What advantage is it to use Steam? I have not used it for years!
Steam updates all my games at once...that would include Elite: Dangerous
Steam is my chat interface so it already is always open
Steam lets you find friend's parties and what not much easier
Steam lets me add my already existing friends who get the game rather than try to hunt down which ones bought it on a separate platform
Steam community lets you find other players who own the game much easier and add them as friends or from a Steam Group to match-make much more efficiently

...and those are just the benefits I can think of. I imagine people using SteamLink might find a use from it as well, and a whole host of other benefits from the overlay for streamers.

Bandwidth costs would be reduced since Steam doesn't charge for them. If most people download the game from Steam then I assume FD will cover the updates with the launcher? Unless a Steam version is produced. Win, win for everyone :)

They won't give keys for a while because they don't want all the negative reviews. Can't say I blame them, if everyone who already had the game could post a review it would get ugly quick.

Voted "don't care" because I honestly couldn't give 2 thingies about this.

I can appreciate people's reasons why they want steam keys, but the absolute furore this has caused is utterly beyond me.

You get another process to run in the background ;)
If your PC is of such low resources and/or low processing power that the steam process actually has any effect at all on the game itself then you really shouldn't be using that PC for gaming.

I purchased ED a few weeks ago and would have held off if I had known it was being released on Steam. I prefer to buy all my games on Steam to get the auto-updating and integration with the Steam Community. I'd definitely like a Steam key, even if they have to charge a few $ to cover the overhead of Steam.

What overhead? It is free on steam.

This game isn't that multi threaded!

I just came here to say that I love Elite, bought it a few months ago and I would probably have waited had I known it would come on Steam.
Please let us transfer our accounts over!
And thanks for making a great game.

I think you may have missed the intended sarcasm in the post you quoted. ;)

I don't care.

I have the game, and that's what matters to me. If I really want to run it through Steam, then I'll add it to my other games I play through Steam. It still has to load the launcher, and the launcher still needs you to log in, and then the game starts.... So, whatever.

I'd really, really like a key to add to steam (Just for convenience sake) but I don't think it'd be a heartbreak if it doesn't happen. That being said though, I do hope FD decides to get owners some steam keys :D

I'm sure the hold up is that FD are looking to find a way to make a key that is tied to your ED account. That way you can't sell it or gift it to someone else.

It'd be PR suicide to ignore it, and they even said that they're "looking into options." Doesn't effect me at all if they do or don't. I'd like a steam key. Don't need it though, since it will just be the launcher and overlay and I can do that without.
