Still boring. I don't 'get it'.

Let me try to explain it.

I have to 'balance' my Adder to ensure I can derive maximum cargo capacity while attaining maximum sublight speed. This goes as far as ensuring I have just enough fuel to get there so I can stash an extra tonne on-board.

When I get into system I have to keep my head on a swivel and adjust my tactics accordingly on what I see and adjust accordingly.

Same goes even when I drop into sunlight at a station and I'm boosting in at 745 m/s in silent running so i can dock up before people realise I'm there.

I might not be explaining this well as I've been drinking all day tbh.

A better easier descriptive might be actually being the ED equivalent of Han Solo (small temperamental ship, punching through a blockade) rather than writing terrible lore and swagger about being the ED equivalent of Han Solo while driving a D rated T-9 in solo vs no opposition you get from Mobian traders.

Physical storytelling you mean? So rather than writing it you actually go out and live it.

Is that really a thing? A Bot for ED that can do all the work alone? Buying cargo, leaving station, plotting star map's course, jumping, maneuvering in super-cruise, avoiding interceptions, fighting interceptors, low-waking to evade, docking at a station, selling cargo, and looping it all?
Anyone knows of such a thing? I would love to read the code on such a work of art. Maybe there's some lessons in that code for NPC AI improvement.

Yup. The worse thing is that the ED AI previously when SJA got to do an overhaul for them with the engineers update, and was quite ninja at one stage, till people whined about getting killed by NPCs.

Let's be real about this. People had two complaints.

The first complaint was that they were getting annihilated by NPCs with bugged weapons like multicannons which rapid fired plasma slugs. This wasn't tougher AI it was just broken weapons.

The second complaint, which persisted after the bugs were fixed, is that NPCs took too long to kill, because they would strategically fall back whenever their shields dropped. This actually WAS an AI feature that drove people crazy, but it's not because they were getting killed.

Your point stands, though, that this AI kiting behavior probably did make AFK turret boating prohibitively inefficient, which would have been a good thing had the changes not been reverted.

I was being a bit broad with my initial post you're quoting, I'll admit.

While the broken engineer weapons were an issue, even after they were fixed, places like here and EDC were full of posts of AFK Turretboat players whining how the AI was fighting back or running away when damaged, and affecting the precious cr/hr.

I really liked it though :)

There is a better chance that cheating will be solved by latest Windows 10 update then by Frontier Dev. What I read on hacking forums generally there are lot of code injectors which stopped working after Windows 10 1903 update.

The place was not full of people complaining that they couldn't afk the game, that's rubbish. The 2.1 beta featured several iterations of revised AI, IIRC the 4th version (where running away was toned down) was pretty popular, but the live release had further changes that were more badly bugged than the 2.0 version we had lived with for 8 months (we had been told the bugs would not be fixed in the live game because a new version was coming with the next update, which was then delayed).

The 2.1 AI change implementation was a disaster. Not because they were harder to kill (the engineered NPCs were quickly dialled back to allow players time to engineer their own ships, but that wasn't followed up for years either) but because they were irritating. They still are nothing more than an irritation for the most part, the balance in several scenarios is much better now than it was in 2.1 or before but the rank dependant stuff is still (imo) a weak substitute for location based challenge.

AFK turret boating has never been a significant thing in the game nor an influence on how the game was developed, it's just a strawman.

Rumour or verified?

Verified several weeks over in the Kumo Crew, and seen in practice via Healies4Feelies- the combination of PG, heavy weapons engineering, heal beams and old style CZs (i.e. they don't stop) leads to almost immortal ship groups farming merits without ships of equal capability deterring them. And since merits are linear (i.e. there is no minimum / maximum bucket to fill) the higher the amount the better. Its partly why Sandro suggested weighted merits, and that heal beams need urgent changes / removal, a wider shield / hull re-balance or using new CZ mechanics in PP. This is not automated botting, its simple exploitation of a combination of things across ED that together are formidable.

Don't think so. Code injection is a thing for malware to run arbitrary code especially to gain elevated rights. It's not so prevalent in game cheats.

Heal beams aren't afk farming, and outside of PvP it's not a meta. The conversation (and my point) was about the 2.1 AI changes.

I was referring to this blanket statement:

AFK turret boating has never been a significant thing in the game nor an influence on how the game was developed, it's just a strawman.

It does have a significant impact, as I outlined.

Do you think the game was designed around it, or modified to allow for the playstyle?
