Allow the VR '2D screen' to be disabled?

My only problem with FPS in VR is that you very often can't see a body when you look down. Very disconcerting not seeing your own feet.

As for head tracking, not all HMD's have only head or controller tracking.
The Decagear HMD that's coming out soon has a hip tracker which means your head can be facing one way, the controllers another while you run in another direction completely. In effect, running right, looking left and shooting behind you.
Head tracking is really only good for seated play in the cockpit for example.

That's literally the point of this thread, seated play with mouse + kb or gamepad or whatever. Not roomscale, not tracked controllers, not IK, not new headsets - just the absolute, minimal effort basics to mean we don't have to play with a floating screen in VR.
As I said before in another thread, FD isn't really well known for doing a complete job.

@McNum Even the UI is curved like in VR. I cannot get it too, why Oddessy doesn't get a "VR-Alpha-State" so to say.

I guess we could take it as a good sign, that they are designing the 2D game with VR 'in mind' as they suggest.

Looking at the roll-out schedule, we might not get to try VREDO until Phase 2 - unless the taxi service allows us to view the transit in VR (as per existing multicrew).

My one slight worry now is that VR was confirmed as coming “at launch” for vehicles - but, as far as I know, Alpha hasn’t been mentioned. Probably me thinking too much into it, I just really want to experience the new stuff in VR

Yeah would be good to know if EDVR support is even included in the alpha.

If it is, we should be able to test out the VR to projected-screen transition from the start though, given the taxi transport is working from stage 1 (where you just sit in the cockpit etc).

We have huge stations with detailed interiors... But, they are all just fluff since you can't even get out of your seat.

Hell, we don't even have animated avatars that actually talk to you in stations from monitor screens, just a still, low res image and a text message.

This is a very strange way to make your case friend. We just saw a trailer last night about how we are getting those things ;)

At this point in time FDev suggest they still want to add a proper VR port. Whether they get to it remains to be seen. But they're coming good on a few claims at least ;)

(And if EDO sells ok, the odds of them making a passion play in VR land ultimately improve in many ways ;))

Well I’m not pleased with foreshadowing this one:
Hi everyone,

Please note, the VR implementations are not currently optimised and not ready for testing at this time.

For as long as we're stuck with a 2D screen anyway, this doesn't burn so much...

(But dammit if I wasn't ready to poke around anyway ;))
This morning I had a quick mess around with Infinite Warfare via BigScreen using the “Void” environment - so just a mahoosive screen surrounded by blackness. The screen pretty much filled my field of view - looking straight ahead I could see black borders at the top and bottom, and just a tiny bit of the screen corners were out of view.

It was pretty good even without depth perception or head tracking, so I think I’ll give EDO a try this way next week.

Gonna have to give this a go too :)

At least for now we're not even missing out on proper ship VR ;)

Adding a +1 just in case it makes a differene.

We already managed to get FDev to at least give us a 2D screen in VR space for Odyssey - originally we were going to have to reboot every time we wanted to switch between Odyssey and VR mode. So that's already a huge step up.

Just as a heads-up to FDev regarding the OPs suggestion, there's another game I love to play in VR, ETS2 (European Truck Simulator 2). It does not have any official VR support, but there is a dev within the company who maintains a VR Alpha build (available via Steam beta). This is a very similar situation to what the OP is suggesting, basically the Company is not officially endorsing or supporting VR, but is making it available for those who want to try it on a no-support as-is basis. There are a few bits within the game which are plain broken in VR, but the majority works well. I would not be playing (or buying DLC for) that game at all if it were not for the "unofficial" VR support. So this sort of approach can work quite successfully.

Thanks for the support all :)

EDIT: Oh whoops, misunderstood you here

The plan was even more extreme initially. They clarified that:

Elite Dangerous: Odyssey will not be VR-compatible at launch

Meant no EDO VR content. IE no flying under blue skies:

Can we fly ships under blue skies in VR?

Yep, hopefully they’re prepared to take another step towards fan service, in a way which still sits within their current strategy.

The precedents of experimental branches and back doors to VR renders in other games do suggest there are a few options out there. (Even if I’m sure being a big online beast like ED brings its own costs and complications).

Fingers crossed that some form of compromise can be arrived at :)

Just a quick heads-up: I updated my GeForce drivers to the latest ones in prep for the Alpha and BigScreen started CTD’ing after a short while - I reinstalled BigScreen but the issue persisted. I’ve reverted back to my previous driver (460.89) and it’s now working fine again.

Hopefully I’ll get some fiddling-around time later today with Odyssey - fingers crossed for SBS or even more 😁🤞

I am hopeful that that issue is potentially a good thing.

It suggests to me that at least one person has worked in VR to have spotted to issue and known issues suggest (again to me) are things FDev want fixed. :)

Yep for sure :)

Just curious to see it sneak in to notes for a non VR build ;)

Hopefully means a VR compliant build isn’t miles off.

I got all excited seeing all the existing 3D options in the menu - but selecting SBS or HMD Headphones causes a CTD when trying to apply the setting 😕😅

Oh well! I haven’t tried the new (?) HMD Cinemascreen option, so that’s on the cards for tomorrow - as is seeing what performance is like with BigScreen, if the option doesn’t work.

My brief time in the game has made me really want to try it in proper VR - the planetside Pilot’s Lounge view looks epic!
