A vision of how planets could look in Elite - Warning: Contains graphic content!

A lot of people here are saying it won't happen. It will. In time. And with our continued support.

But you simply cannot build a full spectrum game, with everything, in a few years. Or five years. FDEV are building it one bit at a time. You already know the alternative, Star Citizen. They will get there as well. But they are trying to deliver a lot more of that full spectrum universe at the same time, and they are still years away from Beta.

Isn't this the problem though? The less imagination required to fill in the gaps (ie great on screen graphics), the more quickly boredom takes a hold.

There are many reasons people might get bored, I doubt graphical fidelity is one of them. I really don't want to have to start imagining the visuals.

What is exciting, is that one day, probably not too many years away, this IS what games like Elite will look like.

Possibly. Graphics hardware will no doubt eventually become powerful enough to do it, but what may be the more difficult hurdle to overcome is the number of developers needed to model fidelity like that in a video game. As graphics get better so do the development teams get larger, and modeling / texturing take longer. Better tools may be able to offset that team size creep somewhat, maybe, but it's a serious issue to overcome.

Just look at the original Elite versus Elite Dangerous. David and Ian made the original game on their own, just the two of them. Now how many people work on Elite Dangerous today? The large percentage of them are modelers and artists due to the much better graphics. So if you triple or quadruple the graphical fidelity of the game to do what the OP's post looks like, how large will the team required to do that be? And how would Frontier be able to even afford a team that large for a game like this?

I hope the industry finds a good solution to it in time, because I'd love to see graphics like that in a game like Elite someday!

But that is exactly what happened (use of imagination to fill in the gaps) in the early versions of Elite and it's held up as a CLASSIC. Today people are moaning about being bored or stunning visuals and sound but no gameplay etc.. etc..

Amazing! Cannot find my bookmark but I belive that some Russian (?) CMDRs made also astonishing work combining Elite and Unre*l engine with ships and bases in daylight. Come somebody dig out and crosslink here?

Edit : looks similar to this
https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showt...hic-content!?p=5283102&viewfull=1#post5283102

but I remember it was a huge album with bases.

Edit edit: found it, it was fan made project Ed Polygon, looks like it was rewoked. Copyright issue? Sad.

I have that playable demo from Unreal Engine 4.

The guy wanted to do some kind of First Person Shooter PvP, with assets from the game. So you have a massive Farragut Battle Cruiser (in first person while walking below it, that 2km thing looks incredible), a Corvette, an Anaconda, a Clipper, an Eagle and a Sidewinder docked as well, and you can play all around them.

I'll uploaded some pics in this album: http://imgur.com/a/G8E3B

3 Examples:

Federal Corvette

Imperial Clipper

Anaconda:

Extremely nice!

Hello I made the pics of the scarab, that were made in 3dmax...SepterLt made the ones in UE4 and shared the models on Ed Art Tools...and yes they are very quick art concepts. not in game....lol

The reddit links are the highest res..sorry if peeps wanted higher.

Scarab, water, mud. (2757x1700) http://i.imgur.com/7phXISq.jpg

and a joke one for a reddit user "Scarab, General Lee, mud" http://i.imgur.com/sXvnQMV.jpg
They are all weird sizes as I cropped the original 4k renders...sometimes for composition cropping is needed.

I have one more I'm working on..this time making a insect like monster attacking the SRV. :)

Just great!

Very, very nice!
I would like Elite Feet with one of those. [yesnod]

Nice! I too am hopeful that ED will someday look as good as Star Citizen does now. Ooooh SNAP!! :p (But, you know, with playable frame rates.)

Amazing looking SRV right there! Very nice work!

Also, tell me you can do that to work in Spintires...please!!!

I bet you saw these concepts from Frontier too:

I so want to see more SRV variations so badly...They should stop focusing into combat stuff and statistics, and give us more tools to enjoy tasks or do them in varied ways.
