A Final Plea to Frontier for Longer Hairstyles

Ok, guys....as fun as the memes and puns are, let's respect OP and not totally derail the thread. Thanks.

What pun are you even talking about? There was no pun. Remlok is a real thing and a real reason to not have long hair, hell, Ed even said as much.

Long hair, not practical. Nothing I said was off topic or derailing.

I've already said several times that I'm only looking options, ponytails, buns, an updue, but not something so short that I can't envision myself with it like now. There's a very wide middle ground between my ideal character and the current choices that we can meet at. But if I were to never voice that as some people seem to think I shouldn't then how middle ground ever be reached?

Quite simply it wouldn't.....which is what some people would apparently prefer and even want as twisted as that is......

When your character is sitting down (ie, all the time) you won't even be able to see said long hair. The lore is, that when there is a canopy breach, your Remlock deploys, covering your head. Long hair would prevent that, and you would die a quick and painful death. But at this point there are a lot of things that break lore, so I wouldn't be surprised if sometime down the line they offer long hair as a paid cosmetic item.

P.S., To threaten to quit the game if you can't have long pink hair seems a little childish, and undermines your argument.

To be honest, i can understand both sides.

Im a guy with long hair (a little over the middle of my back) and usually i pick long hairstyles in games too.

Obviously there are characters in Elite with pretty long hair allready
latest
So it would be nice to have those hairstyles.

BUT not in our cockpit.
It makes sense that the hair in our ship is tied up or hidden somehow, because of the mentioned safety reasons, helmet, gravity and whatever, just like this:
Also - In the current build both genders have a pony tail, and there is a shoulder-length bob for females.

So just for our in-ship commanders it totally makes sense. Hopefully in Spacelegs then when we can walk around in stations or on planets FD adds the untied versions of those hairstyles.

Momo I still say just keep your helmet on full time. That way your long hair is obviously up and in the helmet, even if you can't see it. It's a good compromise that is very believable, because even if long hair was an option, with the helmet on full time you'd never see it anyway.

And of course, Frontier will never speculate in public on things they're not ready to put into the game or have even got near to developed yet. Not techincally possible for 2.3, as we know .. more hairstyles on the current emergency helmet design, which is where I think the difficulty is going further (moving hair being out of question, terminal on fps no matter what) .....

That said we would like to add further styles in future releases that convey pinned-up hair, or long hair tied back.

Keep buying the paintjobs (and I STILL reckon a crowdfunder based on a extra flightsuit sales is an idea). Have to give Frontier space to build what they can, as they can, in among all the other things though. Then fingers crossed, wait and see.

The pony tails that were demonstrated in the stream would also block the remlok, so this is not a good argument.

Hi everyone,

We really want to give you as many options as possible when creating characters. Unfortunately long hair is something we are unable to support from a technical standpoint.
Creating realistic looking long hair that behaves credibly both in normal gravity and in zero g, would take a lot of time and resources that we felt were better spent elsewhere.

It simply wouldn't have hit the quality bar that we want to achieve with everything we put in to Elite Dangerous.

From a lore perspective, a lot of spacers would have short hair to fit within their helmets, and to behave in zero g so they don't have their vision blocked.

That said we would like to add further styles in future releases that convey pinned-up hair, or long hair tied back.

Thanks for the clarification, Ed. Always appreciate when you comment on some user's post.

Awesome idea! A new source of revenues for Frontier: sell additional hair styles!

For christ sakes... I know about the lore. I know about the remlok. I said so in the OP. Will people stop trying to tell me about this helmet that I've already made mention of? I know. I am painfully aware of it. I could probably build one now people have brought it up so often.

As far as me quitting the game for those reason. I have said again and again, that is not because frontier decide one way or enough to do something about it. It is do to my own personal limits. I'm expressing a personal fear. Not making a demand.

Not necessarily. The technology levels in Elite are such that personalised Remlock suits would be a totally trivial thing. and pilots would be at their leisure to accommodate their sense of fashion using a technology that is as trivial to them as carrying around our entire email accounts in our pockets is to us. You have to keep in mind these are people that regard using a Holo-Me as easier and more convenient than carrying around a physical mirror. And also these are people enabled of such technological prowess that they can change the colour of their hair, skin, ethnicity, eye colour and even gender whenever they feel like it.

And with that being said I can now quote myself in answer to a similar post:

I can think up 2 solutions already:
1) The hair gets sucked up and into the helmet as it closes. You wouldn't need to code in complex physics of the hair actually taking up space inside the helmet. Just an animation of the hair being blown up and sucked in towards the head as the helmet closes.

2) The hair gets vacuum wrapped into a very thin pony tail-like tube that is attached to the helmet. It would look like a cable hanging from the back of the helmet. Much simpler animation of the hair being compressed into a thin line and 'zipped' up in the material of the suit.

The only reason FD could not include longer hair right off the bat is purely a video game coding restriction, i.e. it'd be a lot of work to make long hair work in zero G. Lore reasons for the absence of longer hair do not stand up to scrutiny.

OK, ED can't do long flowing hair, they already have a ponytail and shoulder hair option (seen in the live stream), yes, add a couple of some sort of a tied back bun options so that people can have long hair that's tied back. Should be pretty easy for FD to do, maybe they already have it as not all the styles were shown in the live stream. I had long hair for 5 years in uni myself, I get it, we found a compromise, thread closed.

Fun fact, this thread is not entirely about you.

Long hair discussion = 46 page megathread. :O

I love you guys! :D
Only really because a certain forum poster decided to wage an illogical one man crusade against the OP of this thread for what was ultimately revealed to be petty and vile reasons.

Most everybody else is like, "Sure, why not. It would be nice. Here's some images of what it could look like."

we will see how the coming hairstyles "quality" and behavior will be then we may come back and talk again if long hair would really have messed up that quality that much ^^

I think Frontier are correct in not putting long flowing hair into the game. Its far too expensive computationally to model correctly and I've yet to see it done particularly well. It would indeed be a wasted development effort.

As stated, it doesn't go well with zero g either. However it would be nice to see as many interesting variations as possible.
