I suppose I should tell you about this now, so that you're not too angry about it when it happens: in the future, the game will probably be discounted at some points. 33% discounts, 50% discounts, maybe even 75%! This would also fall under your definition of "crapping on the people who supported the game early", I expect.

I bought it when it was still $150 i'll get every future expansion. It was on the store page originally posted that the price would come down over time with different prices if you waited until the next phase of testing alpha beta gamma 300/150/50 then now 60. Almost everyone knows that every game on steam will get cheaper and go on sales as time goes on.
With that leap of logic might as well say 'the people that want keys will support any thing that people are upset about ; wanting space zombies or flying pokeman dinosaurs'.
That is not what we are discussing, this is about steam keys.

Since people still dont enough before coming here demanding or flaming.
THere is no need for new steam keys.

Your current ED account can very easly be merged with your steamaccount, eliminating the need to distribute a new key.
Yes thats right, other developers have done this before and its a service steam provides, supposdle without any extra cost.

Never had anything but trouble with Steam, only have two games on it and it would not let me add the second to the same account as the first. The guys running it won't help by joining the two together to moving one to the other, really useless and unfriendly over the e-mail.

I'll never buy a game that has to be run through that system!!!!

Elite through the FDEV servers is all I want, will get really upset if it goes over to only being a Steam game.

People don't seem to realize that steam keys are not free. Valve gets a straight percentage of each copy of the game sold through Steam. I've been told that this percentage can be as high as 30%. So for all you guys wanting Steam keys for free just think about the amount of dough FD would have to dish out to satisfy you guys. It would be tantamount to paying 30% of your total income in back taxes.

Kinda true, but the part you are missing is that they pay steam a % of their sales via steam.
Publishers can generate any amount of keys to distribute as they see fit (promotional/marketing and in this case, keys for owners via another sales channel). Indie game Devs tend to do this fairly consistently for games sold through bundles and if Steam is taking 30% of their sales via bundles a lot of them would be in serious financial trouble!

Now obviously they don't want to go around generating excessive amounts of keys for people, in case some are traded/sold etc, so there is some risk, but most people who would like a key are not adverse to the key being tied to their existing frontier account.

I literally only registered to the forums because I want a Steam key as well and wanted to reply to the poll. But nope... "you may not vote on this poll."

I feel that users who buy it on Steam get a bonus compared to the old users. I cannot easily involve myself with the Steam community. I cannot give this game a review, share screenshots and such with the community, craft guides, etc. I feel I have an inferior version of the game now, and that doesn't feel fair.

I would very much like to be able to link my company site purchased game to my Steam account now that the game is available on Steam. (And not just have it as a non-Steam game link)

Haha, I am almost embarrassed to guess the number of minutes it took me to realize there was nothing wrong with the Steam forums when I could not reply to a thread to answer someone's question.

I also find it downright strange that the official game forum is more open than the Steam one.

I'm not entirely understanding you there. I can partake in the forums for the game, but for me to access it I have to do roundabout methods to get to their forums that feel similar to loopholes, and I cannot add discussion threads with screenshots, videos, or Steam streaming. This isn't to say I can't do those things, but I can't do those things and have them show up within the Elite Dangerous community areas. Anything I create gets put in as a 'non-Steam game' and doesn't show up when people search for Elite Dangerous content. I can't share what I do in the game without directly handing that content to a person. Steam users can directly post things like this to the community. I also cannot recommend this to friends through the Steam recommendation system, write a review for the game, create a guide, or share artwork. There's all these things that I just cannot do because according to Steam I do not own the game, and it makes my copy of the game less valuable than a Steam copy in my perspective.

Also its often the case that if your Steam friends see you playing something it leads to them playing it or at least trying it too. Word of mouth is a powerful thing. I always get messages asking how something im playing is and whether its worth looking at.

Pretty much what I was going to say, with ~300 friends on steam from my TF2 addiction, at least a few are going to see me playing elite at silly o'clock every night and want to try it.
Thus more sales for Frontier = more stuff for us in the future.
I fail to see any down side to having a steam key

After numerous fights with Steam, because they do not care about their customers, especially the ones that spend a ton of money with them, I am more than happy to not be tied to Steam at all.

I am going for cracked versions of the games that I purchased on Steam, before put foot in Steam again. So no, I don't really care about a Steam key :)

How is any of what you mentioned, detrimental to the game experience?

Want to write a review? Gamespot let you do that too; and of course you can always make your own blog. We survived decades without the need of reviews on Steam, and people wrote reviews and let others hear their voice anyway; so that to me doesn't feel like a problem.
Do you need to be on Steam community? This forum and the others dedicated to the game are not cool enough? Even here, there are choices available; and no real advantage, beside knowing that X or Y is playing the game A or B.
Same goes for share screenshots; free web space for blogs are everywhere....ditto for guides.

Can't find yet a single feature of Steam that makes me think that they offer me any sort of service that I can't live without...am I hard to please or the majority is so easy to get hooked on something? Looking at the numbers of the poll, I guess the former.

Steam allows us to talk to other players during the game, it has loads of features over vanilla E: D I for one am looking forwards to a steam key having bought it a month or so before steam release I would have waited if I knew it was heading to steam :)
