full of stories about how this or that ship was able to stay alive. Every ship outfitter would be offering standard anti-goid refits, "guaranteed" to keep you alive
Welcome to these forums, there's lots of information on here about what you are after.

the value of keeping the mystery of self discovery in the game could be worth something in elite if the activities involved were seen as valuable such as gameplay being unique or fun.

however, with all of the game play being the same with each thing you'd be experimenting with and most of that is repetitive and previous experimental results having no value if the next option that requires the same effort just replaces it and all you can do is sell it back for credit cost... then the player's decision reduces to the cost of time... which the game does not refund or value.

so it becomes an obvious result that players will look to avoid that cost and follow guides... since they are not missing out on game play. the idea that they will value the fact that they discover something on their own when weighed against the time lost is unrealistic.

however, exposing yourself as a player to the truth of the game's shallow mechanics and loops on top of the grind laid out to see in order to achieve some goal can have the effect of turning off a player that otherwise could have remained playing in ignorance and eventually reach that goal. the guides often also do not speak to the benefit of moderation to avoid burnout caused by staying in a sequence of grind loops too long.

the thing with enjoying elite long term, is tricking your brain into not recognising what you do each session is basically exactly the same as last and none of it will matter to the game state and all the theoretical discovery and mystery is going to mostly only exist in your imagination. the whole grind is in your mind mantra is exactly this. you can enjoy elite for years and years if you're good at imagining a better game that you are playing while using it and being selectively blind to any attempt to break the illusion.

So you think I'm petty. Fine, I can live with that. You were the one who brought up the topic of him "turning off ads" as some kind of argument as if that raised his credibility, and I just pointed out that that claim doesn't have a leg to stand on. I'm fine with monetization, and I don't care enough about D2EA or any other content creator "to go after them" as you make it seem. But if guys like D2EA build up a public vanity project and start to speak "for the community", they are subject to some scrutiny, and what they do and say needs to be evaluated in the context of their public representation.

Even if he works full time and claims it is only "a hobby", his channel still is a business. He still monetizes, he still advertises for very expensive sticks and gamer gear, and he still sells merchandise. There is nothing wrong with that, but that forms the context of what he says and how he says it.

You pointed it out yourself; he doesn't really have a clue about some (maybe even a lot of) areas of ship building, but he still puts up build guides. He is always the first to put out a grind or farming guide for everything before we even know if the stuff is worth farming. Why? He does it, because he wants to stay relevant to his audience. And he puts out opinion pieces because of the relevancy he assumes he has.

Again, nothing wrong with that. But as the audience, be aware that he's not mother Theresa, and as a community member, be aware that he speaks for his own bubble at best. He has done some very good work for the community like some of the online tools he put up on his CMDR's toolbox. If it was just a hobby, maybe he should stick to stuff like that. But that will not be enough to sustain a 100k sub Youtube channel, I am afraid.
Don’t get me wrong, some of the wording in that video could definitely have been worded better, in that he speaks for his community, and not the overall community.

But I don’t think it’s all that ‘doom [view fishing] for the sake of views’ that it’s being made out as, as I said prior.

And when I mentioned the example of turning off ads, I didn’t mean that as a ‘He doesn’t monetize the channel’, but more of a gesture to convenience the viewers. Assuming he does so(my brain goes into standby mode when any ad pops up to click the skip button, so I don’t usually tend to remember whether I saw any).

It certainly would be, considering how obnoxious YT’s mid-roll ad spam is so that people buy premium. No thanks to that corporate gag, Google…

And no, he definitely is no messiah(so to speak) and - also by his own admission - not the greatest when it comes to AX. Otherwise he would have seen the value in having more than one mod reinforcement on a shieldless combat build*.

That aside, I still think some of the criticism here was still not entirely warranted. Namely the “He’s only doing this to fish for views” part.

*To put a slight pin in that, I think part of the issue lies with how regular PvE enemies make it very easy to hide behind ultra beefy shields and never have to worry about paper hull and modules underneath. I personally make it a point to push back against those ‘only use shields, never bother about hull or module reinforcement’ suggestions purely for the off chance that you ever do lose your shields. A spec ops wing will tear through them pretty quickly if they all focus you.

Or run into anything that uses phasing sequence. Which spec ops will also do.

Also, nothing I said here was meant personally. You’re a pretty fine person as far as I’m concerned.

To be honest, apart from any potential financial rewards, I'd take it for granted that a youtuber is fishing for views, why else do it?

One can also just have an opinion, one doesn't have to be a white knight or a doomster, or any of the shades of grey in between.

It doesn't make sense though. A galaxy with billions (trillions?) of people, and they haven't figured out that sharing information is a good idea? Especially when they don't all get infinite lives 😹
i like to think that commanders in organic elite world would do the same, as we do. build their own networks and tools. which allows me to roleplay the usage of all 3rd party tools as "ingame" in a sense.
core of sandbox games is do it on your own and elite lets you do it all... :)

Well it triggers me a bit when people - not just D2EA, also others as well as posters here on the forums, assume to speak from a position of "majority". That's just wrong. It's the classic internet bubble effect. I already said above, I'm sure D2EA is a fine chap, and I don't think I said he was only in it for the money, which I'm fine with by the way. You just have to be aware of the contexts. Also, Youtube is a popularity contest. And if you reach a certain popularity (100k subs would classify for that in my opinion), it is a big temptation to confuse popularity with importance and influence. They aren't called "Influencers" for nothing. I think D2EA regularly falls for that trap, to be honest.

Also, nothing I said here was meant personally. You’re a pretty fine person as far as I’m concerned.

No worries here. I can separate a heated debate from personal beef :).

It was just a question. I wanted to see if you're as cynical about Frontier as well. You know, with them being a business and wanting money.

Nice strawman. Oh and what does them being a business and wanting money have to do with the OP and this thread? Keep it together and debate one thing at a time, you're all over the place. In my original comments you didn't even question or tell me I'm wrong. You went straight strawman mode.

Certainly. It's Promium Relay at Blua Eaec WW-E c14-1293, amd I usually check Data, Commodoties, Tritium on Inara with Ratraii as the reference system to see the nearest Fleet Carriers' and stations' stocks and prices, they're updated fairly often: https://inara.cz/elite/commodities/?pi1=1&pa1[]=10269&ps1=Ratraii&pi10=3&pi11=0&pi3=1&pi9=0&pi4=0&pi5=168&pi12=0&pi7=0&pi8=0
I just realised I didn't thank you for this info, I've bookmarked the system and will definitely pay it a visit next time I'm on my way. Thanks, cmdr :)

Okay: You are wrong.

You claim non of this was his honest opinion. You suggest that he deliberately causes drama and slanders Elite/Frontier because all he wants is money. All the proof you have is "because I said so", "because all Youtubers are inherently evil" or maybe you're a mind reader.

You didn't discuss any of the points made in video. You went straight ad hominem mode.
