I used to really enjoy such threads up to beta2

now i`m completely disillusioned

FD`s own concept art is great too, too bad they have never come very close

and filter it through our in game rendition of the previously posted concepts of how today`s elite was supposed to look like... then look again at Bran`s pictures and cry.. or laught... it won`t change the "one station at a time", barely any variation, lifeless beige reality

+1 rep for the sig. Always wondered what the lead designer's credentials were. Googled reviews of those games and :eek::S[sad][ugh][down]. Exactly as I expected though.
 
It would be awesome if ED can get to those kind of graphics, might need to start saving for a new rig though :O

They will never get close to that, at least not for 10-15 years when hardware could even make fidelity like that possible. What is more important however is that Frontier gets the atmosphere of those pics correct, the same feeling from an immersion point of view. Meaning water we can splash around in, dirt and dust we can kick up, etc. Effects can go a long way into making a less than realistic environment feel immersive.

They sure are fracking fantastic renders though, I mean woah.
 
None of this will ever happen, because it would literally be too much work for the graphic team to do. The amount of work it took for them to come up with braintrees, and the incredibly detailed monolith ruins - not to mention the painstaking work involved in setting a random procedural generation algorithm to copy them to other planets - this took them over 2 years.

On a slightly more serious note, I suspect the Cobra engine just isn't able to do anything like this. I long to be proved wrong, and I would be immensely pleased if I am.
 
Hello I made the pics of the scarab, that were made in 3dmax...SepterLt made the ones in UE4 and shared the models on Ed Art Tools...and yes they are very quick art concepts. not in game....lol

The reddit links are the highest res..sorry if peeps wanted higher.

I am so glad I didn't kickstart this, was gonna, until I found out planetary landings was coming later tm and I decided to wait - I would be so <expletive deleted> off if I had been expecting those images and world (galaxy) building that Mr B. was promising, to have what we have today, a static (BSG might as well just be random flavour text across the various systems for all the life it imparts), story lite universe that players have no visible impact on, or at least barely - and yea, I know: 10 year roadmap, but what's the next station, overall goal, is the game still healthy, on course, anything?

Then offline play was nixed (with the refund controversy) just before release so I stopped even following info about it (you can tell a lot about companies when they only react to internet outcry), and only picked the game up on a Steam sale - have I enjoyed it? yea, definitely got my £26 worth of flying a spaceship and tootling around on planets, but...

Poor networking (seriously, F2P MMOs have better connectivity and cash shops), no roadmap of what's coming, no fixing of multiplayer exploits / griefing / combat logging, no dev interaction, Mr B act's more like a mouthpiece spouting off game lore (which is 99% only discoverable outside of the game), new additions are barely disguised old mechanics (passengers? please!), glacial progress and still (after two years), no orrery (maybe Chris Roberts will let them use his - it looks amazing).

Somebody called this game a sandbox, but this is no sandbox, in a sandbox children can build things, effect change in their play area, break things and easily play together - whereas Fdev keep all players at arms reach and say, 'you can do this and no more' (but you can buy these safe changes we have instigated - coloured ships & clothes).

So why the rant? because I can see how close to greatness this game got but... <shrug>, it's just an opinion.

and before you have gatehred that money that setup is probably the usual home PV for 1600$ xD then you can at leats buy multiple ones.


I think the only proper idea to make a Hugely diversy featurd game would be making them all own single "games" probably even with different engines. That way you could load up whatever back end engine runs what part of the game, while the front end is just providing you a GUI and handling the back end "games". And a serve rhandles all character achievements and stuff.
 
The Cobra engine has shown it's adaptability with Planet Coaster. From what I have read and seen I'm pretty certain at some point in the life of Elite Dangerous we'll see an engine upgrade - it's happened in quite a few games and kept them alive with new features and abilities. Although I don't see us getting anything like what these renders show I don't think Frontier will have to much trouble making atmo-planets look great with such an upgrade. :)
