I genuinely don't care about having a Steam key. I object to people feeling as if they're somehow entitled to one, particularly when this sense of entitlement encourages them to behave rudely and disrespectfully.

That being said, I understand why some people might want Steam keys and if FD choose to provide them then that's fine by me.

I wouldn't say I feel entitled to one, but Frontier told us time and time again that they would never come to steam, ever. Had they simply said maybe in the future we can imagine coming to steam, then I would have waited, but they didn't. What Frontier did, and are still doing is this: step one, don't release the game on steam so that the compny recieves 100% of the profits, step 2, tell everyone that the game will never come to steam so people don't wait around for it and instead purchase the game immediately, step 3 release the game on steam after only 4 months because sales have dropped off from the original hype and they want to take advantage of steam's marketing, step 4, don't give keys to people who bought the game before it was released on steam in the hopes that a small percentage will buy the game a second time. I was lied to and I am angry with Frontier, therefore I will not purchase anything ever again from frontier from their store or from steam unless they prove that they are not liars and swindlers by giving me a steam key. So no, I don't feel entitled to a steam key, but I do feel angry for having been so obviously lied to.

When given a key a player should be excluded from running it non-steam ever again.
This would prevent key sharing (2 games for 1 price) but of course it would have to be optional for everyone.
Personally I would love to move my game to steam, everything is there.

I voted "Don't care". While I love Steam I won't be putting my copy of Elite onto it as I don't run Steam while playing Elite; I don't want another game downloading updates while I am trying to play.

If a game is launched from Steam, then steam does not download anything while the game is running.

Simpler to just link the key to our Frontier account so that it can't be used with a different one.

Everyone can start from Steam or from the launcher, and no one gets two games for the price of one.

Doesn't work that way. You'll still need to log on with your Elite / Pilot account and you can only ever be in the game once.
You could give the installer/DVD to anyone you meet and they'd still not be able to play unless they log in with an account.

All that a steam key for existing players would do is allow them to manage the game centrally from Steam, get updates in the same way that (most/many) of their other games do. More importantly perhaps, is they can then post in the Elite-D communities on steam, rate the game etc and contribute to (hopefully) improving ED ratings and sales.

If I'm not mistaken you can configure it so that it does (most games don't require a network connection anyway), but no, by default it doesn't.

I would like key.

Only because I want the ability to construct a positive review for Steam.

The more positive reviews = the more buyers, and the more buyers = more players. And more players = the win.

:D

Please give us keys Frontier!!!!

Frontier told us time and time again that they would never come to steam, ever.

That's not entirely true. David was asked if they would launch on Steam and he said no. He never ruled out the possibility of selling on Steam. The question is had you known ED would eventually sell through Steam would you really have waited? I sure as hell wouldn't. That's why I jumped in at beta. There's no way I'd have missed out on months of game time just to have the benefit of a few crappy social features I never use anyway in a walled garden distribution platform.

Like I say, I'm not in any way bothered about having a Steam key or not. If you want one that's fine and if FD decide to give you one then I'll be happy for you.

It just seems to me like a lot of fuss about nothing.

I personally would love to have a Steam key for ED, it's where all my other games are, easy for me to manage, easy to find friends also playing, and also it would be nice to move ED into my Steam folder (a virus recently wiped out my ED folder but left Steam alone so if it adds security then why not?) I understand that Steam will simply launch the Launcher and not update it, but still makes it easier in my opinion.

I would like a Steam key but its not going to kill me if I don't get one. My one concern is that some way down the line ED could end up in the same position as DCS where key merging ended so anyone buying keys on the DCS store could not longer activate their additional modules/planes on Steam leaving a 2 tier system in place which made me stay with the separate DCS launcher as htey had more frequent sales. Just my 2c.

Oh no! I'm not against Steam, not at all in fact, but for me I want Elite with it's own launcher and with no chance of Steam DL other stuff in the background. I'm not really into steam trophies though, but I can imagine those that do collect them would really want to be rewarded for their many hours in this game!

The moment you start playing a game in the steam library steams stops all downloadings, i have seen this because i used to play hours Skyrim and leave steam open to download updates or games and then stops everything until you are stop playing.

and what does having a key give me.

planet landings, no
walk around stations , no
new ships, no
new weapons, no
new missions, no

?

I added it as a 'non-steam' game yonks ago. Can still take/post screenshots. Can still interact with steam whilst playing. Really don't see the *need* that people are making out.

personally I would like them to keep on developing the game over a

KEY to steam which does NOTHING for me.....

I don't see any reason for it, but if you want it then fair enough. It just seems it'd serve no purpose.

Hell yes I want a Steam key. 95% of my 300+ PC games are on Steam and that's where I'd like to keep them. Besides E: D and Star Citizen all of my currently installed games are via Steam. And I don't want to sound rude but, I paid $160 for this game, so excuse me (and I hate to say it) but I think I should be entitled to a Steam key. In fact, why is it even a question of do we want one? Just post them to our E: D accounts and let those that want to redeem their game on Steam do so. It's not going to cost Frontier or Valve a dime; in fact Valve encourages these migrations when existing games debut on Steam.

It's actually somewhat annoying that we have to "ask" FD to do this for us. I find it a little bit rude they didn't think in advance that their existing playerbase/alpha/beta backers would want a complimentary key, as the game WAS NOT available on Steam until now.

I want to see my hours played, I want to upload screenshots and videos to the *correct* hub (as "adding a non-steam game won't post the SS's and vids to the actual hub), I want "official" support of streaming, I want to write a review, I want achievements (if there are to be any). Why should I not get all the features a new steam-purchaser gets @ $59.99, while my version doesn't support these features yet cost $159.99?

If you don't care about Steam features, then fine - don't redeem your key. But don't be a d**k and act like there is no personal advantage to some of us to have the game on Steam.

Um...you know you can disable automatic game updates while in-game, don't ya? (obviously not lol)

If they were able to give already owners of the game free steam keys i dont see why a company much bigger which was crowfounded by a lot of people, give free steam key to their loyal supporters.

IMHO

I'm not sure why Steam keys are even a question either. I've purchased multiple indie games from developer websites that later made it onto Steam. Each time I've received a free Steam key from the developer almost immediately. It doesn't cost Frontier anything and should be fairly simple.

My guess is they are holding off hoping the hardcore supporters will buy another copy on Steam to support the company, then later they'll release the keys. That is what I'm hoping at least.

I don't want a Steam key for Steam itself. You can easily add a non-steam game and get all of its benefits (freinds list, steam overlay, etc.). But the real reason I want to get the key is because I could better show it off to my friends, but most importantly: use steam wallet money. I know they are planning on releasing paid expansions, and they sell skins for ships. I would love to buy some, and it s MUCH easier to use steam wallet money from birthdays. It would make me much more willing to spend money on the game with the ease of gift cards.

Here's the truth, Steam has incredible sales. That's it, that's the reason I want a steam key. When expansions are released, I would like to be able to buy it in a steam sale. Now, I know that many companies also have sales, often at the same time as steam, but I can't really be sure of this. Honestly, at this point I'm not sure what to expect from Frontier, a key costs them nothing, it's obvious they're doing this so that a few might buy a second copy, but if that's the case, why should they ever give us steam keys, and why should they ever put the game on sale. For those of us not on steam, we may potentially be facing scenario in the future where an expansion for ED is 75% off on steam, but we're stuck paying full price at the Frontier store. I'm not saying this will definitely happen, but by not giving us free steam keys, I'd say it's a sign that they don't mind being douchebags, and may continue to screw us over in the future. Let me make one thing clear though, I still trust frontier, I haven't lost all hope, I'm not simply piling them on the EA, zynga, capcom list, they are still an alright company (I hope). I Just get passionate about stuff like this bcause it feels like a step in the wrong direction. I've seen so many game companies do such shady things, it's rampant among game companies right now, every one of them is looking for how they can get a slightly bigger piece of the pie and we're the ones getting screwed. So please Frotier, show us that you're not one of the bad guys, just give out the steam keys and all will be right in the world, all will be forgiven.

I will reiterate:
The issue of providing steam keys is being investigated and we (the customers) are waiting for an answer. Seeing as it has been a holiday period there has been limited time for FD and Steam to talk to each other about this.

Anything is else is unfounded speculation and in some cases rampant tinfoilhattery (if that is actually a word).
