g. common pheasant) than the figures specified on the list. Doesn't apply to entries without this note.

Sadly there is no English version of this particular page, so you'd have to translate it using your browser or a third-party application if you don't speak German.

The fact that you had to exclude domestic breeds from this list to me is somehow the most convincing argument ever that we really need domestic breeds represented in the game 🙈

Absolutely! I'm all for more domestic breeds. I think we particularly need a petting zoo themed pack. Just had to exclude them from this one, so half the list isn't made up of the same few species over and over again. 🐔

Oh it wasn't meant as crisism at all, big sorry if it came off that way!! I thought your approach was super interesting and cool actually, just had me think how underrepresented they really are :D

Now I think I might just put "any chicken" "any goat" "any bunny" in my wishlist when I finally get around to finish it haha 🐓

No worries, didn't take it that way. Just wanted to clarify. (y)

Hi, everybody!

As March draws to a close, please remember that any edits must be done before the end of the month for March posts. Also, please remove parentheses and descriptions from the side of the animal lists. It makes them much more difficult to process. If you want to explain your choices, please do so above or below your list. Thank you!

I am not just going to pick random species, I am going to pick species that I need and would actually want to see in the game:
  1. Tasmanian Devil
  2. Patagonian Mara
  3. Red River Hog
  4. African Crested Porcupine
  5. Linnaeus's Two-Toed Sloth
  6. Black Howler Monkey
  7. Bolivian Squirrel Monkey
  8. Geoffroy's Spider Monkey
