What's steam? and why is it so important? <- not trolling just have never used it, and don't realty know what it is.

I think a steam key would be nice, but not essential.

I say this because when I launch steam I see the games I have purchased over the years and sometimes stumble across something I haven't played in a while and think "ooh" and fire it up again. Not everyone is going to play ED day in day out and over time it may be forgotten about. (Real life does have a tendancy to get in the way :))

Imagine then in a year or so launching steam to be reminded of ED once more and thinking "ooh" ...

I use Steam for a lot of my games, and I would really like to have a steam key for ED. Being able to run ED through steam would hopefully allow me to stop using the standalone launcher (of which I'm not a big fan), and would hopefully have the updates go through Steam as well. I would also love to leave a great review of ED on Steam so that we can get more CMDRs playing the game.

This is a no-brainer, I think it would be pretty easy to implement as well. Just issue a key-code to everyone's Frontier Account and we could just access it the same way we do with any other additional content for ED (i.e. mercenary edition extras, skin packs, etc.).

Keys should be provided, giving less for early supporters is just not fair. Also Steam provides free unlimited keys to developers, so there is no excuse.

I've had it added to steam for ages, and it gets all the features of steam as soon as you do that, there's really no need for a key.

Just add the launcher exe to steam as a non-steam game, thats all it takes. The overlay works 100%.

There's no "No" option so I didn't vote. Seems like a thing that could be abused too easily so I'd rather not have that at all.

How could this be abused?

You cannot log into Elite Dangerous without an account with Elite Dangerous... so even if you had a steam key and gave it to a friend... congrats, he can download and launch the game... but he cannot play.

If you are that worried about additional installs of the game out there then you could have us link our steam accounts to our backer account and redeem via a button... no key issued.
It's not hard, all the other games I have backed have done it when they went to Steam.

It's time to support your backers as much as your backers have supported you... without us "throwing money at our screens" as someone else on this forum put it, Elite Dangerous would not have existed.

Steam is a very popular PC gaming platform. Its famous for its sales of games, and the collection you could gather in your steam library. I have 500+ games in my Steam Library. There are other benefits you get, like save sync between different computers, family sharing, in which you can share your game library with family members, steam cloud, that backs up your saved games on Steam servers, and other useful things like that.

In short:

  • Steam is a distribution platform for games (Owned by Valve - think Halflife)
  • Steam is also a social platform to tie players together so you can see your friends / chat / etc.
  • Steam also tracks your usage of games and can suggest new games that you might like to play

Depending upon your view it may or may not be important.

You can get along without it for sure.

Don't really care myself.

I like Steam a lot, and have bucket loads of games on Steam.

Getting a Steam key locks your game to Steam forever. Having to load up Steam to play Elite is no different to having to use the Frontier launcher.

I personally don't give a toss about Steam challenges, collection cards, chat, and forums

No discussion, yes, I lost all interest in playing E:D because having it outside of the place I have 500+ games it is annoying...

Um...you know you can disable automatic game updates while in-game, don't ya? (obviously not lol)

Yes, I do know. All of my Steam games I play offline, this is the only game I play with an online multiplayer component (at least it's the only game I'll actually play online). By the way, typing a verbalized pause like an "uhm", "erm" or whatever in a post makes you look very pretentious.

So just set it to not update while you are playing..... this is quite simple to do.

It's even simpler to not bother doing anything and leave it as it is. The E: D client is (very likely) less taxing on my system anyway.

Personally I'll be a little upset if they don't give us Steam keys. I've only recently bought a copy of ED. I was holding out for them to launch on Steam, yet everything I read from Frontier claimed it would never happen. I'd much rather get my updates from Steam as it seems to take forever and a day to patch every time there is an update now. (and no it's not my connection - My Steam and Blizzard games take no time to patch/download)

it is also an era where you do not expect something for nothing.

Thankfully some learn to adapt with time without throwing money at triple A garbage they call games today.

Games like Elite Dangerous wouldn't be here if it wasn't for my "throwing money at the screen".

Just to clarify, i didn't get ED "for free", i paid.

I didn't expect "something for nothing" in any era by the way.

I think if you see in which context i wrote that, you might understand why i wrote it....even though you probably will still disagree.

You were asking people to pay twice for the same product, that was what i was getting at.

All we need is the "demo version" of the game to be in steam (which is what we have already out of steam anyway. We still have to login to Frontier servers, if we don't, we can play only missions).

This is how FF14 on steam works: you can get it from steam, you can play it through steam if you have an existing account simply by hitting "download trial".
No keys, no account linking, no crazyness.

Dear Frontier: the solution to this request from your existing customer/backers base is just one email away to your steam sales rep.

I would love to get a key so I could have this on steam. I am on steam all the time, and when everything is on steam, it really makes install very easy.
