About building large planetary ports on crater edges:

Since terrain manipulation is (sort of) a thing now, I thought I'd make a refinery in a very dumb location.

The result was on the level of dumb as you'd expect. :D

And probably the funniest of all: outdoors-hangars!

I'll need to find another pilot who's docking in one of these, as it would probably influence the hangar's environment. Seems like without a ship docking in it, the actual internal texture doesn't appear. Smart culling decision, Fdev!

Addendum 1: so I actually have NPC ships doing me a favor and docking, which indeed spawns in the internal environment of the hangar. I'll try and access it on foot when it re-appears.

Addendum 2: Nah, can't fall through the second layer of invisible ground. :(

Addendum 3: So I'm on the edge enough that I can literally stand on the ship inside the hangar while being outside. I wonder how this looks like from within.

Addendum 4: so a friend checked out the interiors, and me with it. Well.. :ROFLMAO:

There's an invisible wall separating us.

Ok uhm. So the guy stepped over the line of invisible surface separating me from the interior (the no-gun zone, but I've full access to my armaments outside), and he's stuck outside withme (unarmed, infinite stamina-mode)

I have to get INSIDE.

So Max is outside his 09 hanger, forgot how to jump and decided not to breathe anymore. Also left his guns in his ship. I'll invite him in a wing, and see if he can board my Cutter when he should be inside his hanger xD

AND IT WORKED!!!

He got his guns and lungs back, but is now forever separated from his ship :(

Unless I dismiss it from within the hangar LOL

NVM. quite the pickle.

I can't get into the station fully armed. This second surface layer below is impenetrable. Even squeezing under ship wings and everything. :(

I think I've found the extent of how far you can get into the port without docking there.

Perhaps if someone placed a port at an even steeper cliff, deeper crater, it might allow you to crawl to the elevator at least. I'll keep building along the edge.

In case anyone wants to check it, it's LHS 3702.

Something for the cleaners to fix? I guess FDEV cleaners will be very busy fixing stuff?
Imo if they make planetary surface "stretching" more "flexible" (i.e. giving these ports a larger flat surface around them), or introduce ineligibility for construction (bad surface optics for construction [IMO this would reduce a large chunk of creativity when placing settlements, please let it not resort to this!]), this would not happen in the future.

Initially it was a bummer to see floating buildings along the edge, i was expecting a larger flat surface to appear, making the settlement look like a bastion at a 89.999999° cliff at it's very edge. Makes for a fun snowboarding spot. But this has it's charms as well, i don't mind if it stays as is. :)

Edit: currently building a Zeus alongside a crater now, it might look even more crazy than the planetary ports did. I'll be sure to update this when the remaining 60% is completed.

Episode 2: I've finished my Zeus on the crater edge. Needless to say, it's wonky.

The surface manipulation under a Zeus is highly interesting. Instead of a plateu, it forms a huge basin instead!

I see a VERY HIGH likelyhood that i'll be able to enter this station's hangar from the outside with guns equipped!

Taking it one step further. I'm going in with a MANDALAY.

Screenshot_3.jpg

Screenshot_4.jpg

And I actually managed to "park" my Mandalay INSIDE Max's withdrawn hangar. xD

Screenshot_5.jpg

So, it is completely possible to enter the station without docking, I just need a way to go a couple hundred meters high in an SRV to be able to park it inside the hangar, and exit it!

Piece of cake!

Docked half a km below Max, and getting the SRV. See if I can clip into the hangar like I did with the Mandalay. Sort of high G planet, .45, might not be doable. We'll see.

Screenshot_7.jpg

The problem is that I can only manage about a couple dozen meters with a mere SRV, so I need to bring in even more help. 😅

Going to continue experimenting.
